The organisers of Oxegen, Ireland's annual three day multi-stage music festival weekend held at Punchestown Racecourse, Naas, Ireland have confirmed the festival will be taking a break next year.

Last week promoters MCD gave a strong signal that the event wasn't likely to happen when they announced news that The Stones Roses would be playing at Dublin's Phoenix Park on Thursday 5th July which would have been the day before Oxegen was due to start.

MCD confirmed that the festival will be taking a break next year in a similar manner to Glastonbury Festival, and will be making a return in 2013. The promoters announced, "Oxegen like Glastonbury is taking a year off in 2012 and will be back July 2013.
Wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas & peaceful New Year.
Keep Rockin' in 2012 and we will see you in 2013.
."

Suspicions the festival would not be going ahead next year were increased when no pre-Christmas announcement was made about early bird tickets, as had been announced for its sister festival T-in-the-Park, which takes place in Scotland on the same weekend.

The biggest music event in Ireland with a capacity of 80,000, Oxegen (formerly known as Wittness Festival)has since 2004 hosted many of the big names in contemporary music.
