  1. Didn't only the top 2 teams get more PL points than Newcastle in 2022?

I know people point the the January spend, but the upturn in results happened before most of those players even arrived, let alone before Guimares played. The improvement of the team was noticeable before any signings.

Lots of promoted teams have a good first season where they finish 8th-13th on a low wage bill. Brentford have also had the benefit of Eriksen - who's ridiculously good. I'm not saying Frank's not done a very good job, but as TGT pointed out, it'd be doing it again that would be remarkable.

If Liverpool win the CL then there's a fair claim to Klopp being manager of the season, but surely not PL manager of the season?

On a similar note how Tyrone Mings gets in the England team ahead of Tomori is peak Premier league superiority complex. He's absolutely flourished under Maldini.

I'm not sure it's a superiority complex so much as laziness of scouting. Watching players in other leagues requires extra effort, and the media rarely push for it.

I kinda feel bad for relegating Burnley, given I'm aware for Newcastle's drops in 2009 and 2016 how miserable relegation is, and that I'm aware their Glazer-style leveraged buyout could make next season very difficult. But it is what it is alas.

11th from being 20th in December and being the last team to win in the Premier League this season is a pretty phenomenal turnaround.

Having seen the highlights, meanwhile, I wonder if there's any scenario where Norwich would've beaten Spurs to deny them a Champions League spot given how badly their defence collapsed.

I feel bad for Burnley, but I'm seriously happy for Leeds. I wanted Everton to go down because that club is just a clusterfuck of bad decisions over seasons, and they'd inevitably come back within 3 years anyway. Even with Bielsa gone though, Leeds are entertaining, and I want to see entertaining wild teams in the Prem. Burnley have been another of these 11th-18th teams that don't do much, and will probably be forgotten in 5 years.

From reading, Howe made good noises about not over-recruiting and trying to add to a good squad, which is a huge distance from what things looked and felt like in November. I'd much prefer to see 3-5 players signed and a 7th-10th finish than trying to overhaul everything. You don't want players who've done well the last 6 months to feel disposable.

Players just waste there careers at Chelsea and other top clubs, look at the likes of Moses and Loftus-Cheek. Loftus Cheek is 26 and what is he doing, should of left Chelsea at least 3 or 4 years ago and built his career.

Same with Dean Henderson at United, wasting his career and is already 25. I know goalkeepers have longer careers than outfield players but is wasting his career at united. Go elsewhere and build a career elsewhere, should of left 2 seasons ago when his stock was at his highest.

Absolutely. I know some players do actually get playtime there, but so many just waste a career. I hate the hoarding of talent only to leave it festering.

The Liverpool model (whatever that is) has been quite unique. Who would've thought a failure at Chelsea and a decent Roma player would've turned into Messi?

Mane? Good player for the Saints. Again...

    Firminho, Henderson and even Milner.

Salah only really failed at Chelski because of how they function. Sign any hyped 21 year old, play them 10 times, then if they don't set it alight loan them out and sell them on at break-even/profit. Same happened with De Bruyne.

How do our Newcastle fans feel about this?

Firstly, the daily mail whipping up racism and talking bullshit isn't anything new.

Secondly, as charlierc said, white is a stupid away colour choice for a team that plays in B+W by default.

Mostly, I think it's a non-story. I suspect Saudi football supporters would be following the club anyway, or at least the ones who don't have a prob with their gov, and I don't think a change kit colour choice is going to affect that. Similarly, anyone who boycotts it because of this link, would probably have boycotted the club anyway.

Vague, fairly meaningless associations and links are going to do nothing. Most people have decided to either continue supporting the club, to boycott the club despite not having been a fan before, or to barely care apart from a bit of whining about another club.

I don't delude myself into thinking that many other lifelong Newcastle fans are going to not fund the club because of the Saudi ownership like I am. I also don't think that things like this matter to the vast majority of football fans. Away kits get mocked for billions of reasons, but I think most fans really don't care about what another club's away kit is or what reason they have it.

It's a nothing story, and its existence and links have more to do with Daily Fail racism than anything football fans pay attention to.

Maybe a keeper as well? Henderson?

I rate Dubravka, question is what the target is next season. I'd have thought the aim should be top half, but if it's trying to get a Europa League spot, then maybe.

How do you think Newcastle will go in the summer mate? Spend big on big players, or build slowly?

Personally, and I could well be wrong, is that I think there'll be one fairly big signing and a bunch of squad improvements. A high-profile forward, a respectable LB, and a respectable CB signing seems likely.

The team does certainly seem more together as a unit. I know some mock our habit of taking squad photos after every win for the Gram but there's very much a team togetherness in willing to do that and I don't think we got that kind of feeling under the previous administration.

