Think we need less chairs around not more….

I understand that one effective way of clearing a lot of the chairs and picnic blankets away from in front of the stage is to put on a set by Nuha Ruby Ra, which apparently worked at Green Man.  Not sure it would at EOTR though.

  2. The Good:  Pretty much everything apart from:

The Bad:  Every year the decent beer tent underestimates the amount of stout and porter they need, with this year being the worst I can remember with only one stout very infrequently available.

The Ugly: Wasps that don't seem to understand plain english and don't f*ck off when told to do so.

And while I'm here, I didn't specifically mention under 'good' the sound quality on every stage I went to. I've done 5 fests this year (Black Deer, 2k Trees, Truck, GM, EOTR) and EOTR is the only one that had great sound for every act I saw (mainly from the barrier) and no irritating sound bleed from other stages.  Admittedly I didn't see anything on the Piano Stage this year, which does suffer sound bleed, nor did I go to Talking Heads, but it's all been great down there in previous years.  Sound quality is one thing that makes EOTR stand out, and something which should never be part of cost saving, which I understand it has been for at least 2 of the aforementioned fests.

    I was wrong! http://web.archive.org/web/20060407135206/http://www.endoftheroadfestival.com/wishlist.html

From a quick look through, these are potential 2024 headliners who have never played: Beck, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Arcade Fire, ANONHI and the Johnsons, Black Keys, The National, Sleater-Kinney, Four Tet, LCD Soundsystem, Regina Spektor

Well for me personally, please not The Black Keys who did the worst headline set I've ever seen (at Latitude).  And would be interesting to look who has headlined the G

Garden Stage or sub-headed Woods previously and could now be ready to step up as Future Islands did this year.

  4. So here's a summary of Top 10s to date with 86 different acts featuring.

Personally I'm a little surprised how low Ezra is in the list.  I wonder how many would now include Crack Cloud, who hadn't been announced when most of us posted - certainly they would now be in my Top 10.  Also noted that this year's Wet Leg (aka The Last Dinner Party) hasn't got much traction with us.

  5. When first announced, I was somewhat underwhelmed by the line-up.  However with the last additions, and having given a quick listen to everything, I’m now worried about how many clashes I’m going to have.  An initial top 10, no doubt subject to change as I listen more and see some of these acts between now and end-August.

A propos of nothing, Black Deer's latest line-up announcements today makes it look like a composite of EOTR rosters from 2008-2011: pretty stellar in my view, and happy to have a ticket in my back pocket!

Yes, here also with a ticket and super-happy with yesterday's announcement, which really lit up my day.  Here's hoping that the next EOTR line-up announcement does similar.

Would also echo on reflection that this is incomplete as there's no African acts, although I wonder if some might tread lightly around them given how many pulled out of UK visits over visas last year.

Although not BCUC, Orchestra Baobab and Mdou Moctar who were 3 of my absolute highlights last year.

  8. Would be good to get a few of the bands that I've seen and enjoyed in the last 12 months or so, and who haven't (I think!) already played at EOTR:

Sprints, Melts, Scattered Ashes, Enola Gay, Bullet Girl, Youth Sector, Opus Kink, Hallan, Deadletter, Lemondaze, The Lounge Society, Egyptian Blue, Mandrake Handshake, Cheap Teeth, Crows, Vlure, Fake Turins, Personal Trainer, Winter Gardens, Ditz.

On the Gazebo side.....I do think maybe, if you are in settlers, and with the 'unique' weather Green Man sometimes gets, A gazebo is a good thing to have, and I wouldnt begrudge peeps having them.

Other campers, well....its a few days, with so much to do. You dont need them.

This is pretty much what I said in my response to the GM questionnaire.  I do Settlers with a 4/5 friends, and take a gazebo, which becomes our community centre.  I do 3/4 other weekend camping festivals during the year, but don't take the gazebo, even though one of them is with the same friends.

  10. There's a whole host of bands I've seen in the last year or so I'd love to see at EOTR Vlure (and there would be no one better for a late night secret set than Vlure), Hallan, Opus Kink, Youth Sector, Lemondaze, Enola Gay, Sprints, King Hannah, Egyptian Blue, Bullet Girl, Scattered Ashes, Been Stellar, Ditz, Panic Shack.

