Have the EOTR vets got any tips or advice for the first-timers among us? 😄

Don't just ping pong between stages. Allow yourself to get lost in the site (ideally after a couple of drinks). There is a lot of effort put into making little corners part of the experience.

Go see someone talk at the literature tent. The speakers tend to be entertaining and erudite.

Now it is upon us I'm very jealous not to be going. Enjoy!

Thanks, will check them out.  Anybody else with suggestions from the undercard?

Aoife Nessa Francis, Dana Gavanski and William Doyle all fall into the folky/singer-songwriter umbrella. Maybe stretching it a bit but arguably Les Filles de Illighadad play a kind-of Saharan Americana

Oh of course, couldn't give a fiddlers fart if if someone feels the need. Folk were talking mandated mask wearing tho

Not to pick on you but christ this is depressing.

I'm outside the uk hanging on to a slim chance that I might get to this festival.

At the same time the offense that people in England take to the idea that we may need to wear a mask for something as simple as a few stages at a music festival is almost incomprehensible and seems to lack any perspective.

Part of the reason I love the other festival I go to annually - Le Guess Who in Utrecht - is because I have absolutely no clue who might be playing each year

While I agree, I heard several people last year state that LGW? was getting predictable /starting to overlap too much with Unsound/Rewire.

Also heard one group saying they could get a similar experience at Primavera (which I think is nonsense but anyway..) which overlaps quite a bit with EoTR so we come full circle.

Somebody with more knowledge than me could most likely explain the live music networks that have led to this but it does feel like we are now in an era of very many very good line ups but few unique ones, whatever your tastes. So probably we need to reset expectations a bit with these announcements.

  5. While trying to come to terms with not going this year, thought I'd give a recommendation to check out Lewsberg.

Very much dependant on if you are into that dry delivery Jonathan Richman, Herman Dune, bits of VU thing. If that sounds your bag, they could be your new favourites.

The person asking about Wire-last few times I've seen them they create such a great angry noise that the setlist is almost irrelevant. I'd argue they are one of the most underrated live bands around.

  6. Thought I'd put my view out there as someone who last went ten years ago (christ).

I had fears around the size, the talking (which I even found a problem back in 2008), the number of d*ckheads...

Overall though I loved the weekend, the atmosphere, the site is a thing of wonder with so much care and attention in every corner (I could easily spend another week wandering around slightly drunk, finding new areas).

The beer range was superb (loved the different selections/breweries at each bar). I understand the Beavertown complaints but for me they offered the friendliest and quickest service + were the only ones selling decent stuff on Sunday evening. Though it is hard to argue that 6.50 a pint is ever good value, if there is an argument it is for pints of Neck Oil and Lupulus.

The literature and comedy areas are so good I'd happily have them run longer through the day.

    The negative

     - The queues/queue management - one of the tipping points for me getting a ticket was the Saturday triple bill of Oh Sees, Hookworms, Snapped Ankles (with added Mark Watson at the end). If I say that I only got to see 1 out of 3 (+no Mark Watson) due to queues, it says a lot for how much I enjoyed the festival that I put that past me pretty quickly. By Sunday I realised that queues did not equal full venues just a shame the stewards didn't manage that.

     - Talking- less of a problem than I feared but still an issue. I had a feeling that Saturday was much busier and also much noisier. I'm no longer used to festivals in England but there appeared to be a lot of (Saturday) day trippers + some weekenders using the festival music as background to a day/weekend away (actually I heard a lot of conversations from people who appeared to have little interest in  music in general let alone specific bands).

     - Suprise Tipi sets - hard to complain about what is essentially a bonus here goes ...truth is, they don't really work (especially Sunday when there is nothing else going on). My experience fell into three categories (i) queue for a band I'd already seen doing stuff I'd already seen (ii) queue for something I'm not interested in along with others who then anyway talk loudly (iii) give up queueing and go to sleep missing something I'd have loved to see (ak/dk and snapped ankles - arse, feck, etc)

     - Sinks - oh for a couple of sink blocks! Do UK festivals not have sinks?! I can't believe the only option for a wash in the morning is to tip a bottle of water over your head.

Anyway fair play if you got through that big block o' text

  7. I asked a while ago about coming over from Belgium

Well we booked tickets a few days ago!

Thanks all for the bits of advice

We managed to get cheap flights to Southampton and will make our way from there - a bit of damage to our carbon footprint but we don't want to miss out!

Might stay around Salisbury for a couple of days after the festival if anyone has any hints and tips on nice places to stay/things to see?

To keep this slightly more on-topic - how nice to see Christopher Rees on the bill!

I had an EP of his several years ago and thought it was beautiful stuff then he seemed to disappear and i forgot all about him!

  8. Thinking of doing this by coming over from central Europe.

Does anyone happen to know if there are good connections (road/rail) from any of the main ports in the south of England?

Sorry, probably an obscure question but thought it was worth a try!

We'd also be arriving only late on the Friday evening - does this mean we'd miss tons of stuff or is the main action over the Saturday and Sunday?

    Thanks!
