They drop it in every now and then. Seem to rotate one or two of the earlier singles (including Cattails, actually, which doesn't even feel that old). More than anyone I can think of, my sense is that they almost make up a different setlist each time, though, so I'm not giving out hope!...

Yeah I've told my group not to hold their hopes out for any particular older song (other than masterpiece) when it comes to them.

Having been to Green Man for the first time, it was hard not to make comparisons to EOTR so here goes -

-I preferred GM's stage set up. No risk of full tents, good viewing areas everywhere + distance between stages is okay). My usual festival self is rushing between stages. I didn't do that at all at GM.

-downside: assuming the  rain is a  regular occurrence, i thought the conditions could have been handled better. Perhaps this is harsh though I'd highlight that having a big part of the main tent be a 'no-go' area is not great.

    - vibe: a lot of areas  have a Garden Stage vibe  in the sense of families sitting around. Doesn't bother me but seems to irritate a few.. at the other end, there were more pockets of bright off their tits young 'uns than I remember from eotr (to be clear not a lot, i suppose it stands out at such a festival)

    - shops/drinks-an element of 'you need to know'..I only discovered the cider 'festival' late, the main merch place sold out of most stuff before I realised it existed. The beer courtyard is nice, slightly better than eotr (which I already consider really good for a festival)

-coaches (if you take them) appeared even less coordinated than other festival experiences. Leaving on the Monday was a mess

    - eotr has this unbeatable magic where wandering around getting lost feels part of the joy. GM doesn't have that but on the other hand, the actual music bit was a better experience

Yeah the forest part of End of The Road is the one thing I miss really. Can never manage it anymore with it always being at the start of the academic year.

  3. Loving Johnny Flynn so far, I'd never seen the detectorists tv show before but after listening to his theme tune for it non stop I've given it a go. The lineup is getting me into new telly, let alone new music.

True enough, I love those albums. They still belted out a rip roaring version of Masterpiece and Randy 18 months ago on their last trip to Dublin. And everything else sounded fantastic live. They'll be great.

Yeah I'm really enjoying a few of the newer tracks especially spud affinity and that single, Vampire Empire.

Gotta tell myself I've already seen them do that older material at eotr 2017 and gm 2019.

  5. I know there's no point living in the past and bands probably get sick of playing their hits but it's a damn shame how little Big Thief play from their first two albums. Looking at their setlists from last year and they play almost entirely new material, which is good but no masterpiece (badum tshh!)

Agree with others ….weak headliners this year.

I really don’t get the fuss with Big Thief . Saw them in small venue around the time of Masterpiece , might have been first UK dates . Guitarist Buck Meeks was the highlight but I really struggled with the singers over emoting . We get it, you are a sensitive soul. It just got embarrassing tbh. I had to walk away watching them at a festival a few years ago for the same reason. Was it GM ? Can’t remember.

All my opinion of course, as plenty of folk seem to like them. Just don’t see them as an exciting headline act myself.

I was a lot more excited to see them before I saw on their setlist that they hardly play any of their first two albums. I'm sure the new stuff is great but there's so many fantastic songs they're leaving behind.

    Course, i AM a miserable f**ker. 😉

I've definitely felt a little similar but I think built it up in my head that they were going to get some really standout unique headliners after kraftwerk and devo.

Thanks for doing this - it must have taken some effort.

That said, if the clashes between Jon Hopkins/Explosions in the Sky and Big Thief/Black Country New Road actually happen, I will hold you personally responsible.

There's no way they'll clash big thief and black country new road. The two bands feel very similar now that bcnr have shifted their style.

  9. Am I missing something with Jon Hopkins? All seems very ambient to me on Spotify, are his sets a bit more lively in person? I found something similar with four tet though so probably just not my style of music.

  10. Yeah that's a pretty disappointing set of headliners but some great acts in the undercard. I love BCNR but I'm surprised they're back already, hopefully with new music. Their set in 2022 was my highlight of the weekend.

Can't believe I was getting excited for The Smile, Pj Harvey or Pixies and we've got the waitrose equivalent of British "punk".

The Decemberists seem quite nailed on to me at this point

Not too familiar with them outside of Parks and Rec cameo, I'll give them a listen. Would be fun to get someone like them that isn't in the UK too often.

  12. My final prediction for headliners is Jesus and Mary Chain, Big Thief, Pixies and PJ Harvey.

They might not  be able to afford pixies and pj harvey but I can't think of anyone else who is the right size, free that weekend and doesn't charge a fortune to perform. A surprise headliner that is nowhere else is the dream though.

Very interesting, do you know the circumstances out of interest?

From what I can remember, I think it was something like the band had said they'd headline back in 2013/2014 during the Vampires of the City tour but had to cancel before they were announced. So they did 2018 as a "favour"/small warm up before their big return.

Might be wrong but that's what I remember hearing at the time.

Primavera are advertising them as a European exclusive.

Makes sense, they'll probably come back next summer with a load of dates.

Similar to when they did end of the road in 2018 and then Glastonbury and lots of other festivals in 2019.

  15. They've been pretty open about who they can afford in the past, I feel like Vampire Weekend would be one of those acts but you never know, it was a shock when End of the Road booked them but I know there were certain circumstances there.

Are you thinking of Mount Kimbie? Mount Kimbie did the same slot the year before (2018).  Could potentially see either cropping up this year (or even Floating Points again) but maybe they’ll go for someone different for this year.

    Hahaha yes apologies!
