Why would they play two festivals in Belgium??

For money, I would assume. They would not be a headliner at RW, though. Sub-headliner, or even sub-sub, depending on the night. Live /s Live seems to have taken down the page, though, so who knows.

  2. Smashing Pumpkins are not a big enough name to headline this festival, correct? Unless it was opposite a less rock-oriented act, I think. If we pencil in the Pumpkins, they are probably a sub-headline act, maybe in The Killers spot, something like that. And Weezer the same, perhaps they would play on the same night for travel reasons.

We are assuming Stromae and Foo Fighters as headliners for two of the nights, I think, but I want to know!

I have stayed in a Sahara 4 at a previous edition. Yes they can still get chilly overnight, you do get a bed off the floor  with a pillow and duvet (but not very thick). I was happy I took a sleeping bag to sleep in under the duvet. It was warm enough for me. No power provided inside the tents ( at least in a Sahara).

Thanks for the heads up, I wonder if the non-tents (the wooden buildings) are less cold at night. I imagine I'll try to find an AirBnb and just head it every morning, it is quite a lot to ask a new festival goer to endure four days and five nights without proper showers and bathrooms! 🙂

I'm wondering when we will get the first headliner and ticket sales, I imagine it will be very soon....

  4. Can anyone provide first-hand knowledge about the different "premium" camping packages from prior years? They all seem fairly similar and expensive, obviously, but I'm coming with someone who is not used to festival camping. I'm considering maybe Boho Suite 1 or 2, Kayuto 2, Tanami 2, Lodge 2, Sahara 2.... any comments?

I am also concerned about it being very cold in the tents - I have had trouble sleeping at night when the temperature drops, and my partner is prone to getting very chilly. Is the power provided sufficient to use an electric heater, if needed? Any help is appreciated!

  5. Just to rewind, Foo Fighters are almost a lock, Coldplay may be too big, but they have a huge gap in their tour and no shows in Belgium, Metallica is definitely out because they're in Poland, Rammstein is out because they're elsewhere during the festival and they have a Belgium show June 27 anyhow, Gorillaz or Blur seem to always be in play, The Killers just scrapped their new album, but Pearl Jam just announced theirs, Depeche Mode will be touring in 2024, Stromae will probably make up for missing 2023, Faith No More cancelled in 2022 but isn't playing any shows any more... but Mr. Bungle is. Primus, A Perfect Circle, and Tool are all touring in some way in 2024. People have thrown out Green Day and Avenged Sevenfold, but I'm not sure if those are based on evidence or just names. System of a Down is doing 2024 festivals.

What are we missing? Isn't the first headliner likely announce next week (and if it's Foo Fighters, do we care? Because they already seem like a complete lock)?

A bit weird to say this, actually. I am not against bands like Muse or Green Day or RHCP, but doesn't booking those bands make your festival more like any other festival than -lets say- Dua Lipa or Lana Del Rey (who rarely play(ed) festivals like this)? Again: I do like (love) rock music, but it's exactly these older headliners that make a lineup a bit like any other festival from the last 20 years.

You may not like them, but it was Stromae / Stormzy that made the last RW lineup a bit more unlike other editions (whereas Arctic Monkeys, Muse, RHCP, QOTSA all played it many, many, many times and where a bit 'been there, done that').

I'm all for having a good guitar driven band that have never headlined the festival before though (like Tool 2019 and The Strokes 2020).

No. You sound like you have not looked at any other festival lineups recently. What used to be 3-4 alternative rock and popular bands have become one rock band, two huge pop acts and a DJ. You get one band featured across a whole litany of festivals - say, Pearl Jam or Foo Fighters, and you have to deal with nonsense like Travis Scott taking up $1m of the festival's budget.

I'm not saying you shouldn't like Travis Scott, but you can like Travis Scott at 30 other festivals all summer long. Few other festivals are providing the Nine Inch Nails - The Cure - Rage Against the Machine type of experience, and the festival called "ROCK Werchter" with a long history of featuring rock bands, should probably keep doing that, lest they become just another pop festival.

You can keep Lizzo. No, thank you.

Yeah, no shade on her particular form of entertainment, but every additional non-rock headliner leans this festival closer to being... every other festival. We don't need that. Keep bringing young acts up at 4pm and giving them a stage, but don't spend $1m of the festival's money on somebody you can see at every other festival.

  8. Thanks for the quick reply! I didn't realize they were so close to the festival - that's pretty rad.

I do know the nights get very cold, and that's an issue as well... maybe that's not as bad in the glamping cabins? Nonetheless, the information is super helpful.

  9. Quick simple question - I've always camped when I visit, but I'll be traveling with someone who may not love the camping life... so, what is the specific *town name* where we board the shuttle to RW, and can return to buy snacks and supplies? Is that Leuven? I think they would prefer to have a nice shower and breakfast, then shuttle in later in the morning. I'm shopping hotels now and hoping for Foos and Pearl Jam....

  10. I'm wondering how receptive they are to 80s acts that are touring currently - Tears for Fears and Depeche Mode, Aerosmith on their "final" tour. Foo Fighters seems like an absolute lock, and Pearl Jam just announced a 2024 album, so maybe we will see them again.

    I love this festival!

Can people answer if Rock Werchter is as good as it was? Got talking to someone at Y Not who went and said if you go just go for the hive without question.

I attended in 2018 and 2022 and it was incredible both years.

But I'm going for the performances, not for the dance tent drunkenness. 😉

  12. Gotta be honest, I was with a group of about 12 people at AM RW 2018 and every one of us was a fan... and every one of us was completely bored by their set. As a group we loved The Killers, Nine Inch Nails, Gorillaz... hey, even Nick Cave (although they didn't know 90% of his songs), but we were already to dance our tails off and we ended up just sitting down and drinking. And chatting. That's never a good sign.

And I've seen AM in their pre-worldwide phenom shows where we did dance our tails off. Not saying anybody else should feel differently - we like what we like - but we all wanted really bad to have fun at that show. It barely registers as a memory now.

  13. I was thankfully confused about the "VIP" section. The front area of the pit is definitely separated, and I saw a stream of purple coming from backstage-type areas walking and talking back and forth. No actual fans, just assholes on cell phones. Lol. I naturally assumed they overpaid for that access!

  14. Friendly reminder to all those coming next week, it's about 6,000 steps (a mile or two) from the shuttle dropoff to the front of the festival. There were multiple older folks nearly passed out today, and it was cool weather. Be careful! Also, was the pit area of the main stage always 100% VIP? I don't remember that from 2018, but I was only up really close at tent shows, I think.

  15. I count 9 acts I'm at least moderatly interested in seeing on Saturday. Heck, after a couple banger days relaxing with Phoebe Bridgers and Leon Bridges before the poppy feel-goodness of 21pilots and Imagine Dragons is going to be fun.

Granted, I wouldn't pay to see 21 or Imagine, they're not my vibe, but that's part of the point of festivals. And losing FNM and QotSA hurt the fest a smidge, but it's still loaded.

  16. This might be kind of a dumb question - is there anyplace on or near the grounds (walking distance) if someone needed high-speed internet? Like, reliable high speed internet, I mean.

I was considering renting a Wifi hotspot and bringing it to the campground, but I don't know if that's a solution. Any wisdom on this?
