  1. I received my tickets.

I had to sign an electronic device and produce identification to prove I was in fact Serj Trouserdale.

The man who deleivered them was a nice chap, he drove a Renault Clio and wore shorts.

  2. You're going to have to explain. What's cretinous about that?

Led Zep was *all about* them being that age and at that point in their lives. You can't turn back time. What could be sillier than a 62 year old singing Lemon Juice?

Plant has current material that suits where he is in his life right now. I'd far rather see him doing that.

  3. To a point music creation - if it is your job - is going to driven by profit. I'm a designer - and create things. I'm certainly not doing it for free - and my manager (or lets say record label) will be making money out of me. I don't really see the problem. Band at their conception will be making music for the love of it - and then if in the future, get on telly, get on radio, sell a shed load of albums - a stadium tour, a range of dolls - will be making a profit. Is this so wrong?

Now, there are many many small bands on the evening pub circuit who are doing it for the love of it - but there is a good chance that if Mr Record label is there, offers them a deal, they give up their day jobs - then they have to be driven by some kind of profit to make the band work and thus survive.

  4. Sorry but you are wrong, there are great numbers of musicians who release there music for free under Creative Commons licences and a massive netlabel scene that allows and encourages others to do this.

A small selection of such netlabels:

    www.acroplane.co.uk

    www.miga-label.org

    www.pendriverec.com

    www.thinner.cc

    www.aquietbump.com

    www.thecentrifuge.co.uk

  5. No but he then said that some produce the music for the love of it and not for greed.

I do not think it is greedy to want to make a living out of music or art. Lets face it outside of the "folk" traditional story telling songs, music has been produced mainly for fame and fortune. There are not that many altruistc song writers around, and the mass majority of musciians would want to retain control over their work.

  6. And I think N-Dubz do the same.

Now, we could go back to talking about The Saturdays, and then we could all agree :P

Then again, I *know* where you'd stand on S-Club Seven, and yet the S-Club machine made Don't Stop Movin', another stormer of a pop record.

  7. blimey - you're an angry thing aren't you! Relax, it is only music, and if you don't like N-Dubz or whoever, turn them off, or don't add to the 'immense' profits by buying their music.

Artists can make songs for the love of music, but its the way of the world, that they have to feed, house and clothe themselves - hence making a profit - I suspect that N-Dubz profits are miniscule compared with those of say Radiohead - have they sold out too?

Additionally, a sign that your music is liked, accepted and enjoyed will show through in profits - thats your reward for making a success of what you've created.

  8. Aside from the Saturdays who are talentless, that statement is totally untrue. N-Dubz and Chipmunk write their own stuff, and love them or loathe them - they've both been pretty successful. And as being told what to wear - I think N-Dubz management would tell Dappy to remove his daft hat collection! Just because they appeal to the mass yoof urban street markets (sadly I ain't in the yoof category anymore) doesn't mean they are shite. Bands have to make a profit - the days of doing things just for the love of music can't exist any longer... and quite clearly, you are not being open minded about music!
  9. I don't know much about this kind of music, nor do I like it -- but I believe you're misrepresenting N-Dubz.

From what I an tell, N-Dubz make the kind of music they themselves like, on their own terms. Although I stand by what I said above about the non-importance of writing your own songs, it's significant that N-Dubz do write their own songs because it's evidence that they're not puppets.

  10. I got to wondering over the weekend what makes some music acceptable in peoples minds and other stuff open to ridicule

Over the weekend I was away with a very good girlfriend for her birthday weekend and as she loves Scouting for Girls I bought her tickets and we went to see them. Now SFG are often (always maybe) ridiculed on this board - and are seen as 'non' music- not worth seeing/talentless (and much worse)

I really enjoyed the gig, the guys play their own instruments, write their own songs and actually rock a lot more in real life than they do on their recorded tracks. The invoked singalongs, emotion and pure fun and took a great deal of the audience on a journey for a few hours ...... surely thats what any music is all about (and the audience was not full of 14 year old schoolgirls).. I was pleasantly surprised

It got me thinking about why people think some music is acceptable and other stuff not, or are peope natually like lemings and follow other peoples idea's and the media's thoughts without actually experiencing stuff and making up their own mind

I'd like to think I'd try anything (musically) once and then make up my own mind ... hopefully with the guts to say what I'm really thinking rather than what I am told I should think !

  11. For the record I absolutely hate stuff like N-Dubz and thinks like that. I think that they are an absolute shocking disgrace to the music industry and are completely souless, corporate and money grabbing. But every band has the right to play Glasto, I'm not overly keen on Scissor Sisters playing second from top but you've got to give them a chance even if you don't like them. Just look at all the controversy and hoo ha involving Jay-Z, it's all the same really, just rediculous overblown bollocks really.

I think Chipmunk, N-Dubz, Tinchy Strider etc. should all be put down as they are complete and utter strile shite compared to other bands that were in the charts but I know there would be things to do elsewhere and that it would keep the average Glastonbury goer happy, they have to cater for everyone. *Waits for the "NOT METAL FANS THOUGH LOLZ!!" backlash*

  12. nah, not while there's stuff like this around:

What they argue that he represents rape, murder, paedophilia, famine, war, environmental disasters, consumer credit, far right politics, greed? People actually get that from his music?

I doubt they meant he is a paedophilia or a rapist. I think they might have a point on some of the other issues you raised.
