Got my first brixton windmill one tonight, sinead o brien

Enjoy! :). I was absolutely gutted to miss out on a ticket for that one.

I notice their announcements have dried up a little. Keen to know how they're dealing with the new restrictions - I was told there last week that there would be changes, but that the gigs would keep going. I believe they might be signing people in now?

I agree this is pretty bad and anyone who booked tickets for Baxter need to get their money back but Bill Ryder-Jones’ solo stuff is really, really good. Well worth a listen if you haven’t heard it yet - VERY different to The Coral.

I think it's pretty good on record too, but I've seen him live twice and have been very disappointed.

Yes, they've just added that because I emailed them. They said he was never playing and the original listings must have been a mistake.  Very odd and quite frustrating for those of us who booked tickets for that reason.

That's out of order. He was quite clearly down to headline the night across multiple listings and websites. Just seen he's now been replaced by Bill Ryder-Jones. I'd definitely want my money back!

SOld out know im afraid it seems, sorry. I'll post if more tickets become available!

Nicely done with the tickets! Who did you go for?

I looked at Barbican membership, but it didn't seem worth it for £59 with the uncertainty over how much they can put on over the winter. Will be trying for Richad Dawson, Erlend Cooper, The Divine Comedy and maybe Emmy The Great and Shabaka Hutchings tomorrow on general.

Do you mean in a specific area? In Bolton restaurants are takeaways only and pubs have to shut by 10pm. Rest of the country the only change is the 6 people limit becomes law (so you can't go to the pub with more than 5 people). I'd assume the same for socially distanced gigs.

I mean countrywide. My reading of it, from what I've seen so far anyway, would put a cap on indoor gigs of 6 people:

"Social gatherings of more than six people in England will not be allowed in law from Monday 14 September. The new rule applies to people in private homes, indoors and outdoors, and places such as pubs, restaurants, cafes and public outdoor spaces."

I appreciate places like The Windmill have been letting in 30 people (from more than two households) though, so will that have to change to 6, or is there no change as those people are not deemed to be socialising with others outside of who they came with? I assume the latter from that you're saying, as must've been the case before? I mean we all know it's not true and can't be in a pub, even if you try to keep somewhat apart, but presumably that's the letter of the law.

If they're not shutting pubs and restaurants I don't see why they would shut down socially distanced concerts.

Is that the case? I've seen mixed messages (surprise, surprise!). I guess we'll wait to see what nonsense flip flop farts out tomorrow!

  7. Tried for tickets to Baxter Dury and Orlando Weeks, but they were tables of 2/4/6. I know I said before that it was fair enough if that's the only way that venues could put things on, but I had no idea that was going to be the case for this gig until the sales opened at 11 and I feel pretty pissed about it! By 11:01, before I'd even had time to think about it, let alone try to convince anyone, the tables of 2 (which were in back corners of the vegnue anyway) had all gone.

Of anyone has a spare seat on a table and doesn't mind sharing, I'll be keen to join.

Great find! I'll be trying to get tickets for that for sure.

I've got an inkling that something big might happen at The Windmill this Friday/Saturday. There's nothing in their calendar for those two nights and last Saturday they announced a Black Midi show at the last minute, with them referred to as the 'house band'. Keep your eyes peeled!

Hey - thanks so much for putting this thread together. I actually play in a band and we're desperately looking for opportunities to play. We're an alt-rock/indie band in the style of The National/Nick Cave/PJ Harvey, but most of the opps I've seen are for acoustic gigs. Please do let me know if you see anywhere putting on full band gigs :)

Best of luck getting started again! I assume you guys are London based given the Van post?

As @zahidf said the Windmill have had daily acts for the past couple of weeks (https://www.windmillbrixton.co.uk/). I even had reason to use ear plugs the other night for Rattletooth, which was the first time since lockdown! They're definitely putting on full band shows now with the usual production, but with a seated capacity of 30.

