Hi all, I'm planning on coming to Werchter this year for the first time. I'm trying to figure out the logisitics of travelling by a plane with a tent all the way from Poland and I was wondering if maybe there is an option of renting a tent somewhere near the festival site (or even in Brussels) instead of buying extra luggage and carrying it all with me? Has anyone heard about something like that? Any info would be much appreciated!

I'm not a Werchter camper so others can correct me but I doubt you will find something to rent, that doesn't seem so common in Belgium.

If you go via Brussels, you could stop at a store like Decathlon and pick up something 'disposable' for 30-60 euro.

Has anyone else on here booked to see Moin in London in a couple of weeks? I've wanted to see them for ages and thought EOTR would be the first time, but bagged some tickets for the early evening gig and am now very excited.

Hoping to see them at Rewire if I can manage the inevitable clashes. Excited to hear what they do with the album, I can imagine them stretching and pulling apart those tracks into something completely different.

The comments on feeling ripped off are frankly bizarre. Like if they announced some cash-in reunion like Primal Scream performing Screamadelica (god help us), that'd suddenly be okay because at least we could see where the money is going.

How can end of road charge 245 when this festival is nearly 100 cheaper .

Value for money against other festivals (or anything else priced at £200 plus travel).

If you look at the headliners they had previously it's poor in comparison to most years.

2015 - Sufjan Stevens, The War on Drugs, Tame Impala

2016 - Joanna Newsom, Bat for Lashes, Animal Collective, The Shins

2018 - Vampire Weekend, St Vincent, Feist

It's fine using the Glastonbury line about the experience, but in the middle of a cost of living crisis £200 is a lot of money for a week of camping.

I don't really see the point of the last paragraph. Again the implication seems to be that they are cynically overcharging which is clearly nonsense. Festivals cost what they cost, they are not charities.

Of the lineups you named, the later was criticized for being weak and trying to shoe-horn female headliners. The Joanna Newsom year is notorious for complaints that they over indulged her at the cost of the rest of the lineup.

None of which I necessarily agree with, more to say that what you present as some sort of objective evidence for this year being rubbish is as subjective as any other year

If anything I'd say the problem with EOTR is that it's trying to be too diverse...Great if you want to hear lot of different sounds.

I agree with this apart from the 'problem' part. It seems like a pretty great ethos for a festival especially when increasingly surrounded by festivals all treading the same water.

The comments on feeling ripped off are frankly bizarre. Like if they announced some cash-in reunion like Primal Scream performing Screamadelica (god help us), that'd suddenly be okay because at least we could see where the money is going.

  6. Even though I haven't been for years I love Supersonic and everything they represent.

Have to admit I was slightly underwhelmed by this. Especially as an anniversary edition I thought they'd look to some one off collaborations or special events. But also admit that I'm caught out by Lankum suddenly being *a thing* so perhaps I'm just old.

Greenman much stronger. More varied, better acts all round. I think it's in a different league to EOTR which seems to be intent on relegating itself with tepid bookings.

"More varied" is an odd choice of words. I like the lineup but it is as safe as you can get. As already discussed here, the eotr lineup is blurring boundaries in a way which aligns it not only with the usual folk/indie festivals but also closer to something like supersonic festival or rewire with experimental rap,  electronica, noise, composition...You may not like it but "tepid" it ain't.

  8. Main lineup dropped today. I started to copy but it is a big old list. Mightily impressive  Highlights for me from the latest batch include

Wacław Zimpel & Ben Kreukniet , Aura Satz Rhodri Davies & Julia Eckhardt perform  Occam Delta XX, Daniel Blumberg , Ellen Arkbro & Johan Graden (lovely album last year for fans of early Low),  Ghosted (Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling, Andreas Werliin), Nadah El Shazly & Elvin Brandhi, Dale Cornish.

  9. Moin, Mabi Fratti, Horse Lords, Divide& dissolve, Big Brave, Julia Reidy, Oren Ambarchi..

Agree with others that this has a bit of a 'alternative festival' (le guess who, supersonic, rewire..) vibe. Wonder if this is a  conscious decision or a case of 'what is available'.

Nina Nastasia in the early days would have been considered a decent sized booking. Times change I guess...

Anyone know whether the Emeralds on the line up is that of Mark McGuire? Quite high up so would make sense given their inactivity, but hadn’t heard rumours of a reunion…

I would assume so yes as there has been a well promoted reissuance of their back catalogue over the last 18 months and members are still active solo if not together.

Agreed though I was surprised to see them so high.

Then again it is 12 years since Kimya Dawson played Primavera in a free park show to 30 people and now Moldy Peaches are on the upper part of the poster 😲

  11. Yeah Le Guess Who? is a good reference point though Rewire is quite a bit scaled back (not a criticism, LGW? and the numerous side festivals make it a behemoth).

