Clun Green Man Festival 2009


The Clun Green Man Festival is a traditional springtime festival, held over three days on the first May Bank Holiday of the year from Saturday 2nd to Monday 4th May. The Festival takes place in the town of Clun in South Shropshire. The programme is full of live music, drama, and medieval malarkey and fun for all the family.

The festival kick-starts with The Popes with support from The Boys from Bedlam, playing live at Clun Memorial Hall on Saturday 2nd May. Admission is by ticket only, £15 from the White Horse Inn, tel. 01588 640305 and Enterprise House.

On Sunday afternoon there's a Medieval Street Fair (free admission) with The Frost Queen's Battle held in the Square, with a play by the Clun Mummers, plus Morris dancing with Clun Mummers, street entertainers, jesters and unicylists, live music with Southern Sounds Jazzmen, The Swords of Chivalry, and market and food stalls.

In the evening there at 8pm in the Memorial Hall a live show by The Wurzels with The Whiskey River Boys, gig tickets are priced at £12.50.

From noon on Monday 4th May, a procession through the town precedes the dramatic battle between the Green Man and Dame Frostie, the Spirit of Winter, fought out on Clun Bridge. The Green Man must win if they are to have a Summer in Clun!

All being well, the Green Man will then open the May Fair on Clun Castle Meadow with craft demonstrations, strolling musicians and maypole dancing, puppet shows, story telling, entertainers, circus acts, workshops and duck racing on the River Clun plus a variety of stalls and refreshments.

Throughout the afternoon the Plantagenet Historical Society will re-enact medieval life with knights in armour, squires, archers and court ladies. Medieval re-enactment including squire training, archery, and dancing. Entrance: Adult £3, Accompanied children: £1, children under 5: free.
