  1. Do you like Matt Berninger? I've been a big The National fan ever since the release of their 2005 album, Alligator. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Alligator where Matt Berninger’s presence became more apparent. I think Boxer was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of the Dessners, Berninger and the Devendorfs. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Fake Empire. In this song, Matt Berninger addresses the problems of abusive political authority. Slow Show is the most moving pop song of the 2000s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Matt Berninger’s solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like Loved So Little and Oh Drearie. But I also think Matt Berninger works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Return To The Moon, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

  2. Their festival sets, although disappointing that you don't get the full show, are usually condensed stormers.

    Gutted I'll be missing this.

In response to all who replied to my above message, I've been listening to Boxer. I like it (not super love it, but like it). My favourite songs are Slow Show and Ada.

I'll listen to High Violet soon. 🙂

You're not supposed to love it at first 😄 but the more you put it, the more you get out!

For me Frankenstein is an album of 9’s and 5’s - the highs (Eucalyptus, New Order, Tropic Morning News, Grease…) are fantastic but there are a few duds.

Laugh Track is mostly 7’s at least with a few 9’s - Smoke Detector, Space Invader, Tour Manager…)

    Poolside
    Eucalyptus
    New Order
    Tropic Morning News
    Alien
    Alphabet City
    Weird Goodbyes
    Space Invader
    Tour Manager
    Smoke Detector

Monkey about with the running order and you’ve got one of their best ever.

First Two Pages Of Laugh Track (preserving the track number and choosing one or t'other):

    1. Once Upon A Poolside (feat. Sufjan Stevens)
    2. Deep End (Paul’s in Pieces)
    3. New Order T-Shirt
    4. Turn Off the House
    5. Tropic Morning News
    6. Laugh Track
    7. Space Invader
    8. Grease In Your Hair
    9. Coat on a Hook
    10. Tour Manager
    11. Send For Me
    12. Smoke Detector

It's pretty wild looking back at it now. Brand New are one of my favourite ever bands, and they were on tour with a (by that time) fairly pedestrian mainstream rock band. Could have made the argument the following year that BN were the bigger band.

    I miss them 😞

Brand New supported Incubus way back as well, saw them at the NEC, great gig.

Lose The ArcherFearlessChampagne ProblemsDelicateAugust and Bejeweled, and you can still get four or five news one in there.

We can't lose any of them!

Better off losing Paramore and adding one more to each act.

Listened to the Taylor's version of 1989 now, and the differences are (unsurprisingly) minimal compared to the original

And as for the vault songs, they are largely absolute trash sadly

Wow, the vault songs on 1989 (after an already stunning album) are up there with her best work. Is It Over Now? one of her greatest songs of all.

  9. I thought Knight's Fish & Chips was great, curry sauce by the bucket load and they have a small garden area out back. But then I'm starved of such culinary delights outside the UK, so my standards may have dropped.

  10. I used the hack in 2013 and if I'd known about the hack this year I would've used it as well, especially after about half an hour of nothing - heck I'm mainly on here during that time for exactly things like that.

As it was I didn't get tickets, probably won't be trying in the resale.

Now the hack shouldn't be possible at all, but if it is I'm disappointed that I didn't know about it not that others used it.

Once you get to the Add reg page, close everything else down, it may crash but stick with it. Once you get a session token looks like you are in, just have to refresh and get through each stage

    Tabs aff?

  12. Where are we expecting double dates that’s the main question?

Big gap to fill between London and Edinburgh so I’m guessing 2 in london again unless that’s a “festival” thing like Castlefield? Same goes for Edinburgh?

Maybe they’ll just stick 2 nights in the Piece Hall in the middle, or is that weekends and later in the year?

Not been following the threads for a while. Are we thinking Madge is likely now? Hopefully The National would be on an alternate day!

Either up against Madonna or Dua Lipa, certainly not going to be against Coldplay (if the rumours are true). Rather they didn’t headline a stage at all in that case, bloody pointless.

if you want to buy some slavery go for one of the glamping or pre-pitched options.

If however you're just looking for some lackey to schlep on site and grab you a prime spot in Row Mead while you finish your artisan sourdough and warm up the chopper then you're on your own sunshine.

    That's clearly what they want

  15. Missing a lot of key tracks for the people who just go tonight if they do a totally unique set and the encore regulars would be down to Terrible Love and About Today, but they could change up 15-20 tracks without anyone batting an eyelid.

Shows just how much depth they have now (not that they didn't already since, say, TWFM). Will they do it? Wouldn't put it past them, but this is a one-off gig for most of the attendees and not pre-announced like at Homecoming.

Reading this thread and wondering if it was just me that didn't expect to be taken to gigs as a kid

Went to a few Beautiful South gigs with my parents but that was their taste and we (the kids) did/do absolutely love them (the band, and our parents) then/now because of that, but we certainly didn't expect/ask to go., just like that's what we're doing, cool.
