  1. OK long answer

Been going to glasto since early 90's and my daughter has been to every one of her lifetime ( she's 14 in 2 months time, first one 8 months old) can't recommend it enough, Kids field is excellent and not just for small kids. zip wires, learning circus skills etc face painting, a big top with kids entertainment most of the day, making stuff everything is free.

Also there is the Greenpeace field with usually a giant pirate ship to climb on and a small library/book shop right at the back of that field. depends on how bookish your son is.

Assuming you are pretty liberal, a kid could have a fantastic festival in the circus/cabaret field. The seriously dangerous circus acts are really amazing we are talking juggling with lit fire torches and chainsaws ( yes really - no trickery lose your arm stuff !!) later on it can be risque but kind of educational. the outdoor comedy and the street theatre in those fields is really great.

Before we got the van we camped in family camping in Cockmill meadow which does get full quick but if he is robust camp anywhere other than the big ground etc where they stay up and shout "bollocks" all night ( maybe they dont do that now it's about 15 years since we camped there !)

Mix it up, kids stuff in the day adult stuff in evening ( extreme circus stuff tends to be in evening and it's under cover in the big circus top so good but busy if it rains, very chilled, quite a lot of kids all encouraged to sit up front so they see it all )

If he can stay awake then do arcadia too. there used to be a traditional thursday night outdoor film but that moves about in location and timing now but always includes some kinds stuff. ( it's now in a  marquee so can get busy ( get there early with camping chairs and nurse your hangover ! same goes for kinds field)

Short answer, yes take him even if your school cuts up rough and charges you under the new no authorised absence rules.

  2. it really is luck and being organized and prepared. Having been to every glasto since 1993 I frequently get asked if I get a 'loyalty ticket' i usually say 'I wish' but really I don't think there should be a loyalty advantage for the good reasons people on here have already pointed out.

I was lucky again this time my main fear was that they would sell out even faster than last year. It's a relief that they seem to be slowing it down to 30 minutes, i feel that the longer it takes to sell out then more casual buyers will give up and the committed ones have a better chance.

Also the slower it goes the lower the chance of getting on the booking page but  tickets sell out before you complete the transaction. That will always happen to some people in the last few minutes of availability and is gutting after thinking you have them in the bag.

  3. I agree with the above in 20+ years we only failed once in the main sale (2014) and it seemed such a long time until April, but we were successful 6mins into the resale. Chin up ! Good luck to all those trying in the resale !

  4. I'm going to use Siri and shout my details at my phone when I get through, what could possibly go wrong?

Does anyone still try the phone number for tickets as well? Or have they retired that option?

I'm still howling at this  :sarcastic:  :sarcastic: :sarcastic:

  5. well done you lot !

I really need a kick up the backside as I haven't made any progress at all. I really need to focus if I am going to be fit for the festival season. it's only 2 months to BT and 3 months to Glasto.

going away to give myself a talking to !

  6. evening all !

Some great inspiration coming off this thread though I have to admit I am not sticking to my healthy eating plan as well as I had hoped ( just finished off all the celebrations chocs that my daughter didn't like from her xmas pressies !!! )

Floorfiller I tried that starvation diet about 18 months ago and after a few weeks not seeing much benefit I did a bit more research and apparently it is a much more successful weight loss plan for men than women. Hope you keep seeing good results from it though.

TDW I have a dodgy knee which doesn't compare to your heart problems but a recent report suggested that just standing rather than sitting is actually very good exercise so something we can all do a bit more of, Thurlow84 this could be something you can do too, I am trying to stand up to do things more if I have the choice.

    Stay motivated all

  7. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but vans do have to be fitted out with a bed and/or have cooking or washing facilities to be allowed into the camper van field.they don't check every van on entrance but do check quite a few.

if it's not a camper van / caravan then unfortunately you would have to park in one of the normal car parks where they don't allow you to sleep in your vehicle.

if you look on TOS at info and campervan tickets terms and conditions the exact criteria are listed.

  8. Count me in too. I could do with losing about 3 stone but won't get anything like that off. I would be pleased to get one off and get fitter.

I haven't got a definite plan of action yet, so going to keep looking on this thread and take some inspiration from all you lot !

Well done Amazing Oblong it is the wine that is the root of my weight problems, just cutting back/out the mid week booze would be a good start for me.

  9. I really like not having to sleep on a thermarest these days, but i do accept that we have sold out slightly. I do miss waking up actually on site !!!

