I agree system every one went crazy the rest of the festival the crowd were quite tame. Arcade fire refused to play unless they livened up. Make of this information what you will. You will also see lots of people with ear buds in.

Okay, I don't understand this part... ear buds? For what? Are you suggesting they're listening to other music while at a concert?

    Legit confused by this statement.

Has anyone got any interesting things to do in Madrid - mid to late afternoon?

I'm sure there's plenty to do in the capital but realistically I can't imagine I'll be schlepping around museums and such whilst hungover and in the heat (as much as I'd like to visit Madrid culturally).

Just looking for things that compliment the festival's opening hours. Something not too strenuous and to combat the heat.

Crazy suggestion: Don't be hungover? Bring a nice hangover cure or maybe don't drink to insane proportions, and then go see the museums and such. Or just go to the beach and get some Vitamin A.

Now it's a weird one with Werchter crowds.

Let's take some examples from last year. (Of course all my own opinion).

System of a Down, completely and utterly mental. So much so that Daron said we'd been the best audience of the tour (like yeah he may say that to every crowd but they genuinely seemed thrilled with the response).

Foo Fighters, who I expected to have a huge response and big crowd was a little underwhelming, despite being the last act of the whole festival. They usually do a massive set of bows, walk around, bow together, wave, and then go off 5 minutes later. But the band almost seemed disappointed by the crowd. Maybe it was to do with the fireworks but even so, the Werchter crowd never seemed to get into their stuff.

There was a noticeable difference in reaction, depending who the band is ?

System of a Down is not really a band to compare *anybody* with as far as audience reaction goes... maybe Rage Against the Machine. Those are the only shows I've been to where the crowd was so insane they nearly shut the show down.... and one time, they did.

Foos attract every kind of fan... old, young, casual, mental... and they tour all the time. SOAD rarely tour and attract the moshiest of mosh pits.

  4. Getting incredibly stoked for this festival. While listening to Nine Inch Nails today I reflected on my favorite moment from one of their concerts ever... the video montage for "Right Where it Belongs" on the NIN/QotSA "With Teeth" tour. Here's a cam of that.

  6. To add to the Tentenzo posts... I just bought a package with a pop-up tent, sleeping bag, earplugs, a pillow, and some cheap airbed thing for 70 Euros to be picked up at The Hive.

I probably could have gotten the same junk for about 50 Euros from Amazon or some such, but the convenience of picking them up at the site is worth it, in my opinion! Hope they run smoothly and speak some English. ;)

  7. So to clarify... the bus is just for getting back to the city center after 2:30 am so people don't get stranded with no transport, right? It only runs towards the end of the show (late night/early morning), there is to shuttle TO the festival. Right?

    Hi,

May be a stupid question but are the tokens literally tokens or will they come in raffle ticket strips or e cards ? Just trying to work out how easily I'll lose them

    Cheers.

I love this post. It's like... "I want to gauge just how hard I'll work at losing these things." :)

Everything about this festival is f'ing delightful to me right now.

Glad I’ve seen the updated poster now, was a bit disappointed they didn’t do t-shirts with the line up on the back, not one for them normally but the RW line ups are the best I’ve been to... so I’ve made my own ? So if any of you see a guy in this with a Jupiler in each hand, it’s me

Are you doing an updated shirt for 2018? That would be popular with us lineup nerds! :)

Same (but Valencia). The idea of heading straight back to work wasn't working for me.

We should have an official Mad Cool takeover of a spot in Valencia since many of us seem to be headed there. :)

I've never been and I cannot wait!

Thanks for posting. So no Closer, The Hand That Feeds, Hurt and Copy of A? This setlist is s lot different compared to last summers setlist. I will wait until Rock Werchter’s setlist but if the setlist is like this, I will probably go see Glass Animals or Future Islands instead since they don’t play their top songs.

I think expecting a band to play every hit every show forever is a bit silly, really. If you're a long-time NIN fan you'll get plenty of what you like with Wish, Gave Up, Head Like a Hole, Burn, and March of the Pigs... they have to make cuts to play the new songs the band is currently interested in sharing. Nothing wrong with that.

I mean, Radiohead went years without playing Creep, and also ditched My Iron Lung because it was too popular. NIN has been playing Hurt and Closer consistently for a long, long time. I'm sure they'll get back to them eventually.