It's incredibly mock-able habit. Main thing is when these cheesy things work no-one gives a shit.

who's gonna be the superstar signing for mega rich newc?

Not sure there's going to be a superstar signing. To make the obvious comparison to City, maybe a Robinho or some other high-rep young striker, but I'm not sure the club can attract them yet, certainly not an equivalent of Aguero. Still a few seasons away, but at least there's the spine of a team in now.

Having an actual midfield in place instead of a 2nd line of bad defenders is a nice change.

  11. Key changes I've noticed under Howe vs Cabbage Face:

    There's 11 players playing for 95 minutes, not 7 players for 75.

The ball moves forward with passes not hoofing.

When the personnel changes, the off-the-ball defensive shape doesn't. It's resilient and solid regardless.

When the personnel changes, the on-the-ball attacking shape does. It's fluid and penetrative.

Hades is still my go to "got a spare half hour" game, I can do a full run through in that time. Must have finished 50+ runs now but the story keeps evolving.

    It's an all time great.

Yeah, absolutely. I've only succeeded at about 7 or 8 runs, but just keep finding more nice little bits. Really nice level of challenge with both the meta-progress making each run technically easier(mostly), and the Pact of Punishment letting you up the difficulty again slowly.

  13. I'm now fully on the Hades bandwagon (albeit typically late). So much my type of game. Riffs off mythology, has its own story, rewards repeat plays while mastering a style and having variation.

Main other thing I've been playing is Octopath Traveller. Just a very nice JPRG.

Lee Hughes still ended up having a career in the lower leagues. Shame on the clubs that employed him.

The Greenwood stuff is horrible. It’s been taken down now but yesterday the Mail had a story about her dad claiming her IG account was hacked and how she never wanted these images shared etc.

Lee Hughes was a hugely different situation though? Dangerous (drink?) driving is idiotic and he deserved his sentence, but it's not the same issue of morality.

More like a 4-1 or 3-1 loss now if we're lucky. Just can't see us being able to take 20 wickets consistently with such a conservative approach. Granted the Archer injury is an absolute bastard, but with Stokes in the squad there will be much more need for Mahmood or even Carse than for Woakes. At least going in with 5 bowlers per match might relieve the pressure on Wood and not having to have him bowl 20 overs in a day.

I don't think we can win the urn, as you said, can't see us taking 20 wickets consistently, but between it making a spinner more pickable, and strengthening the batting and fielding, I think we stand a chance of taking 2 tests. I feel like the pink ball in Adelaide, if we can hold our own batting-wise, then Anderson/Broad/Robinson/Woakes/Stokes or some combination of them + Leach can take 20 wickets even with Wood rested, then it's just hoping that Wood (+Mahmood if he gets promoted mid-series), can bring enough heat in one game to nick another.

It's a fragile Aussie team, with little match practice behind them, I don't think it'll be as bad as the last 2 times.

I do feel sorry for Woakes though, over the last 18 months he must have thought there's been chances to stake his spot as a premier all-rounder and he has to isolate/get injured/etc. almost every time Stokes is unavailable.

  16. Stokes going to the Ashes. I think that means a 3-2 loss in now achievable? Can't see us winning it without Archer/Stone/Mahmood unless Wood manages to get through all 5 games in great form, but I think Robinson will do well there, and it makes it easier to play Leach/Parkinson.

As Newcastle fans advocate so strongly the importance of managerial win percentage in ranking managers, they will be ecstatic that the perfect candidate may be available tomorrow!

If the swap happened I'd be fine with that, and find it very funny.

    And I don't rate OGS.

You might but the point here is someone else doesn't which is why the racism complaint has been made. Someone thinks a Saudi man in London may suffer a racist attack if we point out chopping up a journalist into little pieces with a bone saw is wrong.

Its just part of their culture we don't understand.

Yes, but you brought up his Burja comments as an equivalent example, when I think this complaint is much more ridiculous than any about Bojo.

Hmm don't really get that argument. Are we saying Boris can never criticise Israel foreign policy because he has "form" and so its going to encourage antisemitism?

Of course we know there are people who go too far and cross that line but I don't think it should mean Israel foreign policy is off limits especially for a British PM who should be supporting the idea of western liberal democracies. I'd much rather people learn to differentiate between race and culture.

Who do you trust more to make a nuanced argument, someone with no track record, or someone who's referred to "picanninnies with watermelon smiles"?

I trust the average football fan more to understand the difference between race and culture and to react appropriately than I do Bojo. He has repeatedly shown a lack of respect or consideration for tolerance, and has worked closely with white supremacists.

I never said anything like foreign policy should be off limits btw, but it does make it more difficult.

Agreed, knowing his love for the Saudis it may have been him who complained. However the point stands if Newcastle fans are upset about this banner, the sportswashing has worked.

Well, it means it'd worked in the context of those fans.
