Glastonbury Festival 2002 reviews

By Stuart McCandlish | Published:

Kosheen – Jazzworld 9.30pm Saturday

You can’t help but like Sian Evans, Kosheen’s vocalist. Her enthusiasm for her job is infectious. Coupled with Darren Decoder and Markee Substance’s drum’n’bass breaks it is uplifting too. They are all clearly delighted to be playing a senior slot at Glastonbury and give this performance a lot of energy.

The set is basically a run through of their debut album ‘Resist’. There is plenty of variety with mellow songs like Harder followed by the big base lines of Pride. The best is saved for last, with a sublime Gone followed by the conventional mix of the now anthemic Hide U. The set is tight and Sian constantly gyrates around the stage. They radiate enjoyment at being at such a big occasion and the crowd soak this up bouncing to the beat throughout.

It was only this time last year that Kosheen hit the big time with Hide U. Their story is an interesting and hard fought one. This reviewer was unsure how their sound would translate onto a big outdoor stage such as this but they won through with the combination of energy, catchy beats and great vocals.
