  1. Anyone else find it odd that on one hand there's lots of bullish talk about McFly headling on the website, yet in the mailout from eFestivals they're not even mentioned amongst the headline names, and mentioned in one brief sentence just above Shonen Knife?

A conscious decision to downplay an unpopular headliner to more experienced festival-goers?

  2. Favourite Act: Tunng... "Everyone should be a rock star, just for a minute!" Also great were Teenage Fanclub, The Leisure Society, Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three, Milton Jones

Biggest let down: Real ale tent woefully underestimating how thirsty people can be

Best find (band wise): The Futureheads - not really a find as such, but they were way, WAY better than I expected. And it was bizarrely nice to see that kind of band indulge in some good old fashioned "seeing which side of the room can sing louder" crowd-goading fun!

  3. Just worth mentioning as well that there'll be a night of comedy at the Y during the Thursday Fringe festival if you get here in time for that, which I understand has also been programmed by the Leicester Comedy Festival. Well worth a fiver and for a good cause.

  4. As long as you don't mind a little fruity language every now and then you'll be fine. If your son positively LIKES a little fruity language and a little audience participation, go see Jim Smallman and sit near the front!

(And sorry to contradict the experts, but there's a running time is up on the E-festivals Cabaret Tent page - click on Attractions on the main website and it'll take you there.)

  5. We're also interested to know whether people attending the festival would be prepared to pay a couple of quid for a pouch or carton to put their cigarette butts in and also if they would prepared to pay a deposit for a reusable plastic glass and or be rewarded in some small way if you return your plastic glass. Hardly a scientific survey I know. Any thoughts welcomed.

  6. 1 - Some people don't like the taste of lager or bitter, so they drink cider.

2 - Some people cannot drink Bulmers cider because it is unsuitable for vegetarians.*

    (Company Email:

"One of the components of an ingredient used in the recipe for Bulmers/Magners cider is derived from an animal source, therefore Bulmers/Magners has been classified as not suitable for vegetarians. This ingredient is widely used in the manufacture of food and drink. The recipe for Bulmers/Magners Original Cider is confidential.")

3 - Some people don't want to have to carry around a load of heavy liquid all day every day for when they fancy a pint (or two or three or four or however many), or to have to walk to the Lansdowne every time someone gets a round in.

4 - As a result, some people might not bother coming as it changes the atmosphere for them completely.

They don't complain about it, they don't sit in judgement telling anyone else who's right or wrong, they just ask if it's going to be the same deal as last year, they get an answer courtesy of the organisers, they say thank you (and again, the answer is appreciated even if it's not what they'd have wanted to hear), the end.

(* - and tastes like wee wee, but that's just my personal opinion...)

  7. Oops!

I just realised how judgemental that sounds.

I really didn't mean it to.

I guess I'm just not as selective / fussy as some people.

The only stuff I have a problem with is all that weak watery Carling / Fosters / Boddingtons /John Smiths crap.

    Bugger! Just did it again!

    I'll get me coat................

  8. In no particular order:

    * Getting up close and personal with Monotonix... very personal. Very personal indeed. A big picture of my bumcrack as seen at this set is also viewable on a BBC website. How many people can say that, eh?

    * Entering the delightfully redneck and un-PC world of Special Ed & The Shortbus (who, incidentally, have changed their name to the Hot Seats... apparently some promoters didn't like their name)

    * Belle & Sebastian, best headliner yet

    * Super Furry Animals' 20 minute techno wig-out on The Man Don't Give A f**k

    * Kings of Convenience's soul-soothing indoor set

    * The Boy Least Likely To, the jauntiest band ever. I'll paraphrase the review that said "if all the toys from your childhood got together and formed a band this is what they'd sound like"

    * Managing to catch The Divine Comedy's performance for the 6music hub tent - particularly A Lady Of A Certain Age

    * The Proclaimers, when it seemed as though everyone in the whole world suddenly remembered how much they like the Proclaimers. Possibly holds the record for "largest number of people dancing on the DMH balcony"?

    * The 2006 Summer Sundae Umbrella, which ended up being autographed by a LOT of people, including a delighted Nouvelle Vague and an utterly baffled and possibly slightly frightened Stephen Fretwell

    * Being beaten by a 11 year old girl in the final of the Phrased & Confused fridge poetry competition

  9. Ahoy thar!

I just wanted to ask if there will be another deal like last year's Magners promotion which seemingly prevented any cider apart from Magners being sold on site? It did seem out of keeping with the spirit of SSW. (For ale fans, I'm advised that this is like the equivalent of only having Tetleys available and nothing else.)

I know that it's a deal-breaker for a cider drinker or two with a long memory, who aren't happy booking tickets unless they know they can get a decent pint on site, and not have to carry round a day's worth of refreshments at all times.

  10. I'll keep this short, to ensure I don't go off on a rant... I'll still be going, but I'll also be making sure the council know my feelings on how this issue has been handled, and continues to be handled.

In a strange kind of way, perhaps supporting the festival is the best way to support Richard? Perhaps empirical evidence of support in early ticket sales could show the council how much we respect what Richard (and others of course) have built up this last 10 years, and how they may have underestimated public feeling on the issue.
