Wonder how many would book two weeks off in the lead up to the festival and isolate at home to ensure they will be virus free and can get in?

It's interesting to speculate how a contact and trace app and/or self-quarantine would work for international attendees. It feels to me like the automatic answer is "it wouldn't" and therefore this would be (sadly, ironically) a very fitting post-Brexit festival season where no non-UK visitors were allowed. Of course the issue is it also wouldn't work for the actual artists and their teams, many of whom are coming from other countries. So maybe not the same rules for them?

    Yikes.

Less so for Mumford & Sons (because they’ve already headlined) but I do think Aerosmith headlining might be something we’re looking at with the acts dropping out. When looking for headline-sized bands to step in for dropouts, having headline-sized bands already hiding in guest spots on the lineup is a nice luxury to have.

Reading this thread I've thought it very unlikely that Aerosmith would keep up as an afternoon guest under some of the headliners being mentioned. This year they'd have been playing under Taylor Swift and Paul McCartney, 1 act a literal living legend and the other who sells out stadiums. Kendrick as well is very special in the USA as being a sorta of musical leader of a cultural movement and moment (even before this current moment that was true).

Even as a surprise set, I don't see them having the same comfort doing this under a trio of headliners that's more, let's say, "standard." So yes I'd bet they either get bumped up to headliner or drop out.

I do think my favorite trio being invented here, Eilish/McCartney/Gaga, does keep the sort of level of 2020? But if Mumford or RHCP or the 1975 or Florence are up there I don't see Aerosmith staying a daytime surprise.

It doesn't give any sort of timeframe, but from my reading of it they'll be the rules until the virus is gone or there's a vaccine.

If that’s true and assuming there’s no vaccine and virus isn’t gone by Glastonbury 2021 do you think Glastonbury happens trying to follow these rules or it doesn’t happen for the 2nd year in a row?

No hate but Billie hasn't never done it for me. From my listening of her album its a bit samey and didnt grab me.  I found that hook in "bad Guy" a bit gimmicky. Not saying shes a bad artist, clearly talented for her age.

Im surprised how many people were raving about her, didnt really know she was as popular as people were saying but looking at Spotify monthly listens, she has 40 million which is 2 and bit more than the killers and 4 times more than the 1975.

I dont think her music really suits a headline slot. I think it needs someone with more energy and a bigger back catalog ( Know stomrzy only had one album). Saw her 19 set and it better than i thought but i think one album, not British and music style are why i dont think she would suit Headline at this stage.

Guaranteed to headline in the future.

I agree with all of this except I do love that album. She’s certainly big enough to headline. I think she’s BBC friendly. I agree that having 1 album is a detriment, and unlike Stormzy, the other 1 album headliner, she’s not British and not representing a moment in British music/culture. I think the disadvantages listed above are counter-weighed by the uniqueness of losing 2 headliners to the corona-cancel And I believe Emily really wanting at *least* one female fronted headliner if not 2 going forward and Eilish may be the best, if not only, of the festival headline worthy choices available for next summer. (To be clear she has never stated that directly, but she’s made very strong statements about gender balance and it’s hard for me to picture her booking an all male headliner trio with such a mindset as headliners are the sort of “face” of the festival.)

My personal hope is that if this is true that she bumps the 1975 to 2022 so that it’s not 1975/McCartney/Eilish. I like Glastonbury’s recent tradition of booking a “newer” act to headlining, a legendary act and a sorta mid-career act. 2 “newer” acts to headlining does feel a little disappointing, especially in light of 2020’s booked trio.

I think Eilish/McCartney/Gaga would be actually really exciting. And if you keep the surprise sets of Aerosmith and Mumford that feels like a massive year. But there’s really no proof of any of this, but that above would be as good as 2020, IMO.

I suspect that might be an American thing, at least with non-mask wearers being annoyed at mask wearers.

