New At The Drive In (with a lyric video!!)

This is actually a lot better than I expected it to be. Would fucking love it if they played Glastonbury. A man can dream...

  2. I think this conversation, highlight's why the right wing populism are in a far stronger position currently. They have succeeded in highlighting the double standards of the left and instead of addressing these issues and tackling them head on, the left have gone for the tactic of mudslinging and counter accusation as a response; which fits further into the the right wing narrative currently being peddled that the left duck the issues therefore making claims such as "all muslims are potential terrorists" must be true without needing credible evidence.

Obviously this isn't the only reason for the expansion of far right populism but their control over the current narrative, particuarly on social media is a big one.

You don't show Trump as being a dick by being the same dick.

And this is spot on as it is self defeatist and frankly immature from the left

  3. 2016 has not been a year of gigs for me, due to the birth of my (perfect :) ) daughter, however I did see Massive Attack at the Clifton Downs and despite the apocalyptic weather it was an incredible almost cinematic experience.

(must say I am a little envious though of some of the gigs people have listed that they have gone to mind!)

not down as an exlusive are they? whereas Aphex Twin is, so there must be a pretty good chance (well, as much as them appearing at any other UK fest...)

Not seen any mention of Death Grips being an exclusive.... fingers crossed - would love to see them to be fair.

Anyone else think the car is a good place to get stuck into an album? I did about 6 hours of driving over the weekend and listened to Ok Computer in full a few times for the first time, it's amazing, airbag is some opener! There's something very enjoyable about driving alone at night with good tunes on the stereo.

    Agree 100%

Slightly off topic, but Smashing Pumpkins - Eye is one of my favourite night time driving songs.

I find it very therapeutic going for a drive with a load of music playing though. And as you say, Radiohead is excellent road music. Particularly songs like Street spirit in my opinion.

  6. Problem is - as many have said - he hasn't released anything decent in well over a decade, not since The Eminem Show I think

In many ways it is a shame because his word play and sardonic wit is sorely missed, in my view, now we're in a world of bland, middle of the road artists across all genres.

But he also has songs like New Slaves

Does Eminem have anything to balance out Rap God?

Fair point made, although I found the example of Rap God amusing when he has songs like Kill You and Kim in his back catalogue.

If Eminem performed like he did in the early 2000s i'd love it, but him stood on stage miming wouldn't do anything for me.

And although I do agree that for most adults the content of his lyrics are questionable - sexism, homophobia, murder fantasies in music didn't begin with Eminem and certainly won't end with him either, or Hip Hop for that matter.

  8. My Glastonbury dreams are always shit.

    Everything goes wrong!

Had one the other day, I won't go into too much detail as dreams are never coherent when you try to describe them to other people, but the dream involved missing 95% of the festival. Woke up still feeling absolutely gutted.

Luckily the three times i've been in reality i've had an amazing time, and I imagine I will do in 2017!

I also saw Boy Kill Boy somewhere in Sheffield (maybe The Leadmill). Less enjoyable. Oh the early 2000's, such mediocrity.

I saw Boy Kill Boy in Portsmouth - was given a cup of water by one the security at the cup and I for some reason thought it was a great idea to throw it on the stage - hit the lead singer square in the jaw. He didn't even flinch and I was promptly thrown out by some burly bouncer. Pretty much my only memory of that band, don't remember any of their songs.

And as Late of the Pier have been mentioned, does anyone remember Shy Child? They even played a Keytar!

We camped at Sziget for a full week, proper roughed it - and I'll admit that it did kill my insides! Great festival though, but I'd probably look to get an apartment if I went again - Budapest is a great city, and there's so much to do outside of the festival!

In 2016 we camped for the first time the full 10 days!! It's incredible! a 7 days pass is a must if you want a good (well decorated, not on the road, with some lights if possible) camping spot, adding 3 days before also helps you get the perfect spot, and you familiarize yourself with the location (not as big as glasto but it's big).

Sounds quality to be fair - def a strong contender for 2018 and by the sounds of it doing the full week is the way forward.

Plus i've never been to Budapest before so no excuse really!

  11. My other half somehow got in at 09:01 however it took three attempts at putting in card details in for it to actually go through - that was a tense 15 mins. The rest of us (5 others) got no where near and I personally never get anywhere on any of the years. If it wasn't for my Mrs i'd never go to Glastonbury haha - Knew she was a keeper ;)

we loved Sziget so much last year that we didn't even try for Glastonbury tickets this year.

I'm very tempted to do Sziget for the fallow year. Did you stay for the whole week? Or do people generally dip in and out - I'm pretty sure partying Monday to Sunday would absolutely kill your insides, but I do suffer terribly from FOMO(Fear of missing out) so I would be tempted by the whole week

The only thing to have come anywhere near close is the arctic monkeys with their first album, and that was nothing like the same. Beyonce is incomparable.

Agree with this 100% - No one really cares about Beyonce anymore than you'd care about buying a cheeseburger from McDonalds. I would include Marshall Mathers LP next to Arctic Monkeys in terms of impact in my yooth. Everyone I knew listened to both albums.

  14. But as others have alluded to, perhaps direct them to videos on youtube - particuarly the ones taken around the camp and in and around the festival - rather than just the bands. I obsess over those videos in the run up to Glastonbury! Get me in the mood so much.

Yoyo, haven't been on here in time, good to be back!! So our group this year all went to Boomtown, about 40 of us, it was absolutely banging. But I still don't think it is as good as Glastonbury. So I'm trying to get people to come, but obviously it is to understand how good Glastonbury is / how it is worth the dollar without having been. So far, I have 3 people on board. I have come for advice, how have you convinced people in the past?? How do I do it!?

40?! not sure if I even know that many people....

  16. Went to this. (Clifton downs that is) Very wet. Very windy. But sported a very trendy poncho and had a lot of beer and had an amazing time.

Thought savages and skepta were excellent. Third time i've seen primal scream and for me was their weakest set out of those three. Massive attack were incredible. Loved the cinematic feel of the set and the sound was some of the best i've heard at an outdoor gig. (Despite the sometime apocalyptic weather)

Only slight negative of it all was perhaps needed better organisation the bars? The queues got ridiculous as more people came in.

Don't think it was an issue of too many people as the main arena never felt overcrowded, maybe needed more than one entrance at each bar/more bar staff?

    Overall loved it though ☺

  17. Never listened to Maccabees - but saw them at Glastonbury 2015 after being dragged along and was actually quite impressed - but haven't listened to them since. And now they've spilt. I'm sure there's vague remnants of irony in that, either that or i've had too much beer.........
