As a self confessed Plastic Mermaids nutter I've been following her in parallel with PM. Rhain (Rhian), Flo and Hester were and are the main collaborators with PM and form the backbone of the choir/backing singers that accompany PM on tour and live. Rhain normally sings the 'Saturn' intro live as well as other bits. She has a proper powerful operatic voice, diametrically opposed to what you get with Wet Leg. Think they had a song called 'Girlfriend' out last year which got wiped from everywhere (no idea why). So not actually in Plastic Mermaids but all from the IoW and work closely with them.

Yeah - there are lots of IOW connections with Wet Leg. The bass player has played with Lauran Hibberd's band (another IOW artist) before.

Considering the size, Isle of Wight is doing the business at the moment: Wet Leg, Lauran Hibberd, Plastic Mermaids, Coach Party, Roberta Fidora all doing good stuff.

Can I ask something about Wet Leg? How are they on the bill of a fairly big festival when they've got one released song? What was the rest of their set?

They’ve been signed by Domino and Rhain (lead vocalist) has been doing it for a few years now solo. Check out her song Humdrum Drivel

Can't believe that I've been through the timetable and that I have only 1 main clash and 1 minor one - better than I thought.

The only main one is Arlo Parks vs Damon Albarn - but have seen both before (in fact I saw Arlo on the Lake Stage at Latitude) so not particularly bothered either way.

Another extremely unclear message about the LFT stuff. From this do I assume that they're checking covid status at the arena entrance each time you go in? Could interpret that post more than one way, just like the faqs page

I think the point here is they are saying your test expires after 48 hours so you need to retest, but reading between the lines, nobody is going to check. It's basically a 'this is what you should do but we have no way of enforcing it or checking it'

But if you go off site they will recheck.

Any recs for the Alcove, btw? Not really familiar with the acts playing there but be good to catch some.

Wet Leg (Very promising Isle of Wight duo signed to Domino Records)

Vlure (Imagine the cast of Trainspotting forming a shouty synth goth band with the occasional reference to Faithless, Depeche Mode and Killing Joke)

First time at Latitude, group of 5.  Is it worth turning up super early on Thursday to get a good spot?  Do people queue up before the 8am campsite opening?  What's it generally look like by 11am or so?  We have about a 3 or 3.5 hour journey so trying to work out how early to leave.  Thanks!

Obviously every year is different but generally whilst some turn up for gates there’s a gentle stream of people all day and evening.

I know so many people to have caught Covid recently.

I'm going to the cricket on Sunday, then to see Seasick Steve on Tuesday and I am terrified that I will not be attending Latitude as a result.

This is my biggest fear as well. I have 2 gigs this week (1 yesterday and 1 tonight) both socially distanced, relatively small venues etc but after that I'm not doing anything until Latitude. Whereas before I was worried about getting it because it could make me ill or worse now having been vaccinated but cases growing I'm worried because it will balls up my plans for Latitude!

The gig I went to last night was sold out but there were empty seats - possibly due to having to isolate?

The person I'm going to Latitude with is a teacher as well - so she's probably at higher risk of not being able to go than me, as my job has very little in person contact.

    Keeping everything crossed!

  9. Just noticed on the website that gates are opening earlier this year.

I wonder what the reason is?

    Traffic management?

Or longer time to get onto site due to vaccine / test checks?

As we have a 4/5 hour drive we won’t be arriving early anyway, but I wondered what others were doing?

I mean, Latitude is hardly Glastonbury in terms of the rush for camping space.

I've been listening to a lot of tracks by artists I've never heard of to get an idea of who to see and who to avoid. Seems to be a lot of very similar singer/songwriter acts, who do nothing for me at all.

Can anyone recommend any acts that I (we) might not have heard of that could be fun / interesting / exciting even?

Wet Leg (new cool indie 2 piece from the Isle of Wight)

Vlure - Imagine the characters from Trainspotting going to art school, getting into Depeche Mode and getting quite shouty / angry about it.

Yeah Ed Sheeran usually pops in - he came on in 2016 with someone I can’t remember in the BBC6 music tent

Foy Vance. He popped up to do a song with him. When they announced his name a lot of people outside the tent came sprinting in and then left after his song. I felt quite sorry for Vance but I’m sure he realised that would happen.

Thinking a little bit off piste...... if they work with the government to make it another ‘test event’ they could go ahead even if there are restrictions after the 19th. Then they could legitimately require a negative test / vaccination status as long as they whop in a few scientists to monitor things 😂 They’d just have to give refunds to those who don’t want to participate or test positive.

And at the time I said this as a bit of a joke 🤣 and now here we are!

If all restrictions are lifted on the 19th, they shouldn't need to have tests.

The wording of the government roadmap doesn't say all restrictions will be lifted on stage 4. It says they will be eased. (For example Covid certification or testing might still be in place).

So there could be further testing after Stage 4 to abolish all restrictions perhaps? A secret stage 5 perhaps?

This is the actual wording on the government website:

"We hope to reopen remaining premises, including nightclubs, and ease the restrictions on large events and performances that apply in Step 3. This will be subject to the results of a scientific Events Research Programme to test the outcome of certain pilot events through the spring and summer, where we will trial the use of testing and other techniques to cut the risk of infection. The same Events Research Programme will guide decisions on whether all limits can be removed on weddings and other life events."

  14. Did anyone see the ministers response to the Events Research Programme question in parliament today?

If not you can watch it here https://parliamentlive.tv/event/index/c1050813-307c-4efa-9825-96f1d9a9e855?in=12:37:18

What I took from that is "We're not going to tell you anything unless it's bad news, until just before the 19th July," which is of course not helpful at all to most festivals - unless  you have inside info.

I feel bad for the kendal calling crew, that is a tough break. I think that reading between the lines of their statement and the latitude statement that latitude is the test event that was chosen.

Yeah it’s terrible for them. The fact the government haven’t published the guidance and are looking at further test events suggests that not all restrictions will be eased on July 19th for festivals.

Given the Kendal announcement, my suggestion here is now not sounding so off piste!

Seems it's a premium upgrade entrance so fast track really. A covered grandstand at the main stage subject to availability and a bar, food and toilet area for passholders. Doesn't look great value to me.

Also taking a 9 year old and 6 year old to their first festival

I got given an upgrade to premium / vip a few years back. Really not worth the money - the grandstand viewing area is way to the side of the main stage - I prefer to be closer so only watched 1 band from it the whole weekend. Queue for the VIP bar was just as busy as the main one. The only advantage was there was no queue for the loos.

The Haim thing is interesting, I've just looked at the Razzmatazz Barcelona and the gig is a reschedule from one which should have happened last year before mad cool. Mad cool has been rescheduled again for next year so it is odd that Haim would play a 2000 capacity gig in Spain without festival dates in that county to support it,  doesn't work financially. I wouldn't hold much stock in it tbh, but the date is still on the website so who knows. Theoretically you could come and do a latitude headline and Spain. They were in the UK for the glasto live steam and that was a one off thing. I guess we'll find out in 40mins

    Yeah it's all quite weird.

    They didn't getpaid for Glastonbury

  20. I don’t know how this works but if you search the words ‘Haim tour dates’ on Google it lists Latitude 2021 as a date with the source being the Latitude website? Obviously the internet can be wrong 😉 but looks a possibility!