Plus hopefully some returnees WH Lung, The Murder Capital, Black Country New Road, Katy J Pearson, PVA, Crack Cloud

GM are always going to have a solid line up but I just hope thst they manage to book similarly culturally diverse acts next year.  I thought this year’s line up was excellent in that respect.  Acts like Dur-Dur Band, Wau Wau Colleftif, Otoboke Beaver (they were booked for 2020) and Orchestra Poly-Rhythmo de Cotonou would be cool but there’s loads of other possibilities and loads I wouldn’t have heard of.

Agreed.  Hopefully GM will have taken note of the reception given to Orchestra Baobab, Mdou Moctar and BCUC and are able to bill for 2023 some comparable and similarly diverse African acts.

    Cons

Which also includes the problem of mini wagons everywhere. Which, combined with people wanting to use middle to front of stages as a place for a picnic, including the dimness in Far Out, made it a bit ridiculous at times to navigate. Walled Garden was ridiculous at some point with sitter. Again, plenty of room, but not getting up or moving when people wanted to stand.

100% agreement with this, particularly the comment about the Walled Garden.  It seems to me that for the last few years the 'sitters' including mini-wagons have been creeping ever further forward on both the Mountain Stage and the Walled Garden.  I thought there used to be a 'rule' of no chairs or carriages on the flat bit of the Mountain Stage after a certain time, but that appears to have gone out of the window.

And while I'm here, definitely a retrograde step to have food stalls near the Walled Garden Stage again.

Finally managed to secure tickets via Twickets!  Hooray.

They came with a Settlers carpark pass.  Does anyone know if I can still camp in the "normal" bit of the campsite if I park in Settlers?  Is the Settlers carpark preferable to the normal one (i.em less of a schlep!).

The Settlers car park is infinitely preferable to the Orange car park, much less of a walk, and easy to get to a good camping spot.

  14. On the basis that Rose City Band have just announced a UK tour with dates starting on Sept 2nd, I would hope that the tour might actually be starting on Sept 1st at Larmer Tree Gardens.  Difficult to think of a better addition that they could make.  But just in case, to avoid disappointment, I've got my ticket for the Moth Club date.

  15. I've seen PC a few times and they seem to be alternately good and not so good.  However the last time I saw them was at EOTR headlining the Garden Stage and they were just stunning.  A absolute must-see for me, so already worried about who they might clash with.

EOTR and GM are both marvellous but EOTR edges it for me as a) there are just so many kids at GM b) it doesn't have the Garden Stage/forest/Piano stage area (although their main stage is slightly better) and c) I found the camping more cramped.

I've heard it said that for those of us who go to both EOTR and GM that your preference will be for whichever of the 2 you first went to (and thus fell in love with first). I went to EOTR first. I'm with all the points above. I also like the way pretty much all the food outlets are in one place at EOTR with the tables in the middle, meaning I can quickly check queue lengths for my possible options and then sitting down I enjoy the random conversations with people I join at a table or that join me; this seems to happen far more for me at EOTR.  That EOTR is significantly smaller helps too.  I'm sure I could easily argue the case the other way, particularly having done GM Settlers for the first time this year, but first love wins.

I'm not getting there until Friday, never been EOTR before so hoping it will still be alright finding a pitch late! (Only have a small tent to worry about, thankfully)

Also my friend I was supposed to be meeting there has dropped out, so does anyone have any advice for soloers? 😄

https://www.facebook.com/groups/125270931623/announcements  End of the Road - Happy Campers is a solo campers group, this page tells you where you could find everyone, and you would be very welcome to join.  The FB group is also used by a ton of other folk as an alternative / supplement to this forum.

Perhaps a silly question but can we just show our tickets on our phones? First year I'll be taking a smartphone to a festival and don't have access to a printer at the minute.

Yes, but I'd make sure you have it downloaded as there's no guarantees on getting a signal anywhere on site.  Ditto the Covid vax or LFT proof.

Anyone got any nice tips for new or smaller bands?

Not sure if they've already been mentioned, and trying to avoid those who have been : CMAT, PVA, Yard Act.  And I'm expecting big things of TBC! 😁
