    Stranger Things episode 4!!!

I’ve watched it twice (husband fell asleep first time around so watched it again together last night) and thought it was one of their best episodes. The tension in the final scenes was so well done and the musical choice perfection.

Good to see this - it needs to be seen this way by more of the public. It won't be though

That thread isn’t all good news (though definitely better than hoped) - further on he makes the point that high incidental rates make managing admissions very difficult. When you have to convert operating theatres to covid isolation wards then you can’t use them for routine or emergency operations. He also mentions the level of staff absence, pressure on community services, already delayed treatments due to covid that cannot be delayed further, and the huge pressure on GPs to deliver boosters over all else. The system will still be creaking, though probably not enough for the government to do anything about it.

I've been watching The Queen's Gambit. It's really shockingly good, how knew chess could be most interesting sports drama on tv.

I posted similar on Facebook this week - they made chess exciting and emotional, it was brilliant television.

Going to get back on this

Have finished season 1 of Money Heist - I noticed there are 4 more. Is it worth it ?  wondering if it will just get dull after a while and have a feeling it will be dragged out

    We ended up hate-watching it.

    Really?

    I thought it was underwhelming.

It also made me feel old as I thought the sex scenes went on just that bit too long 😳

 a lot of people seem to have found the sex scenes an uncomfortable watch but I thought the way the scenes between Connell and Marianne were handled was exceptionally well done. The first one where he expertly demonstrated how easy it is to confirm consent, especially. And I think some of the other scenes, Marianne with other partners, were designed to make us feel a bit uncomfortable. I read the book straight after and will watch the series again. The scene in ep10

where Connell pours his heart out to the therapist
was so close to the bone personally that it physically hurt to watch it. Brilliant stuff.
  6. When talking about toilets or women’s spaces I think it’s important to note that most sensible people distinguish between trans women, and men who will abuse self-id to gain access to spaces. Self-id doesn’t require a person to “present” as the opposite sex. They just have to say they are. THAT is what most gender critical people were opposed to when the proposals to review the GRA came out. And that’s where the conflict started. (As an aside, self-Id also gets rid of the need to offer counselling, hormones or surgery so seems to me to be a disadvantage to people suffering with gender dysphoria who may have their access to treatment restricted because they can be told to just identify as the opposite sex, which isn’t always enough to alleviate GD).

I’ve definitely had experiences on nights out where the women’s toilet has been a sanctuary and any man trying to enter gets met with the vicious tongue and if necessary claws of those inside!

You could also google Alex Drummond for an example of how the definition of transwoman has shifted. It’s not always about “passing as a woman”.

There are many, many strands to the trans rights debate that have nothing to do with toilets and many different people have different dogs in the fight so to speak - for some it’s about the transition of children, or treating rapid onset gender dysphoria (you’ll likely have seen the debate around the Tavistock and what ex-employees have been saying about the affirmation approach). For others it’s about women’s sports. For others it’s about the impact on lesbians who say they wouldn’t wish to have sex with a “girldick”. For still others it’s about how we support people who detransition, who are often ostracised from the trans communities but live with health complications from hormones and surgery. Or the fact that current transactivism seems to harden traditional gender roles and expectations instead of shattering them. Or exploring why so many young women who transition are also autistic and why that might be.

That’s not exhaustive but just to demonstrate the point, and some of those debates have more merit than others, while some probably have more obvious solutions than others.

And no real reason not to have unisex toilet cubicles

    https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/life-style/women/sexual-assault-unisex-changing-rooms-sunday-times-women-risk-a8519086.html%3famp

there is some (more anecdotal) evidence that girls in schools where single sex spaces have been replaced by unisex facilities are avoiding using the toilets during the school day completely.

Social convention is a powerful motivator of behaviour. A man entering a single sex space can be challenged because he has no legitimate reason to be there. A man entering a unisex space can’t be, or a person who presents as male but self-identifies as female if self-id becomes the norm. A common response is to say that no man is going to falsely self-identify as a woman in order to gain access to female spaces. But the lengths some men will go to in order to abuse women are well documented. The risk may be small but why else would the EA allow for single sex exemptions if not to protect women and girls from such risk? Not all men are rapists but almost all rapists are men (or at least they were until crime stats start being based on how a person identifies and suddenly there’s an increase in “female” sex offenders).

I completely agree with Neil that the discussion of where trans rights and women’s rights may come into conflict has to be allowed to happen without fear from either side of being abused. I know JKR has been following this issue for a while and wouldn’t be surprised if her tweet was designed to really shine a spotlight on the way discussion about the issue is handled. It’s enormously complex, with the left wing radical feminist position finding an uncomfortable bedfellow with the Christian Right, and the newer trans rights activists alienating many older transsexuals who have no desire to push for change and see their tactics as harmful. The fact it’s only really playing out on Twitter only makes it all more toxic.

and saying all that risks a person being doxxed and reported to their employer as transphobic 🤷‍♀️

Watched living with yourself - Not that great

We’re muddling through it too. It has the odd moment but half the time I can’t work out which Miles I’m supposed to be looking at which doesn’t help make sense of the story

Finished it today, not that it needed much improvement but it truly gets better each season. I fear Netflix chopping it soon though.

I think it’s got one more season in it with that suggestion in the last episode that S&Z move in together.  I wouldn’t be sad for it to end after that.

I've just signed up for a free month of Netflix and had seen S1&2 before - catching up with S3 at the mo.  Sounds like not one to completely binge on!

I think this is series 7. There are some great moments in the series as a whole but I don’t think you’d be missing much if your trial expires before you get through it!

  11. I think this was my favourite series of Stranger Things (though the Neverending Story part was almost a shark jump for me) but agree they need to bring it to an end as it’s the same story each time. I cried my eyes out at the letter though.

Followed by festival goers unable to find their caravans , campers or cars !

That was me on Saturday morning. One of our party broke her finger and suspected broken hand after demonstrating a yoga move to my 8 year old after a few gins ? so had to walk them to find our car to go to minor injuries (easier than getting their camper back out). It was a very frantic few minutes pacing up and down clicking the key hoping to hear the car unlock!

    Thanks for those.

It's not just for meeting up with people that's an issue, it is also  because the is no point in making sure our child has a wristband with our phone numbers on if we can't be contacted. I think I'll take an EE PAYG sim with next time.

As the people in the welfare tent said to me on Sunday morning (after my lovely Mariachi breakfast at the Hurley Burley Cafe ?), those who put wristbands on their children are the least likely to lose them! But the irony of no signal wasn’t lost on us either. We just kept pointing the welfare tent out to our two each time we passed it in the hope they’d remember to go there.

I'm in two minds about the ending.....it was nice to see how the characters ended up, but it was just wrapped up too neatly - I expect that with a show like Big Bang or Friends or some saccharine crap, but this is GOT, which brought us Baelor, The Red Wedding, Hardhome, etc - it should go out with a shock or some ambiguity, but it felt a lot like a whimper.

Some nice throw back touches and good to see some old characters, like sickly Robyn et al and the ending of Jon at the gates of the wall being a call back to the first scene, but we deserved more.

I felt there was a hint of future conflict. Bran was obviously king in name only. There’s still a dragon flying around somewhere. Sansa is queen but to a decimated North. Arya is off on her adventures. I didn’t feel it was *too* neat. Neat enough for me though.