You can hit similar issues of crowding especially around Paard so if something is a must, get there early.

Den Haag is a pretty perfect location-lots of central accomodation, venues not far from each other.

    Oki / Huerco S

    Max Cooper / Jeff Parker

They Hate Change / Hinako Omori

    Rival Consoles / Jana Rush

    Horse Lords / Abdullah Ibrahim

    😞

It is all a bit of a mess for me 😬 Though that is often the case .

Moor Mother/Coby Set/Moundabout being a particularly annoying one.

If the timetable works, I've normally compromised on missing things by hanging around De Helling and LE:EN for an evening but the LE:EN acts don't jump out to me.

Oddly De Helling shuts up early every evening. Pure speculation but due to noise controls resulting from gentrification in the area?

When do they usually announce set times for this?

I was trying to work this out the other day.

Last year it was only a week before it started. Hard to know though if they held back because of the uncertainty on restrictions.

Previously they were still announcing side programs up to mid October.  So I'd guess at another week at the earliest.

  14. More Visions Festival follow-up.

Fat Dog were indeed a blast while being actually a bit naff and limited musically but naff in a very fun way. Can see why the kids would go crazy for them.

On the other hand-Automation. Son of one of the Gallaghers and serving up pretty much what you'd expect. Not sure why they are appearing on these kinds of festivals. I suppose if you stick 'motorik'in your press release then these days it does enough of a job. That said, queue around the block so maybe it is just me.

    O. do a lot with very little. It was too hot to see The Golden Dregs but based on the records I'd imagine Magnetic Fields fans would dig them.

Unrelated note-Jesus I forgot how annoying London crowds can be. Talking so loud even the band needs to ask them to keep it down a little (rant over). Only had that experience a couple of times at EoTR.

  15. Surprised at the comments about Saturday. That Garden Stage lineup is packed. I am assuming we all agree Magnetic Fields are the must see act of the festival. Then Alabaster dePlume's current live show is one of the most life affirming things on earth at the moment (only a minor exaggeration). With Morby and The Weather Station adding that classic EoTR Americana vibe that people keep saying they are missing.

  16. They put on buses as I was in one. Though noticeably it was not full. I have distant memories of the driver being bemused and possibly a little lost.

Interesting you both mention the weather. I remember it not being great but also not being a disaster.. Perhaps I had low expectations. Or drank a lot.

The Lake stage did feel lethal to get to. Looking back at the comedy tent-in retrospect, quite a lineup

Edit to say the 'visuals' and indeed mainly the smoke during that Moon Duo set were epic. They appeared designed for much bigger venues.

  17. A bit of nostalgia. 10 years (ugh) since the ill-fated one and only edition.

I wonder now EOTR seems secure and a guaranteed sell out if they'd ever consider having another go at a second festival.

Anyone have fond memories? Dancing to Moon Duo in a near empty tent springs to mind ( and probably in hindsight explains the decision not to do a second).

  18. Park Stage the place to be today. Any time Jarvis is at Glastonbury, it is a much watch . Also saw Courtney Barnett yesterday and it was a fantastic set...a bit of guitar noodling, a few singalongs. Think she'll go down well.

  19. Just suffered one of the worst live experiences I can remember. Considering there was no official VIP or gold area.... Arrived an hour before Nick Cave and we were crammed into a tiny entrance towards the main stage. And there we stood until two songs into the set when it was clear we weren't getting anywhere and we decided to head off  Apparently we weren't allowed in as unannounced VIPs had priority. Though there were not enough to actually fill the areas so it remained at times 50% empty. There was a point where the push could have become dangerous and the staff almost laughed it off and blamed the voices in their head. Utterly shameful.

  20. Don't really post in these parts but as I'm at Classic thought I'd give a heads up.

klubc flags themselves as full pretty early. There appears no one in one out system. The security go from nonexistent to over controlling. So you play a lottery with which entrance you end up at.

Once I got in (for the Specials) it was probably only 60% full.

Maybe won't be an issue next week but if something is a must I'd suggest getting there early.

  21. I went into the Eilish set with an open mind but it is odd to see something on this scale where there is very little "live" going on. I'm happy to blame the BBC but she is barely audible.

  22. As a bit of very old school perspective, I've followed these forums for years even though my last Primavera (Barca-have been to the Porto one since then) was 2011/2012. We stopped going as we felt it had become overcrowded, queues for bars were ridiculous (the last time we went was the infamous aborted e-cards system), moving between stages especially after midnight felt like a borderline crush.

All that to say, I suppose this is what happens when festivals expand. They'll make some adjustments and people will keep flooding in.
