  1. The festival is definitely creeping up in price; the day tickets are still a total bargain but the price of camping makes a full weekend more expensive than the likes of Y-Not and Kendal Calling which each offer an additional day of entertainment

Like you said @luckysalt they are going to have to offer something above and beyond what those festivals provide; I can't see them managing to do that without beginning to step on the toes of R&L to be honest

Out of curiosity I dug out my order confirmation for Victorious last year; I paid £19.44 after fees for a day of music which included The Flaming Lips, Primal Scream and Peter Hook, I still can't believe it

  2. I'm very surprised that Madness are headlining the opening party with everyone predicting that the Friday was going to be pretty low key

Victorious is really on its way to becoming a bona fide major UK event, really happy to see it blossom

Who do we think will be the final headliner? Catfish?

  3. There's apparently rumours of Madness plus I've heard from a promoter friend that The Libertines are looking to headline a lot of mid-range festivals next year so I could definitely see them in the frame

A combination of Madness and The Libertines fifteen miles away from Newport for less than the cost of a day ticket to Isle of Wight would surely kill the event off. I do wonder how many punters went to Victorious over Isle of Wight this year, I can only imagine that the number is going to grow

To be honest I think if IOW repositioned themselves as a mid-range festival, shaved £30 off the weekend ticket price, booked something along the lines of Rudimental/Catfish, Arcade Fire and Kaiser Chiefs I reckon they would do decent business this year and begin to carve out a reputation as being the go-to affordable family festival which I think is a market IOW could do well to corner

  4. Has anyone mentioned that Victorious is adding camping this year so IOW is in direct competition?

I hazard a guess that once the festival calendar starts fleshing out Isle of Wight is going to look even worse and probably less appealing than events like Y-Not and Kendal Calling

  5. How do we think this is going to play out? Isle of Wight would have been smart to copy what Bestival are doing and downsize along with slashing the ticket price, the atmosphere of the event is a strong asset and seems to be what's drawing the regulars (what's left of them) back

Instead the festival is probably going to go down in a ball of flames. I can't see it being handled well either; with Solo lacking the assets of other major promoters I'm fully expecting it to be artists/vendors not being paid, difficulty getting refunds, John Giddings grasping a crate of Starsailor CDs missing the last helicopter out of Saigon level

  6. Those headliners would work at Bestival because you know that there'd be an undercard to back up and compliment the bookings, that's IOW's problem

Arcade Fire are a great headliner but their fans are not going to make a ferry trip and pay £200 to spend the day watching acts like Busted and The Corrs

  7. I imagine that if the festival had someone with clout to announce they would have before getting to Rod

Part of me thinks that James would actually sell more tickets to the usual Isle of Wight crowd than Foals, not sure if the festival is even on the radar for young people anymore

  8. It depends if Biffy approach the performance like a bog standard festival set a la Isle of Wight or they use it as an opportunity for fan service

They are probably aware that they have something to prove, it's just a matter of deciding how they prove it

  9. Actually I just dreamt up a setlist and it works really well, ignore everything I've said previously

    Wolves of Winter
    That Golden Rule
    Who's Got a Match?
    Biblical
    57
    Saturday Superhouse
    Bubbles
    Folding Stars
In the Name of the Wee Man
    Semi-Mental
    Mountains
    On a Bang
    9/15ths
Living Is a Problem Because Everything Dies
    Machines
    Animal Style
    Many of Horror
There's No Such Thing as a Jaggy Snake
    Stress on the Sky
    The Captain

    Glitter and Trauma
    Eradicate the Doubt
    Stingin' Belle

  10. I see why people believe Biffy Clyro can emulate how Muse approached their headline set a couple years ago, however Muse had the advantage of having a heavy album to promote and the ability to lean on their two heaviest albums that coincided with their commercial breakthrough

I imagine that an Origin of Symmetry-dense set is far more festival friendly than an Infinity Land/Vertigo of Bliss one

  11. Some of the Ellipsis songs didn't go down particularly well either, the crowd response to Wolves of Winter was very, very subdued for an opener

Interestingly it was the poppier tracks that went down better, but I doubt many of those going wild for Howl will be attending Download