I’m in NYC so it’s not like there’s Trump supporters not wearing masks with rifles or something, it’s just lots of different people with different priorities trying to (mostly) follow these directives as best they can (and often failing because there’s so many of us), but there’s still a tension to that. For an example of the tension I am concerned about Glastonbury having If it goes forward with impossible-to-follow concepts like masks (constant eating and drinking) and social distancing (not feasible or natural considering the pop density of a festival) - for an example of that look no further than the 8 page long thread you started called “Don’t go to the pub,” with people photographing people and shaming them, moral judgements passed on those at the pub, struggles about whether it’s ethical or not and when and how it is if so... I’m maybe a little over-sensitive to tension but that’s the kind of agitating thing I’m talking about.

  6. 14 minutes ago, WestCountryGirl said:

I don't know about social distancing, but I am gathering from your post that you have never been to Glastonbury before? I'm sure you know this already but I can't even begin to explain the gulf of difference in 'vibe' between NYC and Glastonbury. For a large part, attendees respect the will of the festival. There will always be some dickheads who ignore the messaging, but if Glastonbury were to say "please/you must wear face masks", a significant majority would comply, and those who didn't would be shamed/tutted at in the very British way we do. There would be no 'tensions'.

I fear I'm not going to be able to explain this adequately, but if you are considering not attending Glastonbury on the basis of tensions between people being attentive to the dangers of coronavirus/those who are not, rather than just out of concern for the coronavirus, then you are (in my view) mistaken in just what the atmosphere of Glastonbury is like.

I hope this isn't coming off as belittling - not my intent. If you've got the chance to go to Glastonbury, I just don't want to think of anyone giving that up because they think it's the sort of place that could actually be spoiled by the dickheads. It doesn't work that way.

You are correct, I’ve never been to Glastonbury.

For me, the tension is from the sort of impossibility of all of it. To take your example, if Glastonbury said “please/you must wear face masks’... how does that work if people are drinking and eating all the time? That’s what I mean by impossible. Like the request just isn’t possible realistically, and personally I feel tense when witnessing that, to me it creates tension. And, honestly, the tension in my head is seeing lots of people drinking and eating without masks and not social distancing and Knowing there are other people thinking “those people are dickheads.” Like, that’s the exact tension for me in a nutshell.

And you are again correct I’ve no clue what the atmosphere of Glastonbury is like.

You are correct one more time that I’m not concerned about attending or not attending in terms of the coronavirus itself. If they allow it to happen that’s good enough for me and I’ll go and if not, not.

  7. As someone that will likely only do one Glastonbury in my lifetime because of the expense (and the difficulty of organizing a group to go with me out of country my age), my biggest concern in regards to this is a Glastonbury demanding facemasks and social distancing.

I live in NYC and it’s just unpleasant to be outside for me between the tension between mask wearers and non-mask wearers and the impossibility of social distancing in a city as population dense as NYC and the people who are trying (and failing) to social distance and are stressed about it and the people who don’t care or notice. To be clear I don’t really care one way or the other, I wear the mask and try to social distance because that’s what’s been asked of me, but it’s the tension that I notice and that in turn makes me tense. It just sucks right now.

I really don’t want to go to a Glastonbury that has the vibe like I am describing above. My current plan is to buy plane tickets again, reserve hotels again, and keep my tickets, and assume the festival will happen business as usual.

If they announce “Glastonbury with social distancing” or “Glastonbury with face masks” i certainly hope that’s before April because I’m very confused what I’ll do. I know how hard it is to get a ticket and I’m very happy me and my group have tickets but...

I had the email from Cathay Pacific cancelling my flights that I would have been taking to the farm in June. Glad that it's being cancelled so that I don't have to pay any fees. Wondering what to do now though - would it be better to take Cathay credit or take the money? I'm fortunate to be in a position where I likely won't need the money, so that isn't a factor. Do we think that flights are going to be more expensive when the airlines feel confident enough to start running again?

British Airways just sent me the email that my Glastonbury flight dates count for a voucher.

I just wanted to change my dates with no fees, but they were making me call for that so I just took the voucher. Like you I wanted to just roll over the flight dates to the new dates, but I also didn't want to be on hold with British Airways for an hour to do it so I will report back how the voucher works out (which they said takes up to 6 days). After I bought my (discount) ticket I paid for checked bags and seat selection and I'm concerned the voucher won't include those charges and I'll have to get on the phone regardless...

