Duke Special

Glastonbury Festival 2007 Review

By Scott Williams | Published:

I’m not actually intending to see Peter Wilson today. But the bar at the Other Stage only sells lager so I head to the Queens Head to see if it sells ale and end up watching half an hour of Duke Special’s set while queuing for a drink (they only sell cider or lager – rubbish pub!) as the marquee is packed to the rafters.

The performance is well worth watching, the band Peter has assembled around him are there more to provide a canvas on which his distinct lyrics and vocal can shine. He plays a few songs from ‘Songs From The Deep Forest’ and it’s a while until I realise who it is I’m watching.

He looks like he’s been going to Glastonbury for years, with his thick ‘dreadlocked’ hair but in reality this is his first visit. He looks like he’s probably been up all night and he’s slightly laconic and laid back but the songs are vibrant and before you know it the hooks have embedded and you’re singing along. It’s an intimate set and the crowd (and me) clearly are enjoying it ‘Brixton Leaves’ has the crowd cheering along in places – lots of fans here from Belfast?

An unexpected highlight of the weekend and a real up performance that had me leaving the tent as the Singstar karaoke started up grinning and ready for the weather.
