  1. Take our kids every year, 11, 10 and 7 this time. They love it and this year we didn't actually go in the Kids field...(I know, shameful) They love Greenpeace, Theatre areas, Avalon and Shangri-la during the day. We stayed over at the West camper van field this time and they loved Arcadia before it got busy. I would say, go for it, you don't have to be in the Kids field all day as the kids love loads of other areas too. So much for them to see and do everywhere. Helter Skelter in Avalon for example. Dodgems at the Pier this  year too.....oh, and all free....

  2. Rodney Branigan-one man two guitars was very good when he played at Glastonbury Extravaganza last year as a late appearance when Paloma was sick. He is well worth a watch.

  3. We take our 3, the youngest was 2 when she first went. Shes now 7. We take them to the SE corner but late afternoon, early evening when it's a bit quieter.

Also, cook breakfast as others have said and as there is so much good food, share main meals so they get to try lots of different things. Carry the stainless steel water bottles round to refill for free at the taps/water aid points.

Have a nap in the afternoon means they can stay up later.

Don't over pack as ours tend to wear the same things unless it's a really wet one (which it won't be)

  4. This is our first time in West, always stayed in CV East before. On the Tuesday after setting up we normally go for a walk off site. Does anyone know once you are in West, can you get in and out by foot? A pint in the Apple Tree Inn would be nice. ?

  5. After not getting glasto tickets this morning we are cheering ourselves up by looking for alternatives. Does anyone have experience of taking children to Boomtown or know if it is family friendly? I can see they have a kids field etc. but just thought people might have first hand experience.

  6. 4 beers 1 bottle of wine down so far.

Third bottle down (bubbly "wine") - split between us both.

    Sure it'll be fine (*cough*).

Might as well plan to do the ticket day as we would the festival

  7. Secret, am replying cos youve asked for peoples views but dont take offence! I think people have started taking bigger and bigger tents with children and I think it is over the top. We have a standard 2 room with porch in the middle sort of tent and that suits us fine. 7x7 for 5 of you is massive in cockmill.

My eldest is now 11 but at the age of 9-10 at shambala he was having his own popup( and carrying it) and we could therefore carry on using our family tent for us and the younger child.

We do take our 5m bell tent to festivals with more space so am not judging but I think youd be better off in wicket.

No offence taken GKS – I know honest feedback on here can be a tad ... sharp! Yours was no-where near as bad as I was expecting (tent sizes are a tad ... emotive!).

I’ll find a use for this tent outside of Glasto, so have no issues looking for something smaller on the used market.

I’m trying to get a feel for what is reasonable. I think a smaller tent is in order then, as well as looking at Big Ground as a fallback.

I don’t want to teach the children the idea that they can take a massive tent and stuff everyone else, if it isn’t reasonable. You need to compromise in life to get along.

Realistically, they are going to get in two or three weekends before Glasto, and that will be it for their camping experience. Maybe in a couple of years taking their own small tent is something to look at, but I think it might be a touch too much at the moment.

    Thanks for your feedback.

  8. You may want to consider the other Family field, in Wicket Ground?

Further from the Kids Field and Gate C, but fairly close to Gate A and importantly, fills up a lot slower and from what I understand generally tends to be a lot less crowded and more relaxed.

I know it's a bit lazy to say, but I've developed a taste for this side of the site. I've tried pretty much every general "area" apart from the West campervan field & the top West (Wicket funnily enough & around), and have settled on the East side really.

I'm also not too worried about atmosphere, as it will be both their first festival, Glastonbury in itself, and an early camping experience I think I could camp anywhere and it will be sensory overload! Might as well see if can be close to where I like!

  9. Thank you both for your feedback.

I'm not too worried about timing - the last time I camped in Kidney, you had to be "keen" to ensure a spot as well.

It's more of a "is it reasonable?" - the tent, that is. I wouldn't take it sans-children, as it would just be rude (in my opinion only of course - I'm not judging anyone who does take such a tent for themselves).

I *think* I'll be able to make Cockmills (of course, time will tell!) in time to get the tent there - but would that be fair to other users?

I'm curious as well - how small do people get their tents in the family field? The children are 2, 5 & 6 (& not that "camping experienced") - what would be reasonable, I wonder? I had just assumed that the field would be predominantly "larger" (than average) tents to be honest, so a big monster like this one would just be par for the course.

    Ta.

  10. Evening,

This year I shall have three under-ten children, for their first Glastonbury experience. I'm looking at camping at Cockmill. This will be my 7th time, in various locations, so I know the drill in terms of how quick the "preferred" areas of the site can fill etc. Of late, I've either camped in Kidney Mead or the campervan fields (East), so know the drill in terms of gate C etc.

My question is this: To those who have previous experience of Cockmill, what is the situation with tent size?

Due to the extra space needed, I've just taken collection of an Outwell Hartford XXL tent. Four separate "rooms" around a central area and an entry "porch". Only thing is - I've put it up for the first time, and it is huge! If I had tried to use this in Kidney I would have rightly expected to be roundly mocked by my immediate neighbours and beyond.

It is roughly 7 x 7 meters (in a sort of "star" shape).

    Thoughts?

Having children seems to eat up a lot of space, so I wasn't sure if the family field contained a greater than normal number of "large" tents?

    Ta.

  11. We ended up in Wally's Bar in Shangri La at one point before the barricades were put in place. Hadn't realised it was a staff bar until shortly before we left.

I took a snap of the beer lineup and they had:

    Hopback Summer Lightning (my choice)

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (as my other half is from California that's what she chose)

    Hopback Golden Best

    Butcombe Bitter

    & some daily specials

    For lagers they had:

    San Miguel

    & Kaltenburg Pilsner

It would be nice if they opened up that bar for punters as well for the whole festival and the staff running it certainly wouldn't mind from what they said to me. I noticed a lot of the bars in the late night areas only sold lager and cider, no ales. Sure you could find an ale eventually, but it was hard work.

How funny is that - we did the same (take a photo). This is us at (almost) 10pm Wednesday.

I thought last year the bar was open all weekend (someone might tell me I'm wrong, but it wasn't open for just the one night as it was this year). We spoke to someone on the Thursday who told us it was a licence issue this year, that it was open only on the Wed. on the back of the Diner bar, and the rest of the festival was a staff bar.

Rubbish news this year, as the bar had the best beer of the festival last year. This year: Summer Lightening + a number of changing guests, not to mention the cold NitroKeg Sierra which was bitterly cold and brilliant in the heat of the day.

This was great news to us on the Wednesday as we have got used to not many golden hoppy beers at Glasto. We even paced ourselves...with two of the guest beers and summer lightening every now and again. Big mistake...next day, we couldn't get in.

However it is Glastonbury, isn't it, so you don't just stop where you find a decent pint based on last year (it's not home) - you carry on going.

Of course, next year (assuming I get a ticket), I'll be straight there on the .... *cough*

Forget that. I won't be going there. Beer was rubbish. In fact, ignore this post. Don't go there at all.

  12. I like to watch the creative ways that people try to make money out of tickets (or other methods) of entry to the event. Each year, it gets more ... different.

Well, people are off early this year!

I don't understand though how it works - anyone know what he is selling exactly?
