Gotta confess that The Cardiacs had/have completely passed me by. Like, completely.

Given the love popping up I feel like I need to rectify that.

Check out Sing To God.  Not the "classic" lineup but a seriously fucking incredible album.

Comparable to Beefheart in a way, they take a bit of listening to for lots of people.

There isn't a word to describe how bad this is.

Tim was the most amazing person.  The word genius gets bandied about a lot, but he truly was.

Super friendly, super supportive, all round good egg. Greatest moment of my musical career -if you could call it that- was Tim watching us from the side of the stage, buying us a round after and chewing the fat all night long.

Greenpeace tent gigs were a Glastonbury highlight, the only must-see of any year they played. Every show they did was a soaring wonderful occasion.

If all the people who have decided in the last 24 hours that Cardiacs were their favourite band ever had bought the records, they'd have been multi-platinum megastars.

Truly heaven born and ever bright and worthy of laudation!

  3. I think something's going to happen, but not before the end of the weekend.  If they start putting acts on tomorrow the site [and roads] will be rammed with people heading down.  Or maybe telly needs loads of people and tipis.

  4. I had to split... my phone's not been the same since that tussle with the police in Shanghai.

    Lovely to meet you all!

Anybody thinking of joining, but a bit nervy... do it!

Sun's on it's way up here!

    Big love from Tokyo x

Ah I miss Tokyo. Was there in the fallow year. Car vending machines, covering tattoos for onsen, umbrella parks, underground car network, hot and cold coffee cans, hot face cloths in restaurants, restaurants that only serve one type of food, shared toilet shoes that are not big enough for Gaijin, hotel pajamas etc etc.

All of that and more right?  Loving it here!

Come back over and we'll tear up the town yeah?

thats some effort ... :)  even better if you manage it twice ..... where are you logging in from ?

Tokyo, got the hell out of China!

Should have been on a plane last night marking exams before depositing them in a lockup and forgetting about them  for 5 days!

  7. In January I was on CCTV 1* evening news for being the outstanding foreigner in the province of 70 million people... doesn't speak well for the quality of laowai in China, right?

*the Chinese tele channel, although I'm sure there are plenty of expolits on CCTV in all sorts of places

This one didn't appear in any newspapers or online but Mick Jagger's brother got pink-eye because of me. He was a massive knob and totally deserved it!

  8. Good morning from China, where things are finally easing [in my province anyway].  Still no idea about a return to work, but my favourite bar opened today and it was nice to sit out in the sun and enjoy a drink.

I know it isreally difficult under lockdown wherever you are, possibly more so than it has been here, because here the lockdown -although unexpected- was totally feasible and a very Chinese solution to the problem. Living in a one-party totalitarian state.... well... you know...

It is very strange watching the pandemic from a distance after being in the heart of it for so long, and I know it must be really tough. As I said before, I’m an infrequent poster but avid reader of these forums, they have really helped loads.  Here are some other strategies I found useful for coping with lockdown:

Underpants housework/furniture re-arranging to loud music: KLF’s White Room is a good upbeat choice for hoovering and mopping, Dub is great for tidying and dusting [windows and curtains open help to entertain neighbours and boost community morale]

Sort all the crap you have and see what you can make out of it, the more useless the better.  I’ve made the world’s wonkiest cat house from unwanted books and a device for smoking 24 cigarettes at one time from an old felt-tip pen box.

Think up anagrams of your own name, start a Twitter account and see how long you can annoy friends and family before they realise it is you.  They are stupider than you think!

Learn how to make dumpling dough/pasta and use all the leftover bits from your cupboards to make bizarre fillings. Ham, chive and mustard was a winner.

Get a good VPN and download everything you’ve ever wanted [320gb and counting here]

Chat as much as you need to, support everyone, but also enjoy a bit of selfish ‘me time’; opportunities for self-indulgent laziness should be made use of.

    Take care and stay cool

    Best

  9. @eFestivalsWere you at the legendary Mare's  Nest vdeo gig?  What a day that was.

My big flower shirt from back then is still just about hanging on, only worn on very special occasions now.

Favourite Cariacs memory?  Mine was seeing Steve Davis down the front at the Astoria, didn't know at the time he was actually 'interesting'!

  10. On land and in the sea by Cardiacs.

Cheating a bit because it's a favourite, but it is also a classic. Tim's songwriting and the influence the band had are pretty important, even if they never really hit mainstream consciousness.  Bit of a marmite band.

Classic lineup, slightly easier to get into for normal [non Cardiacs fans] folk than some other albums, and absolutely belting from start to finish.

Miss you Tim, we still need you!
