Gomez - review by : Charlie

Glastonbury Festival 1999

Other Stage, Friday 25th June

Gomez were a band I'd wanted to experience live for a long time but hadn't yet had the opportunity. Having gone to Glastonbury to celebrate my 18th birthday, what better present could I have received than the stunning performance they gave. Their timing was perfect, playing to a huge crowd under a brilliant sunset and with more enthusiasm than the vast majority of bands can muster. The atmosphere they created was great and the entire set never failed to impress, especially with unexpected bonuses like Buddy Holly's 'Not Fade Away' growing from the extended '78 Stone Wobble'.

Gomez are the most exciting live band I've seen in a long time. Their eclectic mix of blues, soul and all out rock has brought unfair comparisons to the Grateful Dead, but I can honestly say that these comparisons are totally unfounded. Gomez have a bright future ahead of them, and following that performance it shouldn't be long until they gain the recognition they deserve.
