Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers have been announced as the opening night headliner of next summer's Isle of Wight Festival. It will be their first major UK show in 20 years.

The 'American Girl' heartland rocker will take the top slot on the main stage on Friday 22nd June with their first ever UK festival appearance and their first major UK show in 20 years.

The 'Don't Come Around Here No More' singer has sold millions of albums, filled arenas, and hobnobbed with George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison whilst sustaining a decades-long career with the Heartbreakers he's had hits in five different, and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

John Giddings, the Festival's promoter, said "We are proud to present Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers at the Isle of Wight Festival finally – it has taken years to achieve but I'm sure it will be worth the wait – they are one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time."

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band will headline the Sunday, with Elbow, Biffy Clyro, Noel Gallagher, Example, Noah & The Whale, Vaccines, Madness, and The Christians also confirmed. For the line-up details as available please click here. No other acts have been confirmed yet for 2012.

The festival has moved into the fallow Glastonbury Festival weekend for one year only. The dates for the eleventh Isle of Wight Festival have been announced as from Friday 22nd until Sunday 24th June 2012.

The festival now in it's eleventh year, takes place at Seaclose Park, Newport, Isle of Wight There are no other acts confirmed yet for 2012.

Tickets are on sale priced at £190 for adult camping, and £95 for a child ticket (aged 7 to 12 years). The price of an adult ticket without camping will be £160 and £80 for children (aged 7 to 12 years). All children 6 years old and under on 22nd June 2012 can go for free but must still have a ticket. A campervan permit will be priced at £100 (all occupiers must also have a valid Camping ticket). Every person attending the festival must purchase a ticket. This includes babes in arms.
