I think they're slightly hampered by the limitations of the genres they heavily push. I think we'll find the big reggae acts will be on rotation going forward.

yeah, i'm well aware of that. In fact, when I interviewed Lak about 4 years ago, he said they'd be dropping the reggae tip then cos they were running out of acts, so in many ways they've done well to keep it going - and I think Ziggy is one they've not had before (tho i've seen him numerous times). Perhaps they'll get Ky-mani next year? :P

I assume you'd like to see more reggae?

Yeah, tho Boomtown have been thru most of the acts already, so I'm not really surprised there's not much there which I've not already seen numerous times. What's been good about it previously is that it's had stuff which rarely plays here.

It's pretty obvious that reggae is a minor thing for a very large chunk of those who go. When the Wailers played a few years ago, it was very noticeable that the songs weren't familiar to plenty - and we're talking Bob's biggest hits, too.

To be honest, I'm not sure I 'get' it either. Not sure if I'm missing something, or it's just a case of having to attend to understand it? I do think that the lineup is okay though. Had reports from pals who say it's kinda part and parcel to dabble with harder drugs, so not really sure it's my thing.

Much like Glastonbury, if you've not been you don't get why it's different to other fests. It's more about the whole thing than it is the acts on the line-up.

I think that line-up isn't as good as previous ones have been, and it feels a little bit like they're running out of ideas other than to go bigger with the DJ stuff - tho there's plenty there still, particularly if the dancey stuff is your bag.

    Ah, thanks for clarifying Tuna.

@thewayiam I guess it's subjective, isn't it? My £200 pays for at least 25 acts that I definitely want to see (with more to be added), subject to clashes, plus there'll be more that I'll stumble across over the weekend. Then there's the unique setting, theme and creativity arguably only rivalled by the south-east corner at Glastonbury, which is one of my favourite areas of the festival. Personally I think £200 remains great value, given the prices of one-off arena and stadium gigs and I'm confident it'll be money well spent. I'm certain that 60,000 other people will agree with me in the coming weeks

horses for courses and all that, and there's plenty on that boomtown line-up ... yet it feels weaker than it's been previously, with the biggest new idea seemingly to book lots more DJs.

Maybe the next announcement or two will fatten it up.

Talking about the A303, will the traffic be any more mental around Stone Henge, given the fact that Wednesday 21 June is summer solstice? Best avoided?

yeah - probably a good idea to give it a wide berth. There can be stupid amounts of traffic for the solstice.

Sorry to be a pain, but with the news of the tour dates not necessarily backing up the claims Gaga will be there, can someone remind me why it was thought she would be there in the first place? Was it a reputable source?

Perhaps @eFestivals can remind me/us (sorry Neil, but easier to ask than to trawl through the entire thread, and I want to figure out whether to keep the faith she'll play!) Ta.

there was a piece in one of the tabloids where they interviewed her, that said something like "we asked her if she was playing glasto but all we got back was a smile" (as well as saying "but probably not headlining" or similar)

Having done a bit of asking around including of someone who knows the guy who did the interview, it seems very likely the interviewer was given the word off-the-record and used that wording to slip-in what he knew.

It's a bit of leap, but it'll probably hold up.

I know the lineup always contains a ridiculous amount of acts, but Boomtown doesn't pay out on stadium-sized bands so what do they spend the £200 ticket money on?

Is it the production work? Forgive my ignorance.

the ridiculous number of acts will eat into the pot in a big way I'd guess, even tho plenty of them are from the cheaper end of things, but the production will also be hugely expensive - it takes many weeks to build the site and take it down again.

Having said that, I suspect there's some money being made - tho having created something very different to other fests, I'd rather Boomtown were making a few quid than the many less inspired events that exist.

Many festivals, tho, only just about scrape by. Running a festival is not the licence to print money that many assume it is.

She's also playing a small festival down in Totnes run by Drift Record Shop in late August. If you're around the area I definitely recommend checking it out.

no, that's run by festival gurus Continental Drifts, and not a piddly record shop.

Never said I knew the full lineup, nor was I briefed by anyone prior to the announcement - like yourself.

    I know, I didn't say you did. :)

I chose my words carefully in what I posted back against your posts yesterday. You clearly knew some of the right acts, but it was also clear you didn't know what was going to be announced - else you wouldn't have got a headliner wrong in that first post.

Where abouts would he play you reckon? Is he headline size?

West Holts probably doesn't have the budget to have a more expensive act above someone like Damian, so my guess would be as headliner.

Is Damian Marley that big? That's not a diss by any stretch, I'm just ignorant to his relative size.

he's the biggest reggae act out there, by a long shot.

He's defo big enough to headline West Holts. I wouldn't be hugely surprised if he was 2nd from top, tho I doubt West Holts budgets would stretch to him and someone bigger above him.

    Lovely.

It'll be great if we get Damian & Toots this year.

Toots has done it more recently (2010) than Damian (2007).

Unfortunately I'm not expecting 2 reggae acts. There's been just one each year in recent years. :(

The only reason I can think of that he'd have gone for Toots and not Damian would be because this summer is perhaps the last time Toots will tour (I'm guessing).

Optimism & hope or based on anything?

he has Euro dates from beginning of June to beginning of July.

The man who books West Holts has said to me (within the last few years) "you'll get Damian one day" (cos it might have been suggested to him :P)

I think that Damian was nearly a done deal 2 or 3 years ago - he played Paris on Glasto weekend - because hindsight on some of the things said to me has that make sense. It was the same year that the 'one day' thing was said to me.

  14. well, I'm now just about convinced that West Holts will have Damian Marley this year.

I know Damian has been on the booker's hit list for a while, and his tourdates have it look like he's in Europe from early June until early July.

    Thanks Steve. :D

I'm new here and someone may have already asked this and I maybe the biggest optimist but do you reckon Emily Eavis was lying about Daft Punk and Stone Roses? Just to throw the scent off a little? I mean Daft Punk seems less likely but The Stone Roses looks more probable?

In my own experience, Emily doesn't do false denials.