Given comments made above about ME possibly having future headliners booked, the only one I can think of is the obvious one, and if god willing they, and macca, all come through this unscathed then I'd take a stab at:

    Taylor Swift, Fleetwood Mac, Macca.

The only consistent theme I find in the last decade of headliners is not a fealty to a music type but a sorta booking ideology of:

Slot 1 - early career or a booking unusual for a Glastonbury headliner

    Slot 2 - mid-career act

Slot 3 - late career act

If there's a divergence in this pattern the last decade it's often in slots 2 & 3 not slot 1 (like I'd put Muse/Coldplay & Radiohead/Foo Fighters as both being kinda the same career-wise, but both years had what i'd call an early career act in addition). With this in mind if Kendrick drops out I'd expect another early career act to replace him, like the 1975 or Lizzo (barring the "is she ready?" arguments). Fleetwood Mac, if booked, would either be taking the McCartney slot or getting bumped to another year depending, as you never see 2  septuagenarian acts.

I know, I'm daring to say there is a pattern! 🙂

I suppose so. I've not yet heard any alternative, though. What good is a complete lock down if the vaccine is 18 months away? Or are you suggesting an 18 month lock down? That would be absolutely catastrophic for a huge part of the country.

This has become unfortunately politicized with "herd immunity" on the right and "lockdown" on the left but yeah, what many of the lockdown people aren't mentioning is lockdown only works to "flatten the curve" if you keep the lockdown going indefinitely until we have a vaccine which means 8-16 months.

What China did is containment, basically, which Europe and the USA have not attempted at all and I'm not sure how you get that back in the bottle in places like ours where you let it go wild already. Also, containment countries are still at risk as it hasn't worked it's way through yet. Containment until vaccine will only work with constant monitoring and/or already highly authoritarian setups. Japan however is starting to look like an interesting contradiction to what I just wrote...

The reasons these conversations feel circular is because there is literally no answer. An 8-16 month lockdown, especially where I am in the USA which barely has social protections for it's residents, may have a larger death count than letting the virus do its course while we try to protect the most vulnerable to it best we can. There no studies yet on what this lockdown does to more than half the people in my country who live check to check with no guaranteed housing, food, anything.

All the choices right now when presented honestly feel unimaginable.

They are currently just offering vouchers for future travel valid for one year from scheduled departure date. Useless for me. No refunds for cancellation as yet.

Good to know thank you. I certainly hope that changes.

Same just received and will also choose to roll over.

We are staying at Lovefields too, so have shelled out a fair bit for something that is now 15 months away but I'm happy everything has been fairly easily pushed back!

Agreed. We have a tipi and will roll that over whenever Glastonbury festival gives us the chance. I have a flight which is still charging change fees in my date range, but as soon as it's not I will try to change it to the same dates next year.

I'm trying to keep this trip as pre-paid as possible, as I've no clue my financial situation this time next year but I'm 100% going regardless so the more pre-paid now the better!

    Hi

Does anyone know what's happening with bookings?

I haven't tried to contact them yet as thought I'd check if anyone on here had first.

I wrote them with "we're all good to roll this over to next year if you are!" and no response so far. But I'm not too concerned as they're festival regulars.

  14. My airline (British Airways) is currently offering no change fees/cancels up until May 30th. Assuming that will be extended to include my flight dates soon enough and I'll change it to next year if I can.

Tried to change my hotels on either end but looks like I may need to wait a bit longer for June 2021 dates to become available.

Assuming/hoping we will hear we can roll over our tipi reservation with no issues...

Everyone in my group is on board to keep this together for 2021 so I guess this is the best result of a horrible situation.

  15. My heart felt like it sank this morning, like physically I felt it, when I saw that tweet about worker deposits getting refunded. My partner and I are the midst of trying to decide whether to flee New York City, which is about to go into lockdown and we fear will be quarantined soon after. In the midst of all this, here i am checking this forum and Twitter...

I know I’m certainly not the only heart-broken person here...

