£35mil for Ox is a lot, but then in todays market who really knows. If we get him to his full potential then in a few years it'll be viewed as a good deal... rather than letting him get to free agent status and maybe losing out on him to someone else. I totally agree about his position in the pecking order, though.

From a fans perspective it's not my money so I don't really care how much we are paying out and it's nice we are spending big to get players for a change. For far too long we've missed out on players to bigger bidders or because we faffed around over £2mil. Fir the first time in ages we actually had strong squad depth, rather than our youth team on the bench.

Well... everywhere other than defence that is...

To be fair this would have been the case again if Ox hadn't turned Chelsea down, wouldn't it? :P

  2. I don't see who benefits from this Ox deal whatsoever. Liverpool have dropped £40m on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain(!) who has 10 months left on his current contract, and have handed him a 6 year deal. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has left Arsenal to play at CM, and in doing so has gone to a team with Coutinho, Can, Henderson, Lallana, Wijnaldum, Milner and (from next Summer) Keita already fighting for 3 places. And Arsenal who are already shite have lost a first team player (with their best player seemingly about to follow him out the door).

Ornstein (the most reliable journalist for Arsenal news) has said that Arsenal are unlikely to sign a replacement, too. Hopefully he means a direct replacement (as in a new RB) because if they don't spent the money on anyone there'll be riots.

Based on their last album are Paramore that much of a Download band anymore? I know their live performances can be havier but it seems their leaning away from that kind of stuff. TBH I could see them doing something more like ParkLife or Bestival...

Aye I agree with what Dental says. Download booked Biffy this year too who are as pop as Paramore (although I guess there are still some heavier moments on their most recent albums). Didn't Cooking say recently he'd still book Paramore? Really thought BST would be their most likely destination but I dunno if their O2 date makes it unlikely. @dentalplan will probs know.

Id keep koscielny, Holding and Mertersacker.

Have never liked Mustafi. And I'd completely sack off Xhaka while we are at it as well. At least half of the goals we have conceded this season can be attributed to him.

When you consider West Ham are, or have been, close to signing a player like Carvalho - a type of player Arsenal have been crying out for for seasons, our transfer dealings confuse the hell out of me.

I didn't see the full game yesterday, but I'm fairly confident I can say that having Ozil in the team for a game like that was a waste of time. When you defend like we do, in the games against top teams, having someone like ozil is a luxury we can't cope with.

The squad is a bit naff and a lot of changes need to be made but Mustafi and Xhaka aren't people who need getting rid of. Mertesacker is almost dead and Koscielny will be declining soon. Mustafi is Arsenal's best prospect at CB and should be entering his prime soon. He makes some mistakes but it was his first season in the Prem last season so I think he'll be more solid this term (if he stays). He may not have justified his price tag but he's definitely one of Arsenal's best CBs, and he's perfect for the RCB in a back 3. You can't replace 3 CBs in one window, which would have to be done if they only kept Kosc, Mert and Holding.

Xhaka is Arsenal's only CM who can actually claim to be top 4 quality. Coquelin and Elneny are shit, Wilshere and Cazorla are permacrocks, and Ramsey is a liability in a 2 man midfield (he's fine as the most advanced of a midfield 3).

Rob Holding about as useful as a chocolate kettle.

I don't think his hype is justified. A decent run of performances at the back end of last season and that's it. He was shambolic against Leicester and judging by the highlights he wasn't much better yesterday. Sure, he's got time on his side and may become great, but he can't be relied on for a team like Arsenal right now, which some people seem to believe he can.

Like I said, a CM is the biggest need right now, and probably a CB after that.

This team would have a decent shot at making top 4 which is all Arsenal can hope for at the moment:

    Cech

    Mustafi Koscielny Monreal

    Bellerin/Ox Xhaka New CM Kolasinac

    Özil Lacazette Sanchez

Somebody like Van Dijk replacing Monreal in the back 3 and freeing him up to cover LWB would be great but I don't think Wenger believes in defence.

    7?

Koscielny, Mustafi, Mertesacker, Holding, Chambers, Monreal, Kolasinac.

However, one of the last two has to be playing at LWB (Ox and Bellerin are shite there) and out of the others only Koscielny and Mustafi are good enough (I doubt Mertesacker can be relied upon to play regularly). Mustafi isn't great but he's as good as they've got after Koscielny, and it'd be ridiculous to let him leave unless it's to bring in a better CB such as VvD or Koulibaly. Realistically, though, he won't be replaced.

They still desperately need a CM because Ramsey doesn't seem like he'll ever learn than he isn't a striker.

Realistically, though, they'll sign nobody, and Wenger will say Wilshere and Cazorla will be like new signings and he'll apologise that Rob Holding didn't cost £60m.

I reckon Wenger's been given nothing to spend and he's covering for the board. Must be. They've got a net spend of around £30m so far and potentially have Ox and Mustafi leaving which would push them into a negative net spend, which for a club the size of Arsenal who have such glaring issues in their team, is ridiculous.

Paramore have included a night at The O2 in their UK tour early next year. Presumably makes them unlikely for BST and by extension more likely for Reading.

    QOTSA/Paramore co-headline confirmed.

But nah they could headline Download along with Metallica and A7x imo. I've got BMTH down atm but Paramore would be fine.

FTFY. Apart from Madonna they'd all be beyond lame. DM and Pearl Jam being big enough is debatable anyway.

Depeche Mode and Pearl Jam would be sick shutup

I reckon they're confident of getting Keita next summer. His club have said this summer that he's likely to go next year.

So put against that holding on to Phil for another year looks ideal, if they can do it.

Keita has a release clause of £48m next Summer. If he has another good season there'll be better teams than Liverpool interested at that price. Barca and City for starters will probably need a CM. I assume this is why they were so willing to bid huge amounts this Summer.

Costa keeps banging on about wanting to go back to Atletico this summer, but aren't they still banned from signing anyone? Has nobody pointed this out to him?

Nah they can sign players but can't register them until January. Similar to Barca the other year, they signed Arda Turan from Atletico in the Summer and he just didn't play until Jan.

You also can't loan players out without registering them so Costa wouldn't be able to play at all until January. Atletico did something weird earlier this window to get around this where they paid a player called Vitolo €35m to buy out his own release clause at Sevilla and join Las Palmas on a 6 month contract before joining Atletico on a free transfer in January.

So yeah, either he'd sit in the stands until January or they could do something similar to the above.

Loooool I completely forgot about this. What song was it about? All I remember is it was a song that sounded nothing at all like Electioneering.

    • Arsenals forward play was a wet dream for fans of tika taka and they showed some steel to come back. They will come up against tighter defences and if they concede three goals against the likes of United, it's unlikely they will win. Work to be done with the defence.

To be fair their back three was made up of a kid and two left backs. Monreal as the middle central defender is far from ideal. With Koscielny, Mustafi and Mertesacker to come back in they'll be much improved.
