RE: The whole 'it felt flat' thing

I kind of agree.  I think what it boiled down to for me was the sheer quantity of Post Punk edging its way into the line up at the Big Top

The only Post Punk was Wire, the ghost of Baxter Dury's Dad and I suppose very very early Pulp if we're stretching.

If you mean the new guitar bands they were the highlights. It's hardly their fault that Americana, and Pitchfork-friendly Indie needs a refresh and new blood at the moment. I remember my first EOTR saying that I'd enjoyed the singer-songwriters but I wish there'd been someone to shout Kick Out the Jams now and again (plus a bit of diversity of where bands came from) but there weren't any obvious guitar bands to go to. And I think that's the case with the Americana stuff the keys bands are aging, touring less, and we've seen them - it's a poor year for them but they'll bounce back soon enough.

  2. Had the flu for most of the festival, so I was muzzy headed and tired for the first few days. Whenever I was feeling especially rough, however, thinking that I should probably just lie down in my tent until it was time to go home, a band - Spiritualized, the Beths, Martha would save me.

Feeling especially rough Friday night so sat in the Heeling Garden drinking an infusion watching the lights and listening to Parquet Courts smash it (no Honey-Has stress here).

By Sunday I'd conquered it and had that post-flu rush of invincibility so rather uniquely finished the festival with more vigour and energy than I began.

    Good

We went into this festival season being told that there was a New Normal and that didn't include spiky guitar bands. On the coach on the way out of festival I posted about 20 (what we would once have called indie or alternative) bands, none of which have released more than two lps,  that I'd seen at EOTR, Green Man or elsewhere over the summer that play dynamic live shows and write  songs drawn from their generation's experience.

Literature tent - Max Porter's conversation and the backlisted podcast in particular. Robin Ince was an obnoxious bore however.

Low and Jarvis in the Garden.

    Bad

    Sourdough

People sitting in camping chairs - Garden Stage, just inside the Big Top whilst your eyes adjust to the darkness, outside my tent in Tangerine Fields from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm. Also although I don't mind the people who sit on the hill by the Woods stage the acts booked to keep them happy means that stage doesn't deliver its potential.

    No Goan Kedgeree for breakfast.

  3. I like their records and I probably will end up seeing them, up they were a bit snarky and disinterested when I saw them before. Perhaps a better time slot and the magic of the Garden Stage will see them rise to the occasion.

Maybe I’m misremembering that Sunday... It felt much much wetter to me. Maybe the hangover was particularly vicious that day! Still, none of it was enough to take the shine off Perfume Genius and Bill Callahan — couldn’t ask for a more perfect line up than those two!

Green Man Friday was much wetter than that Sunday. But it felt worse  at End of the Road - more of a breeze, less seating areas, coped less well.

Looking forward to my first End of the Road ever. Just been to Green Man and there was plenty of good stuff going on, on the Friday and Saturday until the late hours, i.e. 2:00 to 4:00 am. What happens at End of the Road?

There's more going on at End of the Road than Green Man, which seemed to wind down around 1:30 with only djs playing and a few comedians talking.

End of the Road has secret sets in the Tipi, weirdos dancing to disco music on headphones and electric acts in the Big Top and the woods are cool to walk through late at night.

  6. To be honest I was a bit disappointed that the performances finished early on Saturday and Sunday with djs taking over around. I like electronic and dance music to listen to at home or when travelling but on a  stage at festival or venue it is an utter bore.

EOTR handles this better, with the disc jokeys playing records for the lazy bastards who just want a dance and a drink and bands in the Tipi for those that still want something good.

Anybody read this on the Guardian?

    https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/aug/20/all-female-music-festival-lineups-native-loud-women-fest-boudica-hearher

Seems unfair to mention EOTR in my opinion...I know Courtney Barnett is only headlining because an all-male band pulled out, but Metronomy has a prominent female member and I think the festival has been pretty good over the years of featuring women in headlining slots (on both 'main' stages).

Plus Green Man - had Yo Le Tengo and Stereolab which feature female members and Sharon Van Ettan was second on the remaining night.

I arrived late for that one due to having to dig around in the debris at the front of the Garden Stage to find my shirt after the Oh Sees set. The Snapped Ankles sets at Strummerville and WG were pretty full on too.

Just added another one to my wish-list for late sets; Pottery. Only saw about 4 songs in the Green Man record sales tent but they were ace. Seeing them again at the Joiners tonight.

Yep saw the last few songs in the Walled Garden and thought it was White Fence because of the assurance they played with I assumed it was a more experienced band.

My only gripe is that the dance options are fairly limited and are on sooo late!  I couldn't manage to stay up til 2am to catch Giles Peterson, Shy FX or John Talabot do the after hours stuff.  I don't know why there's such a big gap between the last headliner finishing and the dancey stuff starting.

There wasn't. The longest was between idles and John Talabot - 45 mins whilst they burnt the Green Man.

sorry if this has been asked but how long does it take to get from far out to main stage, I wanna catch all of growlers but be at Father John Misty by second song of his set

What's wrong with the first song?

  11. @JHad  I ave found your info interesting.

When I go on BBC Weather page it largely says Light Rain but the chance of rain at any given hour is only around 20%. Does that mean it is expected to rain for 20% of that hour OR that during that hour there's 20% chance that there will be rain. OR that at any given moment during that hour there's a 20% chance of rain and therefore it will rain at some point in that hour.

  12. I think the problem for promoters this year has been a limited supply of headliners. The teens era headliners - FJM, John Grant, Animal Collective, Vampire Weekend  etc have probably peeked or have played these sort of festivals recently or aren't touring. There's been no triumphant return of a 90's band like Slowdive, Ride, Grnadaddy, NMH. And no-one is clamouring for a 00's landfill indie revival.

It's weird really, because lower down the bills and in the tents. There's lots of really exciting bands - Pip Blom, Penelope Isles, Black Midi, Fountains DC etc. But they're all on their debut albums and haven't the following. Idles will probably headline somewhere next year, and others will follow but until then ...

You could also make a similar argument about 2012. Both Grizzly Bear and Granddaddy have since played sub-slots at Green Man, while Beach House are a similarly Troxy-level band.

The thing about Grandaddy was that in 2012, it was their first gig in the UK for years.

  14. I saw Kate Tempest headline Deer Shed in a deluge a few years back. A very strong set.

Bumping Courtney up and adding her second on the bill does seem stronger. In fact, EOTR have repeated their habit of having the strongest Woods and Garden headliners on the same day (top 3 on both stages on Saturday) then having two dullards headlining another night.

It's worth remembering though even if the headliners don't float your boat it can be pretty special in the evening floating between the stages, catching a bit of all bands, meandering through the woods looking at the art work, seeing if anything's happening on the piano stage. You'll all be fine.

haha  a guy from Squid snapped at my mate last year because he overheard him making fun of the band Duds

Squid were great when I saw them last month.

(But then I liked Duds at EOTR).

Ask Big Jeff. He seems to get told all the tipi secret sets well in advance. Spoke to him on the Thursday last year and he let me know all of them with 100% accuracy.

    That works for me.