The Victoria (http://www.jaguarshoes.com/) have had events as well promoted by Egyptian Elbows (https://www.egyptianelbows.com/) and Hard of Hearing (https://hardofhearingmusic.com/), but I'm not ware of any more upcoming. Might be worth reaching out regardless.

  10. I've been to five now. The best so far was Bull at The Victoria on Sunday. It got very busy, but with everyone seated and being outside it actually felt safe (who knows if anything really is) and was the first time I've been able to almost let go. It just felt so right to be chatting and drinking with strangers, meeting new people and enjoying some good music together.

I even won a load of merch (and beer) in the #SaveOurVenues raffle!

The organisers (Egyptian Elbows & Hard of Hearing Music) put on an extra date on Monday, after the 3 week run of Sundays due to the popularity. I can't see any more at the moment, but it would be awesome to continue this through at least until autumn properly hits.

  11. I went along to The Windmill last night for the first time since Lockdown. It was in theory sold out, but there were quite a few empty chairs. I would say that I was one of only 10-12 people not directly associated with the venue/acts.

It did feel strange and awkward and the music didn't particularly blow me away either, although James Martin and Platonica Erotica were by no means bad. I just think it's hard to lose yourself in the music perched on an uncomfortable wooden stool and wondering whether you should even be in a pub at all! The first act, Jack Merrett (of Famous) was shambolic but good fun and actually broke the ice fairly well, but the set up didn't feel conducive to building any atmosphere. Will give it another go, but I'm far from convinced.

The Big Sheep near me in Bideford North Devon have been putting on socially distanced gigs. You buy a circle in a field with a stage and can have up to 6 people from 2 households I think. Bit expensive if only 2 of you but I think they are now selling circles for less people.  Haven’t been my self but looks OKish. Have to stay in the circle with only one leaving at a time to get drinks etc. Don’t know what the atmosphere is like. Beans on toast played the other week which tempted me but don’t know anyone else who would go round this way. Usually go to Glastonbury on my own and meet friends there.

I completely get that - I usually tend to go alone and just meet people I know (or not)! I find these 'buy a table for 4' situations frustrating, but I guess it's the only viable option for some venues to get close to making any event worthwhile.

I've also ended up much closer than I'd probably like to others, as we've ended up sharing tables. That has been outdoors though, which just about seems alright, maybe? I've also found sitting down (as has been the case at everything I've been to so far), to be a strange experience in general. It's very difficult to fully lose yourself in the gig too IMO. It's a whole other topic, but I find gigs hugely important for mental health and would really struggle with this current format on a bad day. It takes much more effort to engage and to have to meet people, whether you feel up to it or not.

  13. I've been to a couple of gigs over the past 10 days and have 5 more lined up over the next couple of weeks. A little round up of what I'm aware of in London.

The Victoria in Dalston have had gigs in their garden the past couple of Sunday afternoons and have another this week - Bull are headlining. Donations to the Music Venue Trust. There is a donation option on DICE, but it's first-come first-served rather than being a ticket. The production this week was way up on the first, although the noise restrictions are obviously stricter being outside close to houses and talkers are an issue.

The Windmill in Brixton have also had a couple of socially-distanced indoor gigs (30 tickets each, I believe). I haven't made it to one yet, but have got tickets for three of their upcoming gigs. New dates seem to be being added most days on their website and tickets are available there too for a fiver a pop (https://www.windmillbrixton.co.uk/).

I also just won a pair of tickets for Norman Jay at an undisclosed location in Dalston tomorrow night (again, only 60 tickets), although apparently doors are at 5 (?!) which is going to prove very tricky after work.

