  1. Most have been mentioned already Chilis 2007, AM 2009, Ian Brown 2009

But I'll throw in Blink 182 2010 - Horrifically out of tune, but the crowd atmosphere saved it somewhat.

At the Drive In 2012 - I remember all the hype about how amazing they were supposedly going to be, but they were probably the worst band I have ever seen. Just awful.

Primavera is like two crowds in one, particularly as of this year.

The party goers, mostly just there to hang with mates and for the big act at Mordor. Often disrespectful and drunk. Disproportionately British (or at least not local).

= the All Points East set’

And then a majority of the people in the auditori or watching a gig at a smaller stage or an afternoon or city show. Generally there primarily for the music and warm and respectful to the performer and to others.

= the Primavera crowd of almost all of the last two decades

Porto was like that this year too 😕 I haven't been for 6 years, but before you'd only get a small gathering of Brits who were there for the music. Hopefully it's just a post covid one off.

man, we got sick from one of the vendors ha. Really awful selection. I live in Portugal and was surprised at how lackluster/unhealthy it was.

Ah I'm sorry. Yeah it was either dry, plain or hard. I went to that Simpsons burger van and it was the dryest burger I've ever had!

Same experience here, people didn’t want me going up to the stage while it was still 30 minutes before the show and there was clearly still a lot of clear space up front. I just smiled and pushed through as gentle as I could and a few times someone grabbed my arm but I managed. And I don’t mean like pushing though a thick crowd, more that people were making an effort to wall up and actively tried to block people.

Still not the best crowd. Luckily a lot of nice Portuguese people attending too, had some nice conversations and some people asked me nicely to step to the side a bit (I’m quite tall) which is no problem if you ask politely.

Feels like the older crowd feels more entitled, like this is my space, I paid for a ticket and now this is mine. Well that said I’m 40 too 😊

I got a bit of stick for turning up late for Interpol, eventhough they were just talking anyway and not watching haha.

Seemed to be a lot more Brits this year, than there were in previous years we went, some of whom never even engaged during the sets. Hope it isn't turning into Barcelona Primavera, with people just going to show off on Instagram.

  5. Finally home and tired, only had 4 hours sleep last night due to early flight today.

I wasn't too enamoured with the line up originally, but ended up having a great time. Pavement were good, although they missed off a few of my favourites, so might have to go their shows. I'm sure they played Kennel District, but Spiral sang something else over it. But setlist said they didnt.

Not sure what was happening with Beck, the playback was pretty embarrassing and at one point the guitar "played" before he did lol. Still Lost Cause and One Foot in the Grave were amazing, and it was good to hear Novacane and Hotwax.

I'd say Dinosaur Jr were the best, followed by Jawbox. Little Simz, Kim Gordon, DIIV and Slowdive were great too.

I must have been lucky with sound, but I was at the front for every show.

Didn't like all that NFT and Crypto rubbish everywhere, although they're taking over everywhere these days.

They really need to ban rucksacks! Too many stood at the front with giant rucksacks or in the pit with rucksacks.

Not sure about next year yet, hopefully there will be some good bookings.

  6. 1. Arcade Fire 2010 - this is still the greatest live set I've ever seen! Watched it back on Youtube the other day, and still get goosebumps. Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels) may be the best song I've seen performed live.

    2. Smashing Pumpkins 2007 - haven't been as excited for a headline set, as them. It wasn't perfect, but it was the first time I saw them and I had waited years for the opportunity.

    3. The Cure 2012 - good setlist and a good band to see live and take in the moment.

    4. Radiohead 2009 - not a massive fan of theirs, but I still enjoyed it and they were the perfect festival closer.

    5. G N' R 2010 - they weren't as bad as they were made out to be. Axl was a mess, but the band were tight. It's not often you see a band with a back catalogue as good as that at a festival.

    6. MCR 2011 - don't like them, but there wasn't anything else I was interested in seeing that night. They were a lot better than I thought they'd be, Brian May coming out for the encore was the highlight.

    7. Blink 182 2010 - 40 year old men making fart jokes, but the atmosphere was amazing, which at least made it somewhat good. Several levels below Arcade Fire the previous night though.