Wishing the best for you all. And I hope to see you all at the e-fests meet next year. 🙂

  16. This is an inflammatory thread and I wish it would be locked. You can easily ask this question on the doomsday preppers thread, I mean the coronavirus thread.

But I'll give my opinion anyways. I listen to governments. If the UK government allows the festival at the end of June, then they feel it's the right thing to do and I agree and I'll be there. Listening to people on twitter for your science and health advice helps no one.

I think I get your point.

If they'd booked more women and binned off hoary old w*nk like Noel Gallagher then it truly would have been the best ever (?)

I'm trying to keep my comment down the middle, especially since I like the lineup.

In terms of Mr. Gallagher, I'm empathetic that if your favorite band is Oasis this lineup may not be the best "Glastonbury 50th" lineup in your head, and I do think the priority of gender balance is a part of that. You make something a priority that obviously makes something else less of a priority. I don't want to insult anyone or any artist or anyone's taste in music I just think that's a very relevant part of this lineup poster.

  18. 2 hours ago, Jay Pee said:

Mulled it around for a couple of days, read it, read it and read it again.

Its not a great line up for me (at the moment).  That said, equally comfortable with Park, Williams Green, West Holt's and Kepler static in a yurt somewhere so as always, it will be ace.

Expected more for the 50th.  Which is probably trending on social media

This is my first time at Glastonbury and I'm just looking for 1-3 big acts to see each day and I'm more than happy with this lineup. Though I'll likely spend tons of time watching acts not even announced yet at Williams Green...

In terms of the 50th and disappointment... it looks to me like the lineup had 2 priorities, gender balance and a sense of history for the 50th. I think this poster knocks it out of the park for both goals, while maybe neglecting some other goals that could lead to some disappointment.

In terms of gender balance, for me Glastonbury did a much better job than Primavera did last year, where, again for me, it felt like in the quest for gender balance Primavera became a pop music festival for a year.

Anyways, I feel for people that were hoping for an amazing "BEST OF GLASTONBURY" kind of poster and I get it, and I do think the aim of gender balance messed with that a bit... But I think that goal of gender balance blends nicely with a goal of "looking to the future while remembering the past" that the festival does so well...

  19. Train tickets for the festival dates from London went on sale today at gwr.com (I'm buying from my Coach location in Bath).

I've been very bullish on being optimistic the festival is happening, keeping my group of fellow international travelers optimistic and pumped, mostly avoiding "that coronavirus thread" of doomsday preppers....

But the news of the gov announcement coming Monday has shaken me up for the first time. I'm not jumping to buy those non-refundable train tickets just yet. I'll wait for a statement from the festival after the government statement before committing... and hope for the best. Good luck to all of us that this all works out! 🙂

  20. A lot of the rock acts that are missing that I liked from @Brave Sir Robin’s playlist I am expecting on William’s Green. Looking at last year’s Clashfinder the Williams Green acts were great, and I don’t think many, if any, were on the First poster.

Acts I’m thinking missing that will be on Williams Green are Murder Capital, Warmduscher, Black Country New Road, & Dry Cleaning.

  21. I have a group all with very different music tastes so I think there will be a lot of compromises but in a world where i was by myself i would consider a must see...

    Skunk Anansie
    J&M Chain
    Charlie XCX
    Confidence Man
    Editors
    Lana Del Rey
    Pet Shop Boys
    Sinead O’Connor

PLUS first (and likely only) time at Glastonbury so as a sorta tourist I want to see one Pyramid headliner. Probably Paul or Taylor and it will be decided by my group as I don’t really care about either I just want to experience the giant singalong thing (which is why I’m not choosing Kendrick I think the other two will have the more energetic singalongs).

Would like to see - Suzanne Vega, Angel Olson, Anna Calvi, Baxter Dury, Big Moon, Big Thief, Caribou, Danny Brown, Fatboy Slim, FKA Twigs, Fontaines DC, The Specials, Thom Yorke

So yeah, I’m very happy with the lineup. Not caring about the Pyramid headliners doesn't bother me. There will be some tough group choices ahead haha.
