  1. HDDVD, otherwise known as the format that lost :( has, I think, a few major advantages over Bluray right now.

1/ You can pick up one of the Drives for about £35.

2/ They are backwards compatible so, even if you dont want to buy the newer discs ( although they are also cheap where sold ) it will upscale all your old discs.

I think that makes a lot of sense for a short term solution. Hang back 2-3 years and see if BluRay kicks off.

  2. I watched Red Dawn last night. :P

Even though it was one of the earliest Reaganite, anti Communist Propoganda Flicks, I grudgingly admit that it still has a lot of Power. It certainly doesn't glamourise the violence or shy away from showing consequence. A guilty pleasure.

  3. Codec errors only tend to come up if you arent signed into your profile on live, but they can occur when you are signed in. not as much as you appear to suggest though. (In my experience)

have you tried playing them via a usb stick drive?

is your console completely up to date firmware wise?

is it constantly connected to live?

I have 300gb of avi's on my media drive upstairs, I stream these to my xbox using the media sharing option through windows media extender, its a bit of faffing to set up, but once its done its solid. is your PC's processor reasonably fast? celerons struggle I have been told, I would say anything less than a P4 might struggle, but most modern dual cores should piss it.

I would personally recommend you try a number of your avis via a usb stick drive, whilst connected to live. I reckon 2% of my avi's come up with codec errors, and even some of those work eventually when connected and signed in to live.

It will also play mp4's such as hi def movie trailers downloaded from apple's trailer site.

If streaming simply wont work for you, and you cant be arsed dragging and dropping avi's onto a usb stick (8gb ones are about £30 now) you could always buy a usb hard disc drive (one that doesnt need a power supply - for convenience) and format it to FAT32 - and the 360 will recognise it as a "portable device". I got a western digital 320Gb HDD for about £70 from PC world, its ace.

  4. nobody uses transcode360 any more because you dont need to, the xbox360 plays divx's anyway. as does the ps3.

transcode 360 was ok when I needed it, a bit buggy and temperamental at times, but as I said, its redundant now.

wmp10 does the job beautifully now.

  5. Does anyone use transcode360? the media sharing software recommended for the 360.

I downloaded it last night but read the forum help pages and got put off installing it. It seems loads of people have had problems with it and I dont want to mess with the puter.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

  6. Did an Iron Man and Incredible Hulk double bill.

Iron man wins hands down but The Hulk was better than expected if a little predictable. They are obviously planning a double header.

How cool is Rob Downey???......................................... pretty damm cool.

  7. New Keane album................................. they use that keyboard sound from "Ashes to Ashes" by Bowie. I never realised how much he owns that keyboard sound.

Sounds a lot more 80s than anything else they've done, usually a bad thing in my book but one or two tracks do jump out on first listen. Nowhere near Hopes and Fears though, sadly.

  8. so what happens with a rrod then? do you have to send it off to get fixed or invariably does it mean your xbox's knackered and you'll have to buy a new one?

the apparent frequency of them makes me glad I've got my PC....which over the next 6 months (most oct/nov) has some gems coming out:

pro evo, far cry 2, fallout 3, call of duty 5: world at war, football manager 2009, grand theft auto 4, left 4 dead, street fighter IV, empire: total war, starcraft 2 , resident evil 5....

....and then other games that might be alright like wolfenstein 3, mirror's edge, ghostbusters, red alert 3, quantum of solace, shaun white snowboarding, nhl 2009, tiger woods 2009, new prince of persia, tombraider, spinter cell, need for speed etc,

and then in development, new aliens, new duke nukem, alan wake; but my most anticipated in development is deus ex 3.

    good times indeed!

  9. I have allways thort this. Its one of the few things that Glastonbury is really behind on. Everyone waxes lyrical about the ability to go where you want and take booze you have braught in the supermarket anywhere you go, which is great if you drive but the fact that you cant buy a case on site anywhere is a proper pain for us who dont drive everywhere.
  10. Now that Glastonbury is being officially sold as a 5 day festival, is this going to have an impact on the number of people that do actually come for the entire 5 days?

The amount of people arriving on the Wednesday seems to have increased every year since I started coming 1994. That year we were practically the only people on our campsite when we arrived on the Wednesday afternoon and it gave us a couple of days to get our bearings before the mayhem of Friday.

If everyone is now going to arrive at once, is this not going to create nightmares getting into the festival as well as trying to leave?
