  1. don't post on here but want to weigh in on this one. glastonbury without boozing is a revelation. i did i think my 7th glasto this year but the first where i was only having the odd beer here and there (like one in the afternoon and that's it). it's way better. way way waaaaaaaaay better. its way easier to stay up all night for a start. you can tap in a bit better to the energy of the festival without having to deal with the peaks and troughs of booze. no hangovers so mornings are way nicer. you're in a way better state by the time you get to sunday. you're less exhausted. you can dance more. you don't have to piss all the time. its cheaper and you can pack a lot lighter. you're less likely to eat some shit food that's going to make you sluggish. you might even be more fun to be around. it's a gamechanger honestly.
  2. watching footage from 2004, maybe someone has said this before, but in amongst all the other fires you can see people spinning fire poi as well. hardly ever see poi anymore. i guess the fire has been cracked down on as well.
  3. i'm with you on that. when glasto book playboi carti rather than pulitzer prize winning rappers i'll change my tune but the demographic and who is playing go hand in hand i think
  4. Koffee and Burna Boy are both class, but defo not dancehall
  5. I don't expect this to be a long lasting megathread, but thought it was worth asking: any suggestions on where i'm likely to hear someone playing recent (ie not 80s) dancehall at the festival? i know we're in somerset and not jamaica but i love this stuff at the moment and would like to wind my waist
  6. is there any amapiano at all on the line-up? would love to catch some but i'm not up on the names involved enough to know if there's some bits and pieces dotted around here's what that kind of thing sounds like, if anyone is curious
  7. yeah exactly, that's the plan. will probably hang out with mates more than anything else. it's evolved since even my last post coz the new kendrick isn't to my taste, so i'm pretty much totally free schedule-wise.
  8. on the line-up, it's obviously very subjective and totally depends on the individual, but this is the first time i can remember where there's nothing at all i'm really interested in seeing. it's fucking weird! my list is like.....ok well i'd like to see k dot, although i haven't really liked what he's put out since 2015 and there's a load of other rappers i'd be more interested in seeing, and i guess megan thee stallion might be interesting and i like a couple of her tunes, ok maybe it would be cool to see nubya garcia but its not like i'd bother seeing her if she was playing in my city, maybe nia archieves would be fun....usually there's a couple of things on Glade that i'm dead up for and a couple of indie bands that i love and have wanted to see for ages, but none of that this year. it's alright though coz i know i can have a dance and there'll be a load of d&b and techno about. unusually uninteresting line-up for me though.
  9. i didn't know that about how stages are booked. It makes sense though that that's how it works. i would say that the JP and Park in particular strike me as stages where there is a bit of money to be spent which i find play it incredibly safe to my ears.
  10. The line-up is a lot less musically diverse than people say it is. By my count, and obviously its not perfect coz I don't know everyone that's playing, there's a lot of indie, pop, rock, techno, d&b and house. There's always bit of psytrance, some breaks, a bit of breakcore if i'm lucky, various other microgenres of generally UK-centric dance. Obviously this is not an exhaustive list. But overall some absolute behemoths of musical genres are badly represented - US hip hop, dancehall, metal, jazz, punk. There are bits and pieces of these around, but not a lot, and without going into detail the stuff they do book in these genres often fits into a particular mold. Some more niche genres are also overlooked - ambient, experimental, noise, everything covered in The Wire. Looking this year I see almost no drill, as in previous years there was never any road rap, and no amapiano either, though for all of that I might just not know the artists on the bill who play it. In general Glastonbury isn't that interested in pushing musical boundaries and tends to play it a bit safe. No-one ever agrees with me about this, but I still think I'm right. It's very rare that I'm wandering around glasto and hear something that feels new to me. I'd love it if it was different, but the reason they tend to be a bit conservative is probably that they know what their audience likes, which is fair enough. It works.