    8. RHCP 2007 - left half way through, as I don't like them that much, but it was just dull.

    9. Arctic Monkeys 2009 - boring zzzzzzzzzz.

    10. Kings of Leon 2009 - dreadful, left to go and see Billy Talent in the Lock Up, so missed their little rant at the end.

Nos  Alive is famous to have great line ups  when Rock in Rio Lisbon is in the same year, and that will happen next year, so i a bet Nos Alive lineup will be greater than this year

I probably won't go next year, as I want to go to Porto for Pavement, but I'll try and save some money to go if the line up is great.

Like I said, I'm guessing they will merge with Field Day and improve the lineup.

But actually the whole thing is inevitably going to be underwhelming.

You can't take Primavera's acts and drop them into a warehouse in Zone 4 and expect to any way recreate the appeal of the main festival. It will always be a much poorer experience.

I don't disagree that there is an audience for an alternative/atp type of festival over here, but I suspect any London Primavera would be heavy on the Hip Hop, R'n'B and Pop spectrum they are currently focusing on. So it would just be another Lovebox/Wireless to an already overcrowded London festival scene really. Plus they won't recreate the atmosphere and weather and it won't stop Brits from travelling over, so it just seems pointless.

They are changing the headliners to  the supposed new trend and  the funny thing  once sold out  festivals  are now struggling to sell out a single day. Nos Primavera Sound last year sold out only the day with Nick Cave (the rock day) and this year none of the days sold out. Yet the day Solange was headliner was cringely empty, and don't say it was because of the weather, because last year the Nick Cave day the weather was like 100000X worse and it sold out....  SBSR was the first to change , and they are struggling for years....

You often hear the argument that they are just booking what is popular etc, but pop and rap have always been popular, without being all over festival line ups. I don't mind a few acts long as they fit the vibe, De La Soul, Jurassic 5 etc, but I don't want another festival catering to rap and pop fans and losing what made it great. There's so few festivals left now still catering to rock fans and NOS Alive is a bit of a Godsend in that regard.

  10. Got back to London about an hour ago. Feels like only 5 minutes ago we were going in to watch Weezer and now I'm sat on my sofa at home. The time sure went by fast. :( Hope everyone had a great time! Smashing Pumpkins were the best act for me, my mate said Thom Yorke was, obviously I didn't see him though.

Well that´s the future I guess, there are less and less rock oriented big bands like Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters that can sell out festivals, so they will turn themselves for other trends, other festivals here in Portugal did that, Super Bock used to bring bands like The Strokes, Metallica and a lot of metal stuff and this year they have Migos and Lana Del Rey, Primavera Sound Barcelona/Porto did the same, I think that Nos Alive will follow them, they´ll start with one hip hop, R&B or Pop headliner and then they will become a Coachella 2.0, but of course that will take time.

Next year I expect Nos Alive to have a far better and bigger lineup, they will have the competition from Rock In Rio that is held every 2 years and the Nos Alive´s lineup at even years is better, 2016 and 2018 were superb.

Yeah I get you, I just wish they could save a few festivals for the rock fans rather than having them all taken over by Hip Hop and R'n'B.

  12. Well the Smashing Pumpkins well and truly smashed it! Best act of the weekend! I was right on the barrier too, great to see them up close and a great crowd too.

I left Chemical Brothers early, just found it boring and they didn't play any songs I knew.

I saw a bit of Bon Iver, some was alright, but it was mostly quite dull.

  13. We're having a rest day today just to recover a bit and catch on some sleep, as not really bothered until the Pumpkins come on at half 11. I will have to stand through Boring Iver unfortunately, but worth it for SP. Unfortunately will miss RCBF, but not worth going all the way there early for one band.

So far seen Weezer, Mogwai, The Cure, Perry Farrell, Primal Scream, Johnny Marr, Great Van Fleet and Vampire Weekend.

Primal Scream so far for me were the best. Johnny Marr was packed, so couldn't get in, he easily had a bigger crowd than PS did, but the atmosphere was electric and looked like it would have been great to be in the crowd. GVF actually not too bad, the guitars were made to be heard in an open field. Perry Farrell's solo stuff wasn't that great, but I only really went to hear Jane's Addiction stuff.
