This pollster tends to be pretty swingy. Labour’s lead is the same as it was back at the beginning of Jan and end of Jan. It’ll probably swing back next week.

The 2 main pollsters show very strong Labour leads still.

Well this was a shock to no one.

no, it is purely just speculation, and the headline is usual sensationalist stuff to get noticed....but the point really is that businesses that Labour have been courting have been expressing dislike at some of the workers rights stuff...and unions have been telling labour not to uturn on it...just part of the real world stuff that Labour will face when they get into power.

Business will do that but as of yet there is no sign Labour will scrap it. Just guff from The Guardian on a day when the focus is elsewhere.

I’m not going to read the article but how can Johnson save the Tories when he’s not even an MP?

There's quite a lot in the link on the previous page

“it comes down to two questions: do you want the Conservatives or Labour to run the country, and who do you think has the best plan for the future.

“The truth of the matter is you’ve seen another tax cut in the Budget, while Labour are coming forward with more spending plans that will mean more taxes.

“We’ll also have got the Rwanda bill through, so that is where our strategic advantage lies – despite what the polls say.”

If this is what the Tories genuine strategy is then they really are clueless.

  5. If the last 24 hours has taught us anything it’s that the Tories will steal Labours economic plans them so those plans will be wrecked. So Labour should now not make any more of those plans public right up until an election campaign/manifesto launch, which means we’ll get a load not committals on what they’ll do now.

it would be nice if someone could be straight with the public....trouble is it gets a bit confusing....fiscal rules and obr forecasts etc

That’s because the public regularly miss-understand public finances due to the media/Tories. The public genuinely feel that the U.K. is running out of money when we aren’t so believe we have to ‘balance the books’ and that Labour are irresponsible with public money. Labour can’t be straight with the public because of that so they have to tiptoe around this to make the public believe they will be responsible.

I know it's a lovely attack line but I wish people would stop using it. I want the narrative changed away from "taxation is a bad thing".

Tax isn’t a bad thing at all but when the Tories try to claim they are cutting taxes it’s good to point out that they actually aren’t.

He really is attacking Labour on being big spender tax raisers...and then pretending to be fiscally responsible. What a c**t hunt is.

Typical Tories, always lying and blaming others.

well this is what will be argued. Will they reverse the spending cuts that government have effectively pencilled in with tax cuts in this and previous budgets, and if going to where is that money coming from if they're not going to put up taxes....economy is flat, debt is high, interest in repaying that debt is high, aging population, global instability.

I feel quite confident in saying that eventually (ie not straightaway) Labour will reverse cuts and spend more money on public services. It probably will mean tax rises when they get into power and they’ll eventually put their own fiscal rules in place. But they’ll want to do this in a way that doesn’t give the Tories/media any chance to claim they’re being irresponsible.

yes...I mean that is what I hope too. Interested to know what they say after this budget and during an election campaign, because currently there will need to be cuts...and Tories obviously think they can get Labour on this.

There doesn’t need to be cuts, the Tories are choosing to do implement more cuts. Besides Labour have already announced policies where they’ll have to spend money so to say that Labour won’t spend just isn’t correct.

yeah, but it's not something you should take by blind faith...if they're going to spend more they should promise it.

It's like people who blindly vote Tory because they believe they will always be sensible with the economy....

They’ve given me no reason to think they won’t. Besides Labour know that better public services to ensure they get a 2nd term and the way to do that is through increased spending. They have to say they’ll be sensible with public spending now because the public incorrectly think Britain has little money left and the media will jump on the chance to claim Labour are going to spend lots.

    except they're not.

They will do, it’s what a Labour government does. They just have to show the public that they will be sensible with the money first because the public miss-understand how economies work.

its labour who are promising to spend greater amounts on public services

In the budget tomorrow it’s very likely that the Tories will cut even more spending to public services just to fund their tax cuts which no one wants anyway.
