  1. HELLO!!!

OK, so....after discussion, me and the wife have bought 2 tickets for this. On our 'travelling' honeymoon 2 years ago, Barcelona was our favourite city visited.

After then doing a google search & looking at other forums about the festival, i am both excited and confused. So im hoping the good folks here may be able to help.

OK. So....there appears to be 'stuff' happening the tuesday & wednesday before AND the sunday after the festival 'proper', right? Are these ticketed or does our festival pass thingy mean we can see these things too? Apparently, the acts on at the auditorium needs 'reservations'. Is this a major hassle? Or can you role up, like, 15 minutes before (Obviously, if its a MAJOR must see act, id assume you need to be there ASAP. Im talking about the 'festival fodder' type acts). I already know that Barcelona itself is VERY reasonable (I.E. cheap) for food & alcohol, but is the 'festival tax' excessuve like here in blighty? (IE a £3 pint in a pub here being about a fiver at a 'major' festival).

And....thats it really, at the moment. We have booked our hotel (Vincci Bit. 10 mins away from the 'site'. Any comments on this hotel ALSO greatly appreciated.) and cannot wait.

Any other info (to get the excitement flowing) would also be more than agreeable.

    Cheers. :)

  2. After reading some of the reviews fellow roaders have posted, i am a little lost. I realise it were only my first EOTR, so i haven't that 'emotional' attachment with watching it grow etc. But, i have to says.....dudes......chill out. EOTR was THE best thing by far this year! IT may not be 'as good' as it was (which only makes me wish i got my act together and gone before), but it was bloody lovely!!!!

As everyone else does, i will now start with a list.

    Positives :

SIgur Ros. They were, quite frankly, fucking amazing! When i saw they were playing for 2 hours, even i thought, as a fan, that it would lose momentum and have a 'festival' crowd muttering & dis-satisfied. I was wrong. They could have played for much longer. The visuals (well, the ones i saw. When my eyes wern't closed. getting lost in the music. I am an effing cliche) were stunning, the music was stunning, the crowd (where i was) were reverential....THE best headlining set i have ever seen. I kept saying to my friends after that all music & festivals might as well stop now and that nothing can EVER top that. But i DID have maybe 1 or 2 bad glasses of wine.....

People. The average asshole/decent quota at festivals is usually 4 decent to 1 arsehole, i find. Obviously, this quota varies as to what festival you are at (reading probably 2/1 etc). But, at EOTR, it must have been 500 to 1 or something. Maybe i was just lucky (BTW, i have almost zero 'chatters' when watching bands. A couple at PSB, but that is it...), but EVERYONE was nice & happy & friendly. EOTR has a rep of being quite middle class, and some peeps say the friendliness is coz of this. I say bollocks to that. Nice people are nice people. Im nice (i think). Im working class. So, well done all of you. :)

The setting : My word, its a lovely looking place, isnt it? But, i guess, you know all this already.

The food options. All good, not TOO pricey, and tasty. I am now on a diet, but it was an epic gastronomical blowout.

Public Service Broadcasting. They are turning into an AMAZING live proposition.

Efterklang. Only went to see them coz i didnt wanna see David Byrne. What a revelation. Utterly amazing. Tindersticks with electronical noodling. Amazing.

Pappys. Bloody brilliant, as ever, Deserved a bigger & more appreciative crowd for their sketches. Even if there WAS a bit of hate for Sigur Ros....

Now i should do negatives. But please bear in mind these are only VERY minor grumblings, which on the whole, do not mean much. And should not detract from what a brill i & the wife had. Ok? good...

    Negatives :

Line up. To be honest, it might just have been me and the things i chose to see. But, to be honest, the things we saw before about half 4 was either mildly diverting or dull or just rubbish (the sound of a saw being played is not, has not and will not ever be a good sound). And after that time, there seemed to be clashes galore......

Glass. The security was VERY discreet. Which is nice, obviously. But, all the glass everywhere is not good. There has been some peeps here saying that some people didnt even know about the no glass rule. Well, if that IS the case (which i doubt a little. Its on the tickets, on the website etc....but i digress), it just needs a sign at the enterance and a couple of 'security' there asking if there is anything in glass. simple.

Comedy Line Up. This is a little misleading. The line up was great. And i LOVE the location of the stage (despite the lack of wheelchair & pushchair access...). My problem is, why does it end at 6? Seems odd...maybe after 6, have the literary stuff on the same stage, and continue comedy stuff at 10ish? I know, at around that time on the sunday, getting mildly irritated at Belle & Sebastian's tweeness & Dinosaur Jr's grungy guitar workouts, i would have LOVED to have another option......

