  1. 1999 will always be my favourite... glorious sunshine, abundant grass (of both varieties), REM rocked the place, Hole got a stage invasion, great sets by Joe Strummer and Skunk Anansie... plus the edgy atmosphere, "bollocks" shouting and naked people were a common sight. Damn I hope this year is as good! Mind you, last year for me was the first time it felt like Glasto since that fence went up (the old one might as well not have been there...), and with that line-up it's looking promising!
  2. i think there's more chance of me being special guest in the Park than the Stone Roses im afraid.

    so says John Squire.

  3. Wouldn't make much sense as CSN will only be finishing playing on the Pyramid a few minutes or so before the Special Guest slot Sat. night on The Park starts.
  4. Japanese Popstars are gonna be quality on saturday afternoon. The Whip should be good on the friday night as well.

DJ wise, whoever wanted techno go see SLAM on the G Stage, they are gonna be banging.

OOO i missed Paul Arnold as well when i went through so gonna have to find out where he's on, quality label with the best newsletters around.

Am i the only one who can't see the appeal with deadmau5?? all sounds the same to me.

Roll on this years dance village!!!!!

  5. im not a fan of the 'secret' gig. if you won't do me the dignity of announcing yourselves in plenty of time, then do not expect me to walk accross the site on the off chance it's someone i like! i had my fingers burned last year: went to the Park to see Dizzee and on walked Franz Ferdinand. it gave me a chance to get the beer in i suppose.

  6. Mine would be the point when the tent has been erected and you sit down in your chair, crack open your first beer, spark up, and hear the roar/cheer/whooping that can only be described as a 'mexican wave of sound' travelling accross the site, as peoples excitement reaches fever pitch!!!

    Whats yours?

  7. I think it's good in a different way.

The first time I went there was this edgy anarchic excitement that I've only really experienced since in Latin America. Nothing nasty (like the tent arson at Reading) - and I didn't witness any of the crime that was apparently going on. Just a sense that the normal rules didn't apply here and people were just doing exactly what they wanted. There was a crusty offering body piercings in the luxury of her filthy rug. Sound systems all over the place. It seemed like 50% of the festival was organised, and the other 50% "just happened". Exhiliarating. And great fun.

(To make sense of the Latin America comparison - I once spent Christmas in Antigua Guatemala, a fairly diluted taste of Latin America because it's an American-friendly party town. Because it was nearly Christmas, there were fireworks available in the markets. Stall after stall, right next to one another, with unboxed fireworks piled high, while the stallholder smoked. Some of the fireworks were designed for throwing. Mid 90s Glastonbury felt a bit like that.)

When the superfence went up, though, it was actually a relief. The crowds had become ridiculous. Plus of course the freeloaders were putting the license at risk. Just having fewer of those crazy crowd situations where you spend an hour trying not to get crushed while failing to get where you want to be, improved the festival.

A couple of really muddy years took the shine off for me. Still a great time for the most part, but it took effort to stay in the party spirit (and I have to admit that by Sunday evening in 2007 I'd had enough). Alas I missed 2008.

I think all the ingredients are there for an amazing festival. It won't ever be the same as it was. It will be as good, but for different reasons.

  8. Wow, what a reaction! I've not heard all of their songs, admittedly, but a few of the others, which don't do anything for me. From what I've heard, the ones I've not heard aren't much good either. Catching one songs out of a bands set doesn't seem to be contrdicting the point of a festival - the ultimate a la carte music experience. I thought the whole point of a festival was being able to see a band live without having to suffer the whole way through a load of rubbish songs just because you'd paid to be there.

Thanks to all who replied, particularly pedmills who saw them at the Pilton Party - that's the best indicator of how they're going to handle things on the day.

  9. Been listening to Stacked Up while in Oz and it doesnt 'arf make you feel young again! :P Fingers crossed they may play at the Big G and us oldies can all play at being 16 again like we were in 94! :P
  10. Not quite - I too remember the dancers still speeding it away in front of the Joe Bananas stall and soundsystem on the corner as the sun came up the following morning . . . Used to be another big screen and soundsystem (sometimes with some lazer or other light effects), if I remember right in the middle of the Babylon Markets area, on the corner around where the bandstand is if memory serves. Both were popular then all night as everyone was into techno at the time . . . Remember dancing my arse off to The Grid in front of it back in 1994.
  11. secret gigs can work both ways though.

i turned up at the Park last year on the Friday at the time the guide said Dizzee Rascal would be on, only for Franz Fredinand to walk on stage! i love Dizzee, but never been into Franz. i went and got a pint and had to wait an hour.

still a great night though <_<
