  1. Hey mudfight, I'm pretty sure it's Sad too.

Of course I should have no idea, other than the fact that 'Sad' is f*ckin awesome.

Just a testament to how great this band is, it didn't even make the cut for Binaural. Like countless other PJ songs it could have brought them mainstream success if released as a single. The studio recording is immense! I don't know anyone who doesn't like it.

But yeah, the Reading performance was cool > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84ZrN8a3RVw

  2. The NME is the most sub-standard, agenda-filled, amateur, excuse for journalism I have ever had the misfortune of coming across. The entire thing makes me sick to my stomach and anyone who appears in it is a c*nt. I cannot see what it has to do with music

  3. If they play Wembley next year I'll probably be in Asia so that will suck big balls. Hopefully I should have some spare money when I come back so I can go and see them in America. Cus they're just that damn good.

Watching it again now. Grievance baby!

  4. I don't think they were the best EVER - that's going a bit too far for me.

Reading had the better set for my Pearl Jam preferences - Why Go?, Jeremy, Once, Better Man, Blood, Even Flow, Alive and best of all - CROWN OF THORNS baby!!!!!! Couldn't believe it when they burst into that! Spot on.

It was a classic set but sound quality and other little things prevent it going alongside Foos in 95 and maybe even Maiden last year which was an immense triumph.

I always expected PJ to be good and by God they were!

  5. awesome!

Yeah, Crown of Thorns, Soon Forget and Sad! Absolutely brilliant set. I saw Sad on tv and thought it sounded better than everything. Apparently Ed got a bit teary eyed at one point? Bloody softy!

Must have been a great moment for them.

  6. Surprised they didn't unleash Baba at Leeds, what with The Who's famous gig there and everything. But they've now done two of their big three heavy covers in f**kin Up and RITFW so the stage is set for Baba on Sunday.

It's the perfect festival song and they do it so well. I'm sure they'll bust it out in Reading.

OUT HEEEEERE IN THE FIELDS!!

  7. Dublin was AWESOME.

Education for the first time EVER

and covered Boys Are Back In Town for the first time ever!!!

Couldn't get any better than that  Got one of McCready's plecs (used on Do The Evolution) and my friend got a tambourine. ;)

  8. Just found this video of Light Years from Pinkpop 2000. As someone who's experienced loss of life a few times, personally this is one of the most touching songs on the subject. When people die their light still shines through the people they touched.

    Your light's reflected now.

    Reflected from afar.

    We were but stones.

    Your light made us stars.

On a sidenote, how under rated is Binaural as an album? It's probably the one I've listened to most over the past few years. Would have been even better with Sad on it.

  9. I remember that - sure I have it on video somewhere form the days when satellite TV was all grainy in the rain...

Was that the one when Eddie painted "pro-choice" on his arm or something? I can only remember Black and State of Love and Trust...

  10. Every time I come back to this thread I find myself asking 'Is work really THIS boring?'

Talk about the height of pedantry and over music! Something that has absolutely nothing to do with better or worse.

I'm listening to Hall and Oates right now. Puff on that one.

Cultseeker, your talk of 'genius' and 'originality' make me smile because Pearl Jam are an extremely unoriginal and derivative band.

Oh and how could I forget Supergrass funkymunky? Love them!

  11. What!?!?!

Where did I say that it was a rule of extraction? I merely said that it was one variable in the configuration of whether something was good or not. So big is this factor in Pulp and Blurs case I felt it warranted highlighting.

  12. Someone mentioned The White Stripes. I much prefer Pearl Jam's music on record, for example (I own all Pearl Jam's albums and only Elephant by the stripes)...

But I saw them last year at Glastonbury and that performance single handedly gave me hope for music and how particularly powerful a medium live music is. Jack played like a jazz musician. Totally spontaneous, absolutely 100% in the moment and I felt like anything could happen. It was spine tingling. I've never felt so alive as I did during that performance.

After the festival people were talking about how good Coldplay were and no one talked about The White Stripes. That made me very sad, but not for long. I'd been transformed.

Brit Pop or Grunge? Hard to say. Both important, I love both movements. Maybe Britpop for me, because there's only so long you can listen to someone moan about how depressing their life is. There's a place for both...and the likes of Definitely Maybe and Different Class (I love Pulp, what a great band) sit proudly alongside Jar of Flies and Vitalogy on my shelf.

One final point on grunge. American music was changed for the better by the 80's hardcore bands, topped off when Nevermind dislodged Michael Jackson at the top of the charts. By the time Pearl Jam came along the work had already been done.

  13. ah, ye old U2 vs Pearl Jam battle. Or should I say *insert big band from the last twenty years here* vs Pearl Jam battle. It's simple, as stated previously. U2 were good, now they suck. It's the same story with the likes of Foo Fighters, Chili Peppers to an extent etc. 'OK, now lets just make a shit load of money and put together easy common demonenator music'. They've perfected their craft. Bono could write a number one hit whilst lying in a coma. It would be f*cking shite. But it'd get to number one. Says all you need to know about the average consumer.

i love u2 ALOT, whored there last tour over here to death, there gig in dublin at croke park (first night) was mindblowing, closest ive ever come to crying at a gig (ill happily admit it), never witnessed at atmosphere like it. think i might see how much its gonna cost to go out to hawaii for u2 and pearl jam, thats a bloody amazing lineup

anyways, back to pearl jam. anyone else got much of there live stuff from the current tour? managed to get hold of the san francisco and albany sets, they sound absolutely amazing. "blood" from the 16th july san francisco especially sounds awesome, loving how the set lists are completely different and how they dont seem to play the singles every show - i.e there playing what makes them happy on the night it seems from my point of view.

the 10minute version of rearviewmirror is rather amazing

anyways, what do people think they'll do at reading? they dont seem the sort of band to just play all there hits which most big bands do at festivals, i just hope that the reading crowd gives them the respect they deserve, because i dont think the average reading goer is going to have a clue about anything post Vs which is a disgrace. listening to these recordings and hearing the crowd go for it on the likes of better man, yellow ledbetter , life wasted etc is just sounds so bloody good, i just pray its full of pearl jam obsessies and not just people waiting for them to play 'alive'

  14. The Point Theatre in Dublin is where it's at.

23rd August, first leg of the tour.

I will be there. Oh yes...I will be there. Did anyone see them on VH1 Storytellers last night? They sounded great. I'm sure it'll be repeated a few times so look out if you missed it.
