  1. Thanks to the ensuing diplomatic crisis in the Gulf, I've been told I can leave work early so I will now be arriving Wednesday afternoon straight from Doha, subject to flights of course.

After 13 1/2 years of posting on the board, my first Glastonbury in 12 years, and probably my last one ever, I feel like I should come and say hello.

  2. Has anyone else noticed that ticket sales appear to have just stopped? There's been no announcement on that at all. A few weeks ago they couldn't stop telling us how close it was to selling out.

I'm actually going to head up the second to last day to check out Glass Animals and Mac De Marco. The idea of Two Door subbing is absurd, they didn't sub in 2013 when they were MUCH bigger. But which moron decides to put Glass Animals and Jagwar Ma on at the same time?

And Alt-J on at the same time as The Courteeners? Really?

It's basically the pub equivalent in Iran given that they obviously don't have alcohol at the minute.

    Also:

Fair play to ye's.  All this Saudi / GCC sabre rattling would be giving me the collywobbles if I was in Qatar.  Presume your flights home to the fest are gonna be a ball-ache.

I changed my flight today to fly on the 20th. It's cost me a lot of money as it's with Qatar Air but fuck it. Should get a refund on my Gulf Air flight

Yeah I'm out in Qatar too mate. Shisha is pretty popular all over the Middle East to be honest.

Oh cool. Do you head out for it? Grand Joud Cafe is my spot. Although obviously Shisha at the Souq for a spot of people watching.

Yeah it's a Lebanese thing apparently. I did hear it originated in Iran, but I know it's very much a Mediterranean thing.

  5. The news of Shisha at Glastonbury pleases me immensely.

Which of the bars would people recommend? I just plan on wandering around all night to be fair.

Genuine noob question, not taking the piss:

Why do people enjoy shisha? Is it literally just nice tasting smoke that doesn't kill you?

Actually it's more likely to kill you. Apparently.

I smoke it a lot because it's very popular here in Doha. To me it's the flavour, it's mild, plus it's the social aspect.

    Charli XCX replaced by Quimby

See here is the problem in a nutshell.

Charli XCX cancels, someone who has never played the festival before, replaced by a totally unrelated act, a lot smaller act and someone who it seems like has played the festival a hundred times before.

  8. Maybe they aren't having the colosseum this year?

And there's another point, this cost cutting is starting to get a bit out of hand. Obviously, we have lesser acts than previously, the site is demonstrably smaller- look at how the World Music stage has moved. There's certainly less shops than previously. And it could be the case that there's no colosseum now.

Although I do remember one year they sacked off the party arena.

We're gonna hit budapest on the Saturday, was always the plan to spend one night there. The Saturday being bare for us is a great time to explore, any decent bars or attractions you could recommend?

    Communist Pizza!

It's a Communist themed Pizza restaurant, called Marxim Pizza. Just make sure you don't get any seafood on your Pizza and you're good to go.

Uncle Liam, ask me about Belgrade if you need anything

After this, it's definitely a no go for me too. Was 90% now it's 100% :D

Yeah... what can I do in 18 hours? :)

I have to fly to Budapest on the 14th. To be honest I'd rather have a look around Belgrade for a day. But there were no direct flights on the 15th. So I'll have my first non Sziget night out in Budapest!

  11. Worst ever is clearly anything to do with the vermin at Transpennine Express.

The best: We were travelling from Zurich to Munich on an Interpol tour about ten years ago. The train was delayed because of strikes (I think) and bad weather. Still, we got a shitload of free beer and arrived in Munch absolutely loaded.

In terms of pure beauty, the train ride going through the Alps from Italy into Switzerland takes some beating.

  12. I saw a video of Barry Gibb on Jools Holland and all the cliches of the legends slot are there

    Overweight guitarist? Check
    Pick style bass player? Check
    Happy smiley backing singers? Check
Percussion section you can't hear? Check
    Disinterest keyboard player? Check
General feeling of everyone being really quite pleased with themselves? Check

  13. But we've had Mackelmore before and we've had Biffy Clyro before. This is one of the many points about the shocking nature of this lineup, it's the same old crap recycled.

Anyway, I'm sacking it off now to do Interpol at Summer Well and in Belgrade.

  14. Well, let's check the charts from ten years ago and see who will be announced.

So: Pigeon Detectives, Gym Class Heroes, Maroon 5 (headliners), Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Mark Ronson (DJ Set and last headliner), Taio Cruz, The Fray.

The sad thing is, that list isn't even unrealistic.

  15. So I ask the question, why did Nakamura not headline Wrestlemania?

Based on Smackdown, he's basically the most over person in the company. And all he did was walk to the ring.