  14. It's far from normal out there and obviously still a very precarious time, especially for small venues. This article yesterday suggests that it's unfeasible for most to hold any events any time soon, but the money (for those who were even lucky enough to get any), isn't going to last for long: https://www.nme.com/features/coronavirus-socially-distanced-gigs-concerts-uk-government-guidance-2734674

However, gigs in small outdoor settings or with limited capacity and enforced social-distancing in some indoors venues seem to be cropping up with increasing regularity. I thought I'd start this thread to differentiate from talk of 'standard format' gigs in the main Tour Announcements & Upcoming Gigs thread and to provide space to discuss all unusual or creative ideas for hosting gigs and whether we even agree with it at all.

Please feel free to share info on any you've heard about, are going to, or reviews of those you've attended so far!

Nuha Ruby Ra wins Rising! Well done to her!

I was lucky enough to catch her super early at the Village Underground (in a stellar line up alongside Meatraffle, Squid and Warmduscher) early in the year and she was hugely engaging impressive. Still a bit of a surprise to me though as I assumed The Lounge Society were hot favourites.

What do people think so happen with there being two Rising winners in 2021? Obviously both can't open Mountain!

For those who are in London, Nuha Ruby Ra is playing at the Windmill on 8th September - one of their social-distanced indoor trial gigs alongside The Rebel: https://www.windmillbrixton.co.uk/events/2020-09-08-the-rebel-residency-2020-night-number-2-the-windmill

Line-ups for first two weeks now confirmed.

Tomorrow (Sunday 16th): Seabass, Honeyglaze x Tugboat Captain, Sleep Eaters

Sunday 23rd: Oscar Browne, Blackaby, Rainn Byrns, Dan Lyons

Very much looking forward to live music tomorrow, but a little nervous as it'll be my first time in any kind of pub/venue/eatery in 5 months. Will report back on how it all goes.

Well, that was... strange. It was amazing to be back watching live music in an intimate setting. I had my 'gig smile' back and felt waves of joy at what was happening! However, you had to sit on picnic benches and being by myself I had to find somewhere to perch with groups which was a bit awkward given social distancing etc. It was definitely too tight to feel comfortable at the moment and not a single person wore a mask. I met some great people though - I'd forgotten how many like-minded people you find at gigs to chat with! I tried to stand at the back occasionally, but it was long and thin garden and you couldn't hear that much. Security wanted everyone sitting too (seemingly except the two people stood directly in front of me near the front through the last band). Another awkward part was going into the pub, especially to use the toilet. I'm sorry to those who've been back frequenting pubs for a while but it still doesn't sit right with me.

Quick band review. Seabass were really pretty good and had a full band - wouldn't mind seeing them in a proper venue, as support to someone perhaps; Honeyglaze x Tugboat Captain - just the two of them, but played some enjoyable stuff from both bands and had some good melodies which fitted the setting; Sleep Eaters weren't very good at all - I think they were folksy but their sound didn't carry at all well in the venue, so possibly not their fault. All very chilled and low sound levels given the setting and having to be careful with the neighbours, but I think the fuller band of Seabass still worked best.

They've said there'll be another lineup announcement within the next few weeks, and that one of the headliners is a "big band" for them.

    Any guesses?

The National are around for the Thursday or possibly Friday. Sparks are also for Thursday or possibly Saturday. Fontaines D.C. are also playing dates but have gaps that weekend.

Looks like there's some actual live music happening in the garden of the Victoria in Dalston over the next three Sunday afternoons. 'The Great Outdoors', hosted by Egyptian Elbows and Hard of Hearing in aid of the Music Venue Trust from £3.50 upwards with donations added to that. I'd imagine it's very limited capacity.

Link to the first one here: https://dice.fm/event/5er9k-egyptian-elbows-x-hard-of-hearing-giveth-the-great-outdoors-16th-aug-the-victoria-london-tickets. First week is Sleep Eaters, Tugboat Captain, Honeyglaze & Seabass. Other two line-ups also have these bands as placeholders on event pages, but these are TBA.

I picked up tickets to all 3 weeks - I think I caught Tugboat Captain somewhere once and they were fairly enjoyable, but I've not heard of the others. It's LIVE MUSIC though! (hopefully).
