  1. Just back from this years Glasto, and already planning the next one! I think Taylor Swift is a cert, but after that, who knows? Pink? Madonna? Rihanna? Could Beyoncé be an option? I also heard Spice Girls have been asked.

And I know Guns & Roses don't seem to have gone down so well this year, but Metallica did back in 2014, so I think AC/DC could be an option? Surely getting close to retirement, with just the PowerTrip festival announced since their last album came out. They do have wide-ranging appeal, and have also been mentioned...

  2. Having not had much joy with my earlier question regarding getting back to London, I have found accommodation in Ryde, which doesn't look too far away from the festival site on the map. However will there be plenty of buses running after midnight going either from the site or from Newport town centre? Again, if anyone has any information on this, or has made this journey in the past, I would love to know the score! Thanks in advance.

  3. I know I could probably research this myself, but wondered if anyone has had to get back to London after the last band has finished on the Friday? Looks like The Human League will be on until nearly 1am, so might aim to leave the site around midnight. I normally come over on the Red Jet from Cowes, and then would be looking to get a train from Southampton. Even if transport does run late, does anyone have any experience as to how busy it is likely to be - I don't want to get to Cowes and find a queue a mile long, and then have to wait until the Saturday morning to get the next available crossing!! Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

  4. Pretty happy with this, to be honest. Muse always great at festivals, and already a number of other acts that I would be happy to see. Already stronger than this year, and with a lot more still to be added, it should be a good year. Interested to see how Kasabian sound with Serge singing...

  5. Agree - good to see Isle of Wight back this year, and we were very lucky with the weather, etc. - but the lineup was not as good as in previous years (maybe understandably, without being able to get many international acts). We also found it very expensive this year, even more so than usual. Over £6 for a beer and £14 for a pizza? That really is taking the mick. And was it just my group, but was it much quieter this year? Did not seem to have as many speaker stacks on the main stage as usual, and you could hear people talking over the music, which isn't good...

  6. We have done the Premium VIP a couple of times before, and have always been able to use both the standard VIP to the left of the main stage as well as the Black Star Bar to the right. Not sure if this picture is much help, but it shows the back of the Black Start Bar and the platform which curves around the front and provided the best view of the main stage. It is not a 'standalone' viewing platform, like the one at Victorious, for example, but more of a large balcony around the bar.

Although I don't know for sure, I would be very surprised if this area did not have its own viewing area this year, as that is partly what you are paying for - I think I would ask for a refund if there was no viewing platform to the front and side of the Premium VIP area!

  7. Bit disappointing overall, and as someone else has posted, there doesn't seem to be anywhere to stay on the island this year! Not sure why this is - there can't be more people going than usual? In fact I would be surprised if it sells out, with many people choosing to play it safe this year and stay at home.

I have also heard a rumour that if festivals do go ahead, everyone will have to wear a mask, even outdoors! Has anyone else heard this?!

Anyone ever been VIP/Premium VIP - just wondering about experience/thought /what you get for the mega bucks . I;ve never seen a festival  that offers two tiers  of VIP to purchase  before hence curious on what the experience would be like and what could justify the price (apart from better loos and a bar with less queue  😁

We are lucky enough to have done both. Regular VIP offers your own area to the left of the main stage with OK views, until the end of the evening when it gets very crowded. Not much in the way of food offerings, but you do get the nice toilets which is what most people will be paying for. The Premium VIP used to be just for press, media, etc. but you can now buy tickets I believe for a massive price. For this you do get free food - we had a couple of hot meals each day and some snacks - and the holy grail of VIP - a free bar. This is to the right of the main stage and was renamed the Black Star bar after David Bowie. There is a raised platform at the front that gives excellent views of the main stage, but again it does get very crowded for the headliners/popular acts.

  9. I've thought for some time that they will have to cancel again this year, unfortunately. The certainly won't be able to go ahead with their original dates, even if the lockdown easing goes completely to plan.

I would imagine it would be very complicated and expensive to shift to another weekend, but then again, I would imagine the hunger for outdoor music festivals will be great once they are allowed, and so who knows?

I would go - have been every year from 2008, and always have a great time, although I don't rate this years line-up too highly.

Best bang for your £ was pints of Laguinitas IPA from the craft beer bar in Octopus Garden for £6. It wouldn’t be far off that in most pubs.

I avoided the overpriced Heineken and mainly stuck to pints of Maltsmiths for £5.50, didn’t think that was too bad really

Agree Octopus Garden always seems to have the best food and drink options.

And I was certainly aware there were cheaper options available than the overprice Heineken, just thought giving it in the smaller sized cans was a bit off...

Still a good festival, and no doubt will be back next year!

