  1. But if you're not gonna be there till Thursday why does it matter?

We always get them, its noce to have the Thursday just to chill rather than deal with travelling set up etc. But if we had time/money to do more festivals I doubt we would do it for all that we went to. as this is the only one, its nice to make a bit more of it.

  2. Hey,

I agree, its dead easy to move between stages, as long as you account for the crowds!

There is often a camp loner thread on here (or possibly on the official forums, I get cionfused!) for folk who are on their own.

I guess the choice of campsite really depends on what you want more than being on your own, but I guess the ones a bit further from the arena might be a bit quieter, possibly friendlier so you can meet people to keep an eye on your tent etc...

  3. Being a bit of an old lady these days I don't tend to head to the front much, especially not for the bigger bands - I like to be able to wander down and then leave if I please! So can't really comment on some of the more reent stuff, but I'd imagine that its got better as 'barrier technology' has improved.

Worst I have been in was between System and Metallica in 03, menatl reverse crush, we were rammed against the front of the sound tower! And the front of Alien Ant Farm (03 or 04?) in the tent first gig back after his accident. Was really early but tent was full - absolutely mental and full of dicks waiting for smooth criminal!

  5. Hmm, for me it would have to be:

All of the Foos last year!

Green Day trashing their kit and setting fire to it having refused to stop playing in 2001

All of The Streets in 2011

    Brian May with MCR

GD secret gig - hardly saw any of it, but the atmosphere was brilliant

Crowd surfing during Ash in 2002 (I am not a crowd surfing kind of gal, but that was awesome)

I'm sure there must have been many many more moments in my 12 years of going, but can't think of the right now!

The reverse crush between system and Metallica in '03 (I think) was insane! legendary but not in a good way!

  6. I didn't enjoy the atmosphere. I just felt uncomfortable. I really resented being made to feel uncomfortable for actually liking and enjoying the muis con display. Didn't enjoy being started on, and being covered in piss during The Cure. Didn't enjoy having a couple barge past me at the barrier and just ram each others tongues down their throats right in my face, while their friends covered each other in neon and talked over Mark Lanegan. Didn't enjoy being being kicked in the head by two people during the black keys... just because they thought it was funny. Also didn't like that people were rummaging through my backpack during The Cure. or the guys who broke my new tent while I was sleeping in it. For some reason they were kicking it in the night... stole the pegs and kicked in the poles until one snapped. I just really don't think it's a pleasant place anymore, especially for people who just go for music and not to fucking shit up. I just like audiences who are there for music, and to have fun.

  7. Usually I'm pretty laid back about increasing prices, reductions/changes to services on offer etc. Even let them off for the fiasco that was the boat river crossing int he first year there was parking across teh river.

But very p'd off about the lack of boat to white! It was well used too. Does it really cost that much money? could they not just do a service morning and evening if they need to cut it somehow?

TBH I'd even pay a quid a trip or even 2 to get the boat!

Grrrrrr! also upset as site map day is usually really exciting, but just aggravating this year. As well as the mental location of the sole 2 breakfast stands!

  8. We have camped in white for a few years now. Whilst there certainly isn't the late night rowdyness of other campsites over the river, there certainly is no rule about noise, or curfews or anything - if there was we wouldn't have been kept awake for 3 nights by a bunch of welsh chaps yelling about budgie smugglers! (only saved by them loosing their voices!). Generally it is quieter and great for getting a decent amount of sleep.

I don't recall there ever being that many kids ither. And it is delightfully close to the car park!

It is a bit of a pain for getting to the arena, but we tend to go in and then stay there for the day, so its not too bad, and very civilied if you go and get the boat down and walk in from the green landing site.

Think we were in what is now purple when it was brown for years, till it got way too crowded and mental (and a bit nasty one year!) and then they put th bridge and boat to green in from white and we were sorted again!

All depends on what you want from the weekend tho I guess.

  9. I think I know what you mean - in the last few years (and yes this might also be associated with me getting older!) there has been alot more 'trendy' types. It has become mroe and more fasionable to go to festivals, and R&L have been among the best for a younger more mainstream crowd as they are in the school/college sumemr holidays.

I think a case in point of this is that all the high street fashion shops now have 'festival' sections/ranges, the mainstream fashion magasines talk about festival fashion.

When I started going in 2001 the only mags that would have mentioned Reading and Leeds and other rock festivals would have been the music mags.

It seems to be for some alot more about a party than the music, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but does mean you don't always get the enthusiatic crowds.

I do hope that the slower sales this year is showing a turning tide in fashion and the music festivals can again be the domain of music fans (of any age) and the twats can stay away and burn shit in a field elsewhere!!

  10. Getting a Hotel at Reading is the best decision I've ever made, after 04, we've hoteled every year, it makes the experience so much more fun these days! A nice lie in, bit of telly, shower, quick lunch from Pret or similar, grab a beer for the walk and head on in (Im 34)

The walk back to the town is shorter than to White too!

  11. Yay, I like the positivity!

I am looking forward to the first year in ages where its actually properly warm.

And the first year for ages where we don't get soaked putting the tents up.

And Offspring, Muse, King Blues, Streets... oh and too many to list bands, playing while we chill in the sun!

  12. Hey,

I know what you mean about lugging tents and stuff, and not showering before the trip back, but there is no way I wouldn't camp at a festival.

To make it more comfortable we now lug camping beds and camp in white to get enough quiet for a reasonable nights sleep too. We are trying to save money and go on the bus this year so travelling with al the stuff will be even more of a pain. And will still be getting the train back unshowered. Its fine for a few stops out of Reading, but byt he time we've passed Birmingham there are so few festi goers left you stand out a bit more, but I've never let it bother me!

I know what you mean about it being a bit wierd camping with just a couple of you, but there are plenty of folk on here who arrange to meet up with others to get a better camp feel.

We've adopted lonely campers in the past too!

  13. Thanks guys, but the issue isn't whether they will have a luggage hold, which it almost certainly will, but the fact that we will blatantly have more than 2 standard size suitcases, they will be large rucksacks with camping chair, bed and sleeping bag attached, plus a 4 man tent.... hence our concern, and wondering whether anyone else had had any bother on megabus or had seen anyone else having bother.

    Cheers

  14. My Reading tickets were delivered by DX, and the email I got said that if it was deemed secure enough to post the tickets without a signature then they would do that - they were just posted into the post box for our flat. Again didn't even ring.

would seem to me stupid for a delivery guy to 'fake' a signature for delivery in order to steal the tickets (assuming that this is what has happened in your case) when the could just claim they posted them with no signature.

Sorry I can't help more - I have often found ticket agents etc singularly unhelpful once the tickets have left them - like its not their problem anymore!

  15. As this will be my 10th Reading, I would like to add:

    Be nice to each other!

Everything is so much more fun if everyone gets along - why be aggro about stuff? just chill and have a laugh.

Its rare that people are actually out to 'get at' you, so be nice.

Oh and don't burn other people's stuff.

And if you can avoid it don't burn too much of your own, its a total waste and the smoke is NASTY!

    Don't sit in a fire

Don't take drugs for the first time, unless you have REALLY good friends who will look after you if it all gets messy

    Don't pee on my tent

    Wear sunscreen
