I would say they're pretty effective. I very rarely see one that is broken or overflowing, and the new guarding thing they've had in them in recent years has stopped the old issue of cups/cans blocking the pipes. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I looked this up many years ago, as one of my school fire drill's was also treated to a Red Arrows flypast.
You can request a flypast and provided they are in the area/there is a justifiable reason for their participation they will usually do it I think.