  11. Been going to Isle of Wight since 2008, and this year seemed a bit subdued compared with previous years. Also seems to be getting smaller, with less 'areas' and the need to put Platform One and Electric Love back into the camping area as if trying to spread things out...

Overall seemed quite quiet, apart from certain times, e.g. Keane in the Big Top. Maybe they should have tried to transfer them to the main stage when Jess Glynne pulled out?

You can certainly tell the bands that want it - Biffy Clyro were amazing, even though I am not a huge fan of their music. James always good value too, but there seemed to be quite a few more lacklustre performances this year.

The one thing I did think was really bad this year was the price of food and drink. Always expensive but this year a complete rip-off. Noticeably less choice and just not very nice. And who had the bright idea of selling Heineken for £5.30 only to give you a half pint can? Sorry, but this is robbery and should be reported - over £10 for a pint! Should be illegal...

  12. It amazes me that people are discussing headliners and line-ups for a festival that clearly no longer exits! Not only has V gone, but there is no way a new three day festival is going to take it's place on the same site and on the same dates!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, V started to loose its way (and core audience) when it started mixing in dance with indie, rock and alternative. This watered down their core offering and introduced a more transient and possibly fickle audience, who would not return to the festival year after year in the same way people like myself did.

In 2017 they went full pop/dance, without a Killiers, Kasabian or Kings of Leon in sight, and they were giving away tickets in the end. So why do so many people on this forum think they are going to come back with a new festival, offering up the same sort of line-up that killed V festival, but over 3 days, not 2, and it be a success? Particularly as we are now into February, and there has been no announcement?!

I think it is now time to face it. V, or anything similar, is not coming back this year. Maybe something else will be launched for 2019, but I would be speechless if anything happens in time for this summer, particularly as a lot of people (me included) will have already spent their festival budgets elsewhere...

  13. Sad, but not surprising. I went to the first V in 96, and have been every year since apart from this one. Started as an indy/rock festival, and as it got bigger started introducing a wider mix - everyone from Green Day to Lady Gaga! I know recently they had been veering more towards pop and dance, but they at least kept some indy bands to keep the likes of me interested!

My guess is that they were losing people from both camps, but still managed to make it work with so many diverse acts. This year was the first where I can honestly say there wasn't a single act I really wanted to see, and so with regret, we decided to call it a day. And yes, this was also partly to do with being older and now having kids, etc. the likes of On Blackheath and Camp Bestival are now our festivals of choice. Still, a shame if it does go, and the end of an era. Would still go back if they broadened the interest again, however...

  14. Hi,

Have non camping tickets for this years Sonisphere, so looking to stay in a local B&B or hotel - can anyone suggest somewhere half decent that will still be available but is not too far away? Checked the nearest Premier Inn, and they are charging nearly £1000 for the three nights! Doesn't have to be walking distance, but a short bus/cab journey would be good...

Grateful for any suggestions or recommendations anyone might have!

    Cheers,

    Mark

  15. Just to say, having been to the British Summertime Stones gig yesterday, I wanted to make a couple of comments.

Firstly, The Stones were excellent, every bit as good as reported - brilliant set played with real energy and enthusiasm. Amazing!

The sound was much better than previous Hyde Parg gigs - still not as loud as I would have liked, but a definite improvement.

Also like the layout, the new stage, all the screens, food and drink options - even the toilets were far better!

On the downside the place seemed to be heaving from mid afternoon, with massive queues forming for all the food options and bars. The 'other' stages were all tiny, filling to capacity very early on and not really providing any decent alternative to the main stage.

My biggest issue, however, had to be the tiered viewing areas. Not sure if this was just for the Stones or a Summertime festival idea, but unless you had paid top dollar for a tier 1 or 2 ticket, you were stuck behind a barrier way back from the stage. Yes, there was a tiny area to the left of the stage where you could get closer, but this just wasn't an option unless you were one of the first in and willing to stand in one place all day. This really isn't in the festival spirit, and meant if you wanted a comfortable position out of the usual front of stage scrum, you had to stand way back near one of the, admittedly good, screens.

So, bit of a mixed bag for this new festival. Keep the sound, improve bar and food queues, bigger second stage and no tiered ticketing, and they could be on to something good!

  16. My wife and I both had chairs inside the arena last year, and we were on a weekend ticket with no camping. From what I can remember, loads of people had chairs, so is this a new rule for this year, or perhaps it is not very strictly policed...?

  17. I have heard that they are now going to be charging £5 per person per day to use the shuttle bus from Chelmsford station to Hylands Park - what gives?

This has always been a free service since my first V back in '96 - what a rip-off! It is not as if they don't make enough money already with food/drink/ticket price etc.

If true, what does everyone else think of this? They know it is too far to walk easily, so don't think anyone traveling by train will have much choice...
