First year at Latitude, is there usually much going on on the Thursday?

There's not a huge amount but a few bits and pieces - although because there are only a few things some of them can get very busy (for example there's a full programme running in The Speakeasy (The 'literature / spoken word' arena) which will probably be very busy). Thursday is always good for a general wander round the site, checking out where everything is and seeing what odd goings on you can spot. I'd also recommend getting down to the Waterfront stage early for Crxss Platfxrm at 20.15 which looks like it will be quite a cool production - but again it will be very busy so get there early for a good view! We plan to get a beer and just chill out near the stage at least half an hour before - maybe more.

All of Thursday's attractions are live on the App BTW.

Confidence Man will be my no1 fun act, got a pub dancing last time I saw them so looking forward to seeing them on a much larger scale.  Seconded for Chali2na, and Oh My God! It's The Church! will be silly stuff on the main stage.  I'm presume we're betting without Grace Jones hulahooping on this thread.

Another vote for Confidence Man (the most fun you can have with your clothes off - although expect some down to underwear stripping in stage from Sugar Bones of the band). And also another vote for Oh My God It's The Church - saw them for the first time at Bestival last year (and saw them again after in a club) and they are hilarious and will get you dancing with their 'Sexy Jesus' message.

Hi everyone. I would appreciate your guidance on this.

It's my first time at Latitude this year and we are camping for the weekend. I am a semi-veteran of other festivals: Glastonbury, Green Man, Indietracks.

I am wondering – we are intending to arrive at the site early on Friday morning. Do you think we will be able to find a camping space easily enough? I have nightmare memories of Glastonbury, where it is mad race to get a camping space on the Wednesday.

Thanks for any advice on this.

Obviously you won't get the best spots but I'd still say it's a lot easier to find a space than arriving at Glasto late which can be a nightmare. Just head of the main paths and it shouldn't be too bad - probably more space on the outer edges of Green camping.

Homer was specifically talking about last year, not when it was on the IOW.

And I don't think it has particularly scaled down from last year - The budgets might just be being spread across the the day a bit more.

    Ah sorry!

    My mistake.

The capacity is the same this year as it was last.

  5. It’s a 30,000 capacity site. When it was on the IOW it was 50,000. And yes it’s a bit cheaper.

Oh, is it scaled down from last year as well then? I was just thinking it was smaller compared to the previous site's events. Are the tickets cheaper than last year too then? I can't keep up!

Belle and Sebastian have been added to the Friday

    Decent.

They headlined a few years back, so a good sub.

I saw them play The Troxy last month and they were on top form. They played songs from virtually all periods of their career and even threw in the rarely played Lazy Line Painter Jane (my favourite B&S song) as part of the encore.

TBH can't say I know many there outside of Wilson, Mods, Dub Pistols and Cribs, who is worth taking a look at from the rest?

Looking increasingly likely they are subbing. Can't see them paying to book a bigger sub than they need to at this stage, I just wonder why they're holding off on the early act, unless its already there, they just haven't bigged it up.

Without knowing your tastes it’s difficult to say, but I really like Stereo Honey - indie guitars and falsetto vocals. I saw them earlier this year and they were decent.

there's still more music to come, INC special guest, so calm your jets.

the 2nd announce is normally comedy/ arts based, but there was still a lot of music announced yesterday so instead of moaning why don't you listen to something new?

I always wonder when people complain that a line up is weak / poor - do they mean the quality isn't there or just that they haven't heard of the acts?

There's been lots of quality announced. I tend to look at the undercard of festivals as much as the headliners (the headliners of tomorrow....). This year I'm excited for Gang Of Youths, Black Honey, Superorganism, Hannah Peel, Naaz, Aemak, Jade Bird, Whenyoung, Confidence Man for starters....

It's a very weak second announcement on the whole for victorious but the first announcement was stronger name wise than previous years so probably evens out. Sleaford Mods I wonder where they will play, Sunday is quite hard to see who will end up where.

