  1. Yeah, I am! First timer too. Friend had to bail
  2. I went for a walk and I managed to do about 25k steps yesterday. Took me about 3.5 hours :0 So I will probably be doing that on weekend mornings.
  3. Does anyone know how many steps do you do in Glasto approximately? Approximated mininum and maximum would be great to know from Glasto veterans. Current goal is 30k steps in a day
  4. I agree. Last year, the lineup was iconic in my opinion.
  5. I am so glad I found this thread. I thought I was alone with this! Any tips? 🙂
  6. This. Saying "why would I want a world where women are discriminated against" but then refusing to acknowledge that we live in that world already is wild.
  7. A layperson in this context is someone has no training in music and/or is not familiar with music theory. I was hoping to get an overall picture of what music you already know so I can suggest things that you don't know. Since I don't have that, I will try my best. Let's go: The bands you mentioned fall under rock or pop-rock so I will give one "modern" act that falls under the label of rock and then one "old" act that has nothing to do with rock music. ------------------------ Style Adjacent Act: Polyphia Short Listening: Ego Death, Playing God Longer Listening: Remember that You Will Die Notes: this act belongs to what we could call mgm or millennial guitar music. It describes a family of styles that take inspiration from djent, bepop, neo-soul and math rock among others to create what is often called "virtuoso playing" where there is strong emphasis on technique, complex riff and avoiding your everyday chords. Mgm focuses on technique and artistry over convention and tradition and most of the time the musical pieces have no lyrics. Also, often the artists don't fall in specific genres as their music doesn't fully fit established styles. Similar artists in this nebulous family are Mateus Asato, Animals As Leaders, Ichika Nito and Manuel Gardner. I am just a fan boy but I think they represent a new era in the way modern guitar music is made that breaks away from late 20th century electric guitar music. Non-Style Adjacent Act: Buena Vista Social Club Short Listening: Chan Chan, Candela Longer Listening: Buena Vista Social Club Notes: an album of traditional Cuban music. It became the poster child of a revival in traditional Cuban music after it faded away at the dawn of rock music. Nothing else to add. I thought I would give something more out there (assuming you are mostly familiar with late 20th century rock music).
  8. I don't get your question
  9. Tell me something about you. What's your background and what styles of music and artists are known to you? Are you a layperson or do you have a musical background?
  10. It is. Emily just talked about balancing the gender ratio in the lineup. That's all we know. We know nothing beyond that. We know nothing about why the specific artists were chosen. That's speculation. That's what I said earlier. Saying "a direct ploy to cover more females at whatever cost, more mutli cultural genres" is speculation. We know nothing about the specific strategy and rationale implemented to achieve a balanced gender ratio. And things like "some of which aren't at the level they are booked at all" are opinions which is nothing wrong. But pretending that they are facts is problematic because they are subjective opinions. Especially, there this objective idea of "quality" or that any of us know what Glasto uses to evaluate the suitability of different artists for different stages. We really don't know. Even if we think we do. It's just speculation and opinions and there is no point being upset when they don't match the reality. So there is no point saying whether x artist is Glasto headliner on merit because none of us know the criteria used to decide that. Sure you can try and guess but guesses are not facts.
  11. Ever stopped to think why they were not there? Listen to female artists when they talk about how they are treated. This is still happening in 2024. You can't just pretend that in the whole of the UK women just didn't want to make bands or didn't make them. Times haven't "changed". What has changed is our awareness of the historical mistreatment that UK female acts have endured and still endure. Listen to UK female acts talking about this. There is plenty of content on the internet about this. You talk about "merit" but what is merit worth on its own when you have the industry mistreating female artists just for being female? You simply can't expect equal outcomes when half of the artists are being targeted just for being women. Glasto are trying to do their bit in balancing this by giving more opportunities to voices that have been underrepresented. You seem to be under the impression that both male and female acts have always walked down the same path in the industry world, faced similar issues and had similar opportunities. That is not correct. Please, listen to female acts talking about this, we can all help if we listen. An open mind is all it takes
  12. It is derogatory, mate. You are calling out Glasto for trying to balance what has been a fairly homogeneous lineup since 1970. Female bands in particular have always been fairly underrepresented and let's not even talked about the music industry treatment of female artists. Yet you seem to be arguing that trying to change this is not good.
  13. I ran out of reactions to upvote you but I agree with you that it's not a good look
  14. Worth remembering that Glasto hasn't explained the rationale behind their lineup so you are just assuming that we know why they chose the lineup artists when we don't. Also worth remembering that people have different musical preferences and just because there is less of of what we like or know does not necessarily mean that it is bad. You could have plenty of people like Claudio Arrau in there. Would you imagine calling a lineup bad if you didn't notice that you had one of best pianists of our time there? Obviously, I am not saying that there is someone like Claudio in the lineup but that there might be great artists that you simply don't know about. Also the "no white male, white band, guitar based band" is unfair on Glasto. They do not exist to meet the preferences of any single individual and saying they are doing x to ensure that [insert my favourite genre] does not get the spotlight is just vilifying Glasto for not putting music that you personally like. I would love to see you argue ardently for historically underrepresented groups such as female guitar bands as much as you do for male ones. Especially, when you can see plenty of male guitar bands in the lineups even if it isn't in the particular stage that you prefer. At the end of the day, Glasto is not forced to keep its music preferences static and neither should it regardless of what random netizens like us might think about it.