We're doing a few days in Valencia afterwards too. I reckon we'll be too knackered and partied out so we just want to chill on the beach and drink a few beers. Ibiza is great if you want to go partying and hang out, otherwise I wouldn't bother making the trip. There are a few really nice bits but not near the main tourist areas, so probably not worth going to for a day.

Thanks for the reply! I imagine I'll be tired as hell after all the travel and stuff, but Ibiza looks like something everyone should try. I imagine I'll just relax in Valencia. Maybe buy ya'll a beer! :)

  13. I'm hanging out in Valencia after Mad Cool, and just realized it's an easy hop to Ibiza. Any opinions on whether it's worthwhile to jump over to Ibiza for a night/day instead of staying put in Valencia?

I'm a single guy, but not really into the 20ish party/EDM scene, and the beach in Valencia is spectacular on its own. Convince me?

Uber may be an option but its not a short drive from Leuven to Brussels. Also surge pricing will be a bitch.

Yet another reason to stay at Rock Werchter! :)

Is anyone else so completely stoked they can hardly stand it? I honestly can't believe how many great bands I'm going to see. Overload.

So you can only watch the football if you pay extra and you're camping? That sucks.

Are you really complaining that they have amenities for campers that non-campers don't get? You can watch football at home, or in a bar, or wherever else you choose. This is an amenity for those of us who have chosen to hang in the Hive for four days.

    Folks will complain about anything.

For sure, so glad we decided to do it. Only line up which is arguably better (for me anyway) is Rock Werchter.

That's why I'm doing BOTH! LOL. Very few conflicts if I can use RW as the conflict-breaker! :)

Also, just got my Badmotorfinger tattoo, so looking forward to seeing some SG love in the PJ crowd.

Hi! This will be my first experience for a major festival with clashes. I have to choose between QOTSA and Portugal. The Man on Saturday :(; other clash with Alice in Chain and Arctic Monkeys (I'm surprised for this one; this one was unexpected) . How easy it is to move from one stage to another (e.g. Stage 1 to 4). I know the layout is still unknown. I have a VIP ticket (good only for both main stages). Thank you.

If you've never seen QotSA, see QotSA. They're really great at putting on a rock 'n roll show now. But I feel you on that conflict!

I think I'm doing Arctics > Alice in Chains and Kasabian > Justice as well. But not many other conflicts for me.

The trains will be running at 4am? That's accurate?

There is no public transport to Brussels after the headliners. Shuttlles go to Leuven only.
    1. Take the first train in the morning
    2. Taxi (expensive + always chaos)
    3. Rent a car

    4. Stay for the awesome Sunday shows! :)

Are there no Uber/Lyft type ridesharing options in Belgium? That's what we do in the States!

70-75 minutes for QOTSA? or am i missing something here (hopefully)

No, that's their normal set time at most festivals. Last year they co-headlined Riot Fest out here and did 75 minutes. They did do 90 in Houston earlier this year, they they were probably the biggest name by far (other than Beck, who was on a different night).

Hopefully they'll just dump "Make it Witchu" since that's 5 mins of set time they use every show. LOL.

  20. In Texas we have Float Fest July 21-22, 2018. Tickets are reasonable, there's camping and a bunch of water, as it's river-based. But it's central Texas, between Austin and San Antonio, so far away from other states by car. Still, Austin is fun to visit! https://floatfest.net/#tickets

Lollapalooza is August 2-5, no camping, and it's a huge festival... but Chicago is a great town to visit. Might be worth considering.

    Here's a resource to consider: https://www.musicfestivalwizard.com/festival-guide/us-festivals/page/6/

Coachella does that every year and that makes it really hard to plan and get ready for the festival at the same time. If we know it beforehand, we will worry much less about clashes since we will more time to plan. Also, half of Mad Cool's lineup will be at Rock Werchter a week before and most of them will probably play the same setlist in Madrid.

Coachella is the worst in so many ways, from ticket price to set times (subheadliners with 55 minute sets. Yuck.) to disclosure of the schedule. I don't really understand the hipster fascination with that fest, it's easily my least favorite of the big US fests! (Of course, I'm not a big EDM guy, either... and that's most of the draw. Or it was before POP took over.)

  22. I'm an American (from Austin) flying in for Rock Werchter and Mad Cool... staying alone in the Hive. I'd love to make some international friends in the campground! This is also my first international festival after tons of ACL and Coachella and Lollapalooza and the like.

Interested in all the big rock acts... Pearl Jam, QotSA, NIN, Gorillaz, Killers, so forth!
