    Hi guys,

First I hope I am writing this in the right place :)

I am quite new here and would like to come to the festival from abroad.

Since We are not a camper type, What are the staying options in the festival and how hard is it to get from those options to the festival location.

    Thanks

I stay at one of the premier inn’s in Derby from Thursday to Monday snd get tye shuttle bus from the back of the rail station too and from the festival every day. Shuttle is £25 for the weekend. Think others stay in Nottingham, Kegworth or other surrounding places but I’ve only stayed in Derby and don’t know what the transport options are from other places. Search Trivago for accommodation

Speaking as someone who lives a couple of miles from the festival, I'd say that staying in central Derby and catching the shuttle bus is probably your easiest and cheapest option.

Accommodation in and around Castle Donington will cost you an arm and a leg around the time of the festival.

There are buses that pass the festival site that go to Nottingham via Long Eaton but you could struggle to get back at night, as the buses are often full before they even reach the festival entrance (people walk to the airport to catch buses) and the queues for taxis at night can be horrendous.

There are also buses to Leicester and, I think, Kegworth from the airport - but you have to be prepared to walk to the airport, which is a couple of miles, I'd say.

It will be chilly down there in January

Yeah, that was my first reaction when I opened the email from Butlins about this festival yesterday.  October was definitely a more appealing time of year ;)

Will wait and see what first acts get announced, I think .....

  3. Milton Keynes Bowl 1990ish.  Bowie was supported by The Men They Couldn't Hang, Gene Loves Jesabel & Fields of the Nephilim, if I remember right.

It was a boiling hot day and there were massive queues for the water taps.

The view of the stage was okay during the support bands, cos everyone was sitting down.  When Bowie came on everyone stood up and moved forward, and we found ourselves behind a massive hump in the ground that made it impossible to see anything over the heads of the people in front, plus the crowd was rammed, so we couldn't move forward at all.

We ended up going to stand on a hump near the back of the bowl, where we could at least see the stage, although, at that distance, Bowie was just a tiny ant - which was hugely dissappointing!

Did I enjoy the show?  I can't honestly remember.  Although, it definitely wouldn't go down as one of the highlights of my gig-going experiences ......

  4. Well, it looks as though there may be no Rockaway Beach next year :(

Just went to Butlins website to see whether any acts had been announced for next year, only to find that Absolute 80s is listed for Bognor that weekend instead!?!?!  Just as I'd managed to persuade the other half to consider it for next year, as well ....

They only use two venues for bands - Centre Stage and Reds. Both are pretty big. Can't imagine they'd be many problems, even if the festival was sold out.

Yeah, it's the same at Skegness, with Reds being the bigger of the two venues.  Even so, the queue for The Stranglers started up outside Reds more than 2 hours before they were due to come on stage.  We heard that the crowd was packed in like sardines for The Rezillos!  The queue to get into Centre Stage to see The Damned was incredible - it wound all the way around the pavillion!  And I don't think the event was sold out this year.

Maybe the venues are bigger at Bognor?  Will definitely bear it in mind for next year ...

  6. I take it that there were no problems getting in to see any of the bands at Bognor then?  At Skegness the crowd got so large for at least 3 of the bands that there were long queues and people being let in on a strictly one out one in basis.  A similar situation occurred last year for the Buzzcocks and The Damned.  To tell the truth, it's put us off quite a lot - there's not a lot of point going to an event where you can't guarantee getting in to see some of the bands!  It's made us much more likely to consider Bognor for next year, in spite of the fact that it has to be twice the distance from us than Skegness is.

  7. I think that we would probably be interested in going to this if we weren't already booked up for The Great British Alternative at Skegness the same weekend.  This will be our 3rd and there's usually some crossover bands with Rockaway Beach.

From our experience at Skeg, I'd say that some of the people that you find on these weekends genuinely don't know what sort of bands are playing - the majority of these will be staying on the caravan site and will be taking advantage of whatever entertainment happens to be happening on site that weekend.

The Great British Alternative, by the way, is a pretty good weekend for people with a slightly punkier taste in music ...

You're joking. Never been myself but everyone keeps telling me it's 20 minutes. Gah!

The closest shop that sells alcohol is a small Spar, which is on the right hand side as you're walking down towards Castle Donington - maybe 30 to 40 minutes walk from the campsite.

  9. There are Skylink airport buses that go from both Nottingham and Derby city centres (and, I think, Leicester) and stop outside of Donington Park.  Not sure about the Derby buses, but the Nottingham ones run 24 hours a day, every 20 mins in the daytime, a couple of times an hour during the evening, and, I think, every hour at night.  Download's own shuttle buses, however, run from Derby station.

Depending on what you are looking for in the place that you stay, Nottingham is probably livelier, and has a greater choice of bars/places to stay, Derby, however, has some nice hotels (The Hallmark is right next to the station, but may be a little pricey during Download, if you are okay with walking, Jurys Inn is, maybe 20 mins walk from the station and I'd recommend it from personal experience) and, in my opinion, a much better selection of good, reasonably priced small restaurants.

  10. or - if you don't fancy walking all the way to the big coop - there's a small Spar a bit closer to the site (on the right hand side, as you're walking down towards Donington - had a good deal on spirits, if I remember rightly, the last time we were in there) or a smaller coop on Donington High Street (again, as you're walking away from the site, turn right when you come to the large former pub that is now a curry house serving food in the car park).

  11. Best of luck with it Paul.

Bush part I spoke of is on the engine side not attached to starter motor but into which it engages. Therefore changing the starter motor wouldn't have made any difference. On my engine it mainly happened when hot so prob not your solution but you never know.

    Hummmm .....

I've been watching this thread with interest, as I have a vw campervan with a starter problem.  We've tried all of the things mentioned above, and the van is a little better than it was, but not completely cured.

Finally, booked to take it into the garage Tuesday night, and I had a real job to get it started and keep it ticking over - lots of missing and spluttering.  The following morning the garage try the ignition and it starts first time without any problem! Typical!

Would the starter motor bush problem, by any chance, cause the van not to want to restart after it's been running for a while - for example, after having stopped to get some petrol?

  12. Sadly, it sounds like a strong possibility to me - like Slipknot, Iron Maiden have a tendency of reappearing on a regular basis at festivals like Download.  BMTH for Friday, I'd say, and Iron Maiden for Saturday.  Shame, cos I'd set my heart on SOAD and Sabbath, although Sabbath could get booked for Sunday, I suppose - let's hope so - that'd guarantee us buying a Sunday day ticket ......