Yes I think we should start a campaign to bring back the outdoor cinema, but it would have to be Wednesday evening now, and for those of us in the campervan sell out field :girlwink: we would have been there for a day and a half already !!!

I do admire your dedication coming from Ireland, when did you first visit Glasto ?

  10. I saw Amy Winehouse twice in one day at Glasto. Not sure what year ( it was before the year she got into an altercation with the crowd) but she played the Pyramid and then the Jazz stage about 3 hours later.

She was drinking what looked like pints of red wine at the earlier performance, but she was truly amazing. I expected her to be wasted for the jazz stage but she turned up in a different and fantastic outfit and sang her heart out again.

She was an exceptionally talented artist, but such a tortured soul. On that day she showed attitude and charisma.

Not sure why your memories of the Killers has brought this back I guess it was the same era, and I also now remember the Killers giving a great performance.

  11. I know, we used to get the coach down from Bradford early Thursday morning, and there's were usually plenty places to pitch, but there was a very, very long walk from the coach station to the perimeter fence. Actually the coach was the start of our festival because the vibe was really good all the way down. ( and the cameraderie ( sp ?) was good on the way back especially if we were all mud covered)

we used to travel light in those days, so it was tiring but not impossible. that Thursday evening feeling when you got your tent pitched and explored the site was just magical.

These day we have a campervan and are there Tuesday lunchtime, I take a week off work now !

  12. that open air cinema thing was really lovely wasn't it.

They moved it into a bubble kind of marquee thing because of the poor weather but that just filled up with mud. I remember taking my daughter to a film in there when she was a toddler but it was not the same as the outdoor version.

I used to absolutely love the atmosphere on the Thursday night. You had got your tent up and glasto was officially started.

    Wonderful

  13. sidestepping the paedo thing.....

just want the thank The Nal for the coffee and cigs clip. Iggy and Tom Waits are particular favourites of mine and I have never seen this before. I stupidly did not go to see Iggy and the Stooges when they played Glasto recently. I can't imagine what i thought was more important, or maybe I had had too much vino, but it was a big regret afterwards,

I did see him way back in the 90's when his star was very much NOT in the ascendancy, but he was still a legend. ( and a very scantily clad one as I remember ! )

Tom Waits is one of the few living artists I have a desire to see before I shuffle off this mortal coil, but the chances are slim he hardly ever plays ( unless it's some fund raising thing for his local school ). I missed out seeing him in Glasgow about 25 years ago.

Still, it's not good to have no goals left !!

  14. .".I find as I get older that sets and years are merging into one,"

I absolutely agree with you Nickyboy and i am impressed you remembered which years these memories were from.

For me there really are too many to list, and I can't remember the years anyway.

the whole of the White Stripes set was magnificent ( about 10 yrs ago ?)

Disco 2000 and Common People - Pulp (2011, I am taking your word for it Nickyboy I missed the 95 performance we were stuck in one of the worst crowd jams of glasto history think it was portishead and there was some last minute change due to someone like the Lemonheads not showing up on time ?)

Just about every Beautiful South set at glasto has been great but the last one before they split was lovely the crowd sang along to pretty much the whole set.

On a slight tangent I will always remember when they used to show a film on the open air cinema on a thursday evening. One year they showed Ghost Busters and the whole crowd sang along to the theme tune. It was a lovely dry evening and in those days the start of the weekend's entertainment was on the Thursday evening.

  15. I was there the year before they built the new fence, and it did feel like double the numbers which at that time were about 100,000. it was absolutely rammed. Afterwards I remember a lot of talk of 100,000 tickets sold and another 100,000 got in over the fence. I know that doesn't take into account all the crew, but it's all anecdotal anyway.

  16. It's Warley, close to Brentwood and on that junction there's a gate with free entry to a little known Essex wildlife trust run property. It's a mix of history, wildlife, especially birds and a fantastic old garden that fell to ruin, the trust just about manage to keep the wild stuff in check. Ellen Wilmott & famous horticlutarist in her time but now pretty well unknown was left a fantastic sum of money by her father & went on to financial ruin, spending it all on the gardens

There is an ornamental thistle ( eryngium I think) which is often nicknamed 'miss wilmott's ghost' apparently she was in the habit of casting it's seeds in other people's gardens without their prior knowledge or permission, where It would then establish itself to the puzzlement of the gardener.
