Glastonbury Festival 2000 reviews

Moloko are one of those bands that evolve on a monthly basis. They've been around for a long time, and no matter what circles of music that you associate in, you'll hear their name mentioned in indie/alternative, House and even Garage circles. They cross boundaries with every track they put out, but little is ever said about them. In fact, the most coverage they've had of late is in fashion circles, about Roisin's new hair 'do'….

Moloko

So it should have been a bit of a landmark gig. It should have been like Pulp were at Glasto in 1995 where everyone said, "Oh, NOW we get it…" It should have been a gigantic coming together of different tastes, a united musical fest…. But it wasn't.

Moloko

Maybe it was the wind, blowing half the sound in one direction… but the whole thing just came across as dull and lacklustre. Roisin cuts an impressive figure on stage, in her long blue billowing gown and her 'Shampoo' 'do'. But the vocals were quiet and empty, and from the dark, intense 'The Time Is Now' to the slap-happy summer '99 hit 'Sing It Back', nothing quite cut the mustard. People wandered off the field in disappointment. Should they have played a smaller stage, a tent, The Glade?

Who knows, but Moloko's time at Glastonbury definitely isn't now.

Roisin hangs her head in shame….