It’s funny how we perceive things differently isn’t it? I think it’s an excellent 2nd announcement.

Brian Wilson makes it for me but the undercard is looking good now as well.

I think comparing Bestival to Victorious is like chalk and cheese.

Yep. Totally different. I go to both (as Victorious is just a few mins walk from my house) but you can’t compare them.

The Bestival line up is far braver / diverse and is about the whole ‘experience’. Victorious is a lot less imaginative and immersive but good value for money if you just want to see a bunch of bigger names that maybe aren’t as big as they used to be.

oh c'mon ... I've seen far worse responses from organisers. Rob is accepting that what's just been announced might not be everyone's bag, and rather than ignoring it he's giving a reasoned personal response and trying to nudge the guy into going.

    100% agree.

Rob da Bank has always been very active on social media and wears his heart on his sleeve. The fact he tries to personally respond to people rather than just a PR company is great IMO.

  12. I think this is an interesting booking. When do many festival line ups are so so samey at least Bestival has a slightly different look with it’s top names.

I’ll reserve judgement about watching them until I have heard their stuff but at least it’s not just someone playing everywhere else.

i  think a large percentage of ticket sales are based on headliners... and their popularity..

agree that a great undercard can make the festival for those that love their music more than for 'being there'... but Latitude have increased capacity to 40k and so they have a lot of tickets to shift..

and to be fair, The Killers look like the perfect ticket shifters for this festival..I think it is a great booking..

It wouldn't surprise me if Saturday day tickets sell out fairly quickly.

Still think it'll be Underworld, mainly because I thought of it

Run DMC flopped at IOW so if it Rob is sensible he'll swerve that one

In what way did they flop at Isle of Wight?

Do you think if they are the other act they might suit a Bestival crowd more?

Have a feelin she played latitude recently, poss even last year?

Rae Morris did the Lake Stage. Not last year but either 2016 or 2015 (can't remember which)

Sigrid was in the woods at the I Arena last year. It was busy for her even then so if she returned she would definitely be on one of the two bigger stages.

    GUYS I'VE WORKED IT OUT

    RUN DMC

    EDIT:

Fucks sake you got there first haha

    Could be....

Also with Royal Blood not announced for Reading does this increase the chances of them being at Bestival perhaps? Rob da Bank has always alluded to the fact he’d like to have a rock headliner (they were going to have Muse once but that went a bit pear shaped).

  17. I think this is a good line up. The Killers will shift tickets, Solange is an interesting choice as headliner (perhaps Latitude trying to ensure they can defend any lack of diversity arguments) albeit Wolf Alice or Rag N Bone Man could have easily filled the slot. Alt-J an odd choice considering they headlined so recently but they are very 'Latitude' imo. There's a strong undercard musically and very much my cup of tea. Suspect I'll have plenty of clashes this year.

Edit: Forgot to say that yay for 2 of the best Oz bands out there playing. Gang of Youths produced one of the finest albums of last year (Go Farther In Lightness) which hasn't had that much profile in the UK even although in their homeland it was an award winner / no.1 and Confidence Man for stupid dance moves and cartoon pop silliness. Both very different but both very good.

I've no idea, but i do know they updated the 'areas' part of their website the other day, and seeing as Invaders is no longer listed there i'd guess it's gone.

Invaders of the Future was my one dissapointment last year due to the noisebleed and also I thought the booking on that stage wasn’t that strong with 3 or 4 exceptions. (I run a new music blog so maybe I’m too specialist!) Mind you, there’s hope for this year - some strong new music in The Big Top so hopefully the same for this stage.

  19. 19 minutes ago, eFestivals said:

    yep, agree with that.

Having downsized it can't be the same thing, but I reckon there's less of a "shit, we've lost loads of money and need to make it back" feel about this year's line-up compared to last year's.

Maybe that's because of moving the date to immediately after Camp Bestival? It must reduce their infrastructure costs? (Excluding contingency for if it rains heavily at Camp Bestival )
