Terry was ace with Fun Boy Three the first time I went in 83

Massively underrated, the FB3; great band. And of course ‘Terry Hall’s moccasins’ get a cool reference in this banger, one of my fave songs by my favourite band at the moment. It was produced by Carl Hunter whose new film Somtimes Always Never is brilliant and stars Matt Healy’s brother Louis and Sam (Ian Curtis) Riley.

    Bingo.

Add me and a bunch of my friends to this bucket. Corbyn over the past year has been one of my biggest  disappointments I can remember. Not quite as bad as the last years of Blair... but at least Blair had brought about a huge amount of change before that point.

Despite arguments around PFI funding (and I know of some very good PFI projects) more new school buildings went up in the 13 yrs 97 2010 than at any other 13 year period on the history of this nation. More hospitals and schools were built in that period than in the totality of Tory post-war government. There were many, many changes that a centre left voter would have hoped for. We didn’t renationalise anything though which probably explains why Corbyn voted against the Labour Government more times between 1997 and 2005 than the Tories did. He is a serial opposer. Not a leader.

nowadays it does, times have changed a lot. ;)

A few times I've had a load of efestivals lighters printed, and given them away at festivals including Glastonbury. I've not bothered doing them for years now because the last time I did it i got fed up with how much I got "what would I want a lighter for, i don't smoke" - and probably more at Glasto than other fests.

It’s the only time I actually do smoke these days. Part of my secret life!

Hi guys sorry if its already been mentioned, it probably has but there's so much to trawl through here, what do you think about Tears for Fears playing? They're in Germany on the 28th then nothing for the sat & sun. Hoping they play Werchter as well.

Certs IMO. My money is on after Kylie.

  5. Not an album,  but the Oranj Son 5 track EP was an absolute belter and sticking the other single releases from the year to the playlist makes it feel like an album! Strange set up - I’ve seen them a few times in Liverpool and Manchester and once in Bristol; seem to have a loyal following, but the real fanbase is over in Central and South America. ‘Radio Wires’ for example, was at #2 in the Peruvian charts over the Summer.

For me, ‘Break Yr Fall’ is the standout. Phil Taggart called it “absolute perfection”.

Soccer AM showed their rarely seen subtle side when they played ‘It Might Never Happen’ during their post World Cup semi final England failure montage.... suspect it might become a staple.

They've got 2 dates in Italy over the course of Glastonbury. How tiring is standing behind a laptop trying to look enigmatic?

I do it Monday to Friday. It’s starting to break me to be honest.

It doesn't seem to be a UK festival exclusive, so I reckon they are gonna be on the farm! Seems to fit in with the touring schedule so far. I can't work out what slot they'd likely get, Other or West Holts headliner?

I worry it may be a similar situation to Aphex Twin the other year, where he wanted Other but was offered a smaller stage so didn't end up playing (at least that is what I read in another thread on here if my memory serves me right)

I know it’s not an exclusive but it just seems like a unique ‘fit’ for them at that festival. Feels like an event. I’m there in a heartbeat obviously. Back to my Cheshire roots!

That well known left wing tyranny, the United Nations, has had its say on this topic. Apparently everyone except Trump and that new Brazilian guy voted for section 4, paragraph 2(ii) viz: ‘and it is the opinion of this place that Tories can fuck right off when it comes to Glastonbury.’......

Marsh lane with klf  sounds epic to me . Never saw klf.  Seen bunnymen a ton but not without mac

Audio footage of the Noel era Bunnymen doing ‘What Time is Love’ with KLF at Marsh Lane Community Centre. About 88 or 89 I reckon.

worse than that is the UB40 situation.

When Ian McCulloch left the Bunnymen (87/88?) they carried on with a guy called Noel Burke on singing duties. They were actually very good, released an album and did a bit of touring, starting at the bottom - I saw them at Bootle Community Centre, supported by KLF..... - and should have got a bit more credit. Problem was Mac constantly slating  them in the media. (“It’s like Freddie and the Dreamers, without Freddie.”). Had they changed their name they might have done something.

Like I said all along its subjective if you think it's being spent right and of course I know it's a balancing act but I just think that some things should always take priority. Also I don't think its entirely a case of underfunding more a mismanagement of funds by the schools, hospitals etc themselves

I partly agree in terms of hospital funding. Some of the management at mine is clearly poor - doesn’t feel like funding issues, just a lack of focus on quality. In general terms though, disagree hugely on schools. They are dealt a really bum hand in this country.

I ain't gonna argue against Germany's infrastructure, personally I think they have an excellent work ethic and that's why they do so well

They have also had a consensus of political opinion on the value of long term investment since the war. The ‘books v cycle paths’ debate wouldn’t happen there- it’s apples and oranges to them. It does happen here - as you have proved- mainly because that’s what our politicians have made us believe for so long. In fact, they have probably succeeded in making us think that those are ‘choices’. They aren’t obviously.

Germany has recently started using PFIs for funding roads (new & upgrades).

    </useless fact>

PFI isn’t a problem in itself. Far from it. We made the mistake here of lumping capital and revenue spending together into single contracts. And we didn’t transfer enough financial risk onto private sector partners.

You just know Germany will do it right.

That's why I said it's subjective,to me building some cycle lanes is less important then buying school books

Germany has never under-invested in roads, rail and, yes, cycle paths. As a country there is absolute consensus that not spending in those areas is a false economy. As a result they have embarrassingly better roads, bridges, railways, airports, cycle routes- you name it, it’s better - and they have a better performing (and resolute)!economy, partly as a result of that investment. It’s not an ‘either/or’ question most of the time; it’s ‘how do we maximise long term growth and what do we do with the fruits of that growth?’

If you just Google Somerset council cuts it will come up with a ton of stuff about services being cut. I appreciate that everyone has a different view on what qualifies as essential/non essential services,me personally find it insane when a council spends £15+ mil on road works(a town not far from me) yet can't afford to fund libraries or schools

You do know that local government has shouldered the bulk of the public sector cuts over the past eight years don’t you?  Serious question. As in about 30% less money to spend than they had  in 2010. To some extent it’s a miracle they aren’t all bankrupt. But yes, I did hear something about Somerset (Northampton as well I think)!which suggests they may have buckled.

And funding roadworks is usually a critical contribution to keeping your local economy afloat.

I get what you're saying. I'm saying that whilst they may well ring every penny out of each project efficiently,if the projects are pointless then it's not value for money. But like I also said it's subjective wether you think the money is going to the right areas. Personally I'd rather not see my local authority waste money on (what I perceive as)  vanity projects yet then have to close libraries or bus services to pay for it

That’s fair enough. What sort of vanity projects are you thinking of?  Where I am based (oop North!) they are few and far between I think. The big cities (Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds I have personal experience with) have delivered some spectacular successes, whilst some of the smaller councils  have been very imaginative. Check out the Mersey gateway bridge delivered by Halton Council: on budget, on time, costed and quite honestly as beautiful a piece of civil engineering as you will see anywhere in the world.  And the legal consultancy work they received for it wasn’t too shabby either...?

Yes they may want more for the money but if its spent stupidly in the first place what's the point? But then again to be fair its a subjective subject, what I think to be a waste might not be the same for you and vice versa

I have seen very little in terms of waste since I have worked alongside local government officers in the past few years. Quite the opposite I’d say. Seriously - they are very, very good. And I’m talking about Labour and Tory administrations to be fair. On budget and on time major capital schemes that deliver expected benefits. I’m not sure what more they can do. I have less experience with central government schemes so I can’t really comment on those.
