Fred Again.. and Paramore are both on AEG, not Live Nation. Not sure how much it means, but are we not thinking they're doing their own All Points East days instead if they're about in August? Feels like half the reason why The Strokes' have done All Points East (x2) and BST Hyde Park in recent years, not R&L. I'm ngl I think this line-up will be lapped up by the 16-19 year old demographic. Sam, Billie and Killers are a ginormous three headliners. Obviously I agree that it's uninspiring and there's no unique names it's a very narrow genre spread across the big names, not to mention the running order being disjointed. But honestly, with the 3 MSW headliners, they've stayed within the indie - pop constraints to almost double down on that demographic. It's safe, it's uninspiring, but weekend tickets will sell very well. I honestly think Sam, Billie and Killers are the biggest 3 names you can book in 2023 judging by who's around in August. From an FR persepctive, it does make sense to build the line-up around those 3 rather than throw in a bunch of rocky subs for the sake of it. I hate them, but objectively Imagine Dragons are a logical MSW partner for Billie, and their 2016 appearance did get a massive crowd - and they're around in August and have barely touched the UK since 2018 apart from one stadium show. It does actually make sense, as much as I don't want it to. Same with Capaldi - like Fender, he's toured sooooooo much in the UK but his rise has been that meteoric that he's just too easy a booking to ignore. Foals is a weird one. I love them so much and so do plenty on this forum, but if anything I feel they actually contribute to the line-up being uninspiring. Fender and Killers tick the indie box, a more rockier act or a rapper could have taken that slot but ngl I'm not gonna complain. In a way, they serve as the rockier act. But yeah - it's safe, uninspiring, the same is true for some of the subs, but it will sell well and it does look cohesive around those big 3 names of Fender, Killers and Billie.

Agree that he sits somewhere in the middle, he's still increasing in popularity though so it's inevitable he'll do MSE at some point. I don't think he'd accept MSW personally. Whether they do it this year or wait for 2024 is the question... However, even in 2023, I don't think Sam Fender MSE is considered a 'weak' booking.

He was booked for those slots in mid-late 2021, the amount he has grown since then is ENORMOUS. Genuinely, he's probably the biggest UK name in indie/rock rn behind AM and Liam Gallagher. Not saying he's necessarily better than the likes of Foals, Kasabian etc as that's up for debate - but he is absolutely bigger. He sold out his own show at Finsbury plus 2 Wembley shows this year. That's 70k London tickets and he's been touring like mad around it. 2 stadium shows in Newcastle is also ridiculous. The TRNSMT slot placing him on par with Pulp & The 1975 says it all, MSE or nothing for Sam, surely. Yes, R&L could wait till 2024 till he's absolutely certainly big enough for MSE but I think he's well clear of MSW by now, and with the lack of MSE-level acts in that demographic he'll be booked for 2023. 1975, LG, AM all done it recently and Foals, Kasabian, Courteeners, Catfish, Royal Blood etc. are all MSW level at the moment.

I'm kinda starting to believe the Sam Fender MSE rumour. The guy is absolutely enormous. I think he could draw a bigger crowd than the likes of Paramore & Blink with the current demographic, who many have said would do MSE or nothing if they do play. LG 2021, AM 2022, Sam Fender 2023 as the big indie rock headliner I think.

The Killers are HUGE at my uni, I know about 10-15 people who have fairly mainstream taste who went out of their way to get to that stadium tour. Probably 2nd to AM in terms of biggest indie/rock acts across 16-25 demographic.

I agree, there are these type of rock bands who have more indie fanbases but defo have a place at DL. Amazons, Pale Waves, Kid Kapichi, Cleopatrick, Tigercub and on a bigger level Royal Blood

Amended it a bit, (arguably) cheaper undercard maybe compensates for the price of Kendrick etc. However they did manage to afford AM, Dave and RATM in the same year - tho I appreciate Kendrick is probs a different level. Got to spend this festival in the press tent, absolutely surreal to interview bands like NBT and still get to go to lots of sets. Met the big man Melvin briefly, he just laughed it off when I asked who's headlining in 2022. Sam Fender was also just hanging about too which left me very starstruck haha. Biffy for me were set of the weekend, with Slowthai, Holly Humberstone, Sam Fender and Posty (who really surprised me given 2018 and 2019) not far off. However, the crowd for Biffy at the start was SHOCKING - front area barely half full. A combination of how late they were booked, their relevance to the 16-18 year old crowd and also the fact Gerry Cinnamon - and the whole of Scotland - was on at the same time. I think rockier acts, unless they're stadium level (e.g. foos, muse, rhcp etc) will now always take the smaller MSW slot while the more mainstream ones take the later MSE headliner. Can see Royal Blood, Foals, Sam Fender, QOTSA etc all suiting that perfectly. Sam is absolutely a future headliner, he is massive, would not be surprised at all if he's booked as early as 2022. He's only 1 album in and he's already surpassed Wombats, TDCC and probably even Catfish now. I thought Catfish were actually quite tight at Leeds but watching back their Reading performance I can see what some of yous mean.