The Woods Stage. I agree with some comments about, in such a lovely setting, that this stage did seem a little plain & dull. Course, its a space issue. And i don't have any real suggestions to improve it.

and thats it really. I do not believe in getting early bird tickets for anything (what if the organisers of ANY festie decide to radically change the line up. Killers/Beyonce at EOTR?!? URGH!!!!!). BUT, i can almost GUARANTEE that we will be back again. Hopefully with a 'combo' ticket with No Direction Home (Fingers Crossed)

  3. Hello.

Experienced festival goer of 18 years. But 1st time at End Of The Road. Starting to get quite excited. :)

My question relates to alcohol. I do not see anywhere that home-brought booze is not allowed in the 'arena' area. IS this the case?!? I mean, im not planning on getting poo-faced (im 37). But, yer know, a wee dram of vodka from a hipflask could be nice of an evening.

ALSO, are beer/cider/bar prices as reasonable as the website says?!? £3 a pint?!? At a festival?!? Surely not?!?

    Do tell. Thanks. :)

  4. I like camping anyway and festivals just wouldn't be the same without it. All the people I am going with want to camp in the 'quiet' section this year and I'm not too happy about that. Surely that's tantamount to admitting that you're old?!?
  5. Yeah, except I saw Imelda May at the Y in May(?) and I've never seen the Lightning Seeds. What will probably happen is I'll go to the Muso stage and it'll be rammed so I'll slink off to see the Seeds.

As to the other, I'm afraid that as a woman of a certain vintage my interest in the Beat is mostly to do with perving over Ranking Junior. (Though that aside they were really really good at Wychwood).

  6. You'll love Latitude - nice sized festival, with a pretty friendly crowd. In answer to some of your questions:

    1) The bars open in the evening - it's a good day to get a feel for the site and have a couple of drinks outside if the weather is nice. However, with the introduction of comedy etc, maybe there will be something extra going on this year.

    2) There is at least one of the 'general supply stores' You'll have seen them at other festivals yellow sign, sell everything at a bit of a mark up. However, the food stalls are pretty special too - you won't be going hungry.

    3) There aren't real designated areas or zones, most of the late night partying is best done by the large communal bonfire (not near the campsite) so you shouldn't be kept awake too much (however, you never know who will pitch up next to you.

4)The bar near the courtyard used to have a good range of spirits, i'm sure I saw Sailor Jerry's last year. If you have managed to smuggle drink into the arena at Latitude, then you shouldn't have a problem with Greenman. I found security getting into the arena pretty stringent (still managed though). Greenman is more relaxed (although not condoned, and don't take glass bottles etc)

The last two years have been rainy and muddy. The hill going back from the main ampitheatre has a carpeted path as well as stone steps, however the worst part was coming up to the entrance. Worth taking some decent boots or wellies.

    Have a good one!!

  7. I was REALLY looking forward to Danananananananananananananananakroid! And i think wild beasts are ok......in an ok way.......just not......great. yr know?

Anyways, ive only just noticed the map for the new site. Its all moved around! I dont like where the rising tent is....

Listen to me!!! You can tell im an old bloke! (I FEAR CHANGE!!!) It still isnt miles away.....*tsk*

  8. Hello!!!

This is gonna be our (me & my special ladyfriend) 1st Green Man. And we are REALLY looking forward to it. Especially my ladyfriend. After getting fed up with being treated as cattle in a slaughter house at V and Reading, we are really enjoying the smaller 'boutique' festies. We LOVE Latitude. And dig summer sundae (mainly coz its so cheap!).

BUT....as this is our 1st, I/We would like some advice from experienced Green Man-ers....

    So.....

1/ Is there anything to do on the thursday night? OR is it just Bars open & get merry? Should we take a book?

2/ Will we need to take food supplies (eggs, rolls, pot noodle etc) or is there a shop on site which will sell these (im not bothered about the price too much. I understand the need for 'festival tax')

3/ Where is the best place to camp? We arnt party animals, and would like a bit of sleep. BUT......we aint quiet either. We may get a little 'merry' at times and make a little too much noise. And, obviously, dont wanna offend or annoy. We are nice Guardian reader types ;p

4/ Whats the choices of spirits at the bars? My ladyfriend, bless her, is very fussy. So...is it the bog standard vodka and....thats it? Or will there be Bacardi/Pimms/a dark rum? Also, im assuming (officially) we cant take our own booze into the 'arena'. BUT.....how easy is it to sneek it in? (At latitude it were so bloody easy....)

5/ Is there any way whatsoever i could get away with not taking my wellies. Yer see, it absolutely tipped down a few times at Latitude (it were almost biblical a few times. VERY impressive). But the ground were fine!

thats it really...we aint festie virgins (My first was reading 95. yes, i am an old man). Just need a few pointers. Any other tips would be appreciated greatly. ta muchly. See you down the front for Grizzly Bear. AND The Phantom Band. And Errors. AND Peggy Sue. AND Josie Long.

  9. So, im the only one 'ere who liked Jose Gonzalez too....ho hum...

Anyways, this is our 4th in a row. And, whilst i am looking forward to it immensly, i DO think the line up this year is quite weak.....still, at least its cheap. And i get to see the majestic Mum. AND My Latest Novel. And Joy Formidable.
