  6. I think we’re on the same page here? I don’t think its possible or even right to try to force a value system onto another culture. Particularly because the values are actually the idealised values of the day, but are not universally practised. There are many communities within the UK in which women are still treated as second class citizens. We don’t invade these communities or ban them from public life. Furthermore, its only a generation or two ago that gays were prosecuted, criminals hung and women were seen more or less as chattel in the UK. And a similar relatively short span of time since parts of the US practised apartheid. Would the US/UK invade the US/UK to overthrow those brutal regimes of 1950s Britain/America? Economic growth, industrialisation, urbanisation, education all achieve enlightenment far faster than any army does. Also, long term stability is a prerequisite for these things. The Afghan war has probably just set afghanistan back a generation.
  7. Indeed but the outrage now is superficially about human rights when that concern is not expressed consistently. Especially when expressed by those who have consistently voted to diminish human rights in their own country… I for one am loving seeing all these ex forces sad bois crying as they realise that their neo colonialism doesn’t work and all their efforts were, in fact, utterly meaningless. I just hope they direct their bitterness at those who took them in there in the first place.
  8. The taliban afforded Bin Laden the pashtun custom of protection for guests. It would have been too great a taboo in their culture if they’d have given him up. In the end the yanks got Bin Laden with a special ops team but in Pakistan and after a decade of smashing the shit out of afghanistan. Why they couldn’t have done that first is a mystery. Ideally any country wouldn’t be ruled by religious hardliners who have human rights abuses baked into their ideology. But what I don’t like is the hypocrisy of the moral panic about the taliban retaking control. The taliban have held swathes of afghanistan the whole time, why was it acceptable to centrists before and not now? Why was a little bit of taliban control acceptable? Why is Saudi Arabia allowed to go on chopping off limbs of thieves, public executions, giving women no rights, forced marriages etc without the west invading? The inconsistency makes me suspect it isn’t really about human rights. And still there is no acceptance of the fact that this paternalism and interventionism of the right and centre is always doomed to fail. They have to recognise the hypocrisy of preaching liberalism but only when people do what they want them to do. You can’t force your belief system on people at gun point. End of.
  9. Sensing some raw centrist egos in this thread rn. The invasion of afghanistan was a disaster from start to finish. Own it Blairites!

  19. If you look at the detail on that yougov poll, you’ll see that a decent amount of the libdem vote has gone to Labour which is why its held up so well. Honestly with how dire Starmer has been he doesnt deserve it. But airhead lib dem voters are horny for the superficial shit like the knighthood and the former DPP in the same way that tory voters are horny for Rees Moggs accent and big words irrespective of the politics. In any case, I reckon he’ll make half a fist of courting the middle with a few more tory scandals/rows. Voters are fickle as football fans, it happens slowly, then all of a sudden.
