  1. Is everyone flagged out from last years mammoth efforts? Not much going down in this thread this year.

    sorry if it's already been asked somewhere on this thread [there are 25 pages and i'm not reading them all!], but what is the best way of making sure your telescopic flagpole doesn't fall over? do they come with pegs or something?? i'm buying one but never seen one up closeso some help would be appreciated.

    cheersssssssss

  2. Well, finally it is all finished :(:D

    I ended up using silk paints from an art supply shop, as my 2 local B&Q's were a bit rubbish on the acrylic paint front. Didn't work too well initially as they're clearly designed to be used on white fabrics, so I just painted all the coloured bits white as a sort of base coat. The black was done with a big black permanent fabric marker pen type thing.

    It was pinned to the notice board in my kitchen to allow proper drying when this picture was taken, that's why there's a meningitis thing visible through it. As well as the de rigueur notice to my fellow students to clean the bloody mess up ;):P

    If I have the opportunity for a test hoist up the flag pole I'll post a pic of it flying freely.

  3. Yes, it's a SkyBlue nylon flag with normal iron-on paper. There's a link further back in this thread to a page about using the iron-on paper with nylon kites which recommended using the wool setting on your iron as the nylon's not as absorbent as cotton. That's what I did and it turned out okay, although I turned the heat up slightly towards the end, which made the ink flow too much and it went blotchy. Be careful about what you place under the flag - some of the ink will flow through onto your base material. Make sure you go around all the edges properly and remember to allow the paper to cool before peeling off the backing.
  4. Flag number 2 (of 2 - don't worry, I'm not going to keep churning out the buggers) has just been completed. I got some iron-on printer paper and, after an hour and a half's ironing, I present my version of Something Awful's 'awesome' emote:

    It didn't come out 100% perfect - not all the sheets lined up perfectly, some of the ink looks like it could peel and some has gone blotchy - but I'll just have to see how she flies. Oh yeah, and I wish I'd remembered to mirror it :).

  5. The one that says click here for full size image.

    If it aint working on your pc fine, but don't try and make me out to be stupid. It's there.

  6. Here's mine. The weather was mniging when I put it up, and as soon as I took it down the clouds parted and the sun shone. Think maybe the flag is jinxed!! :D:P:)

    Keep an eye out for this un, and please nobody nick it, as it cost about £30

  7. Sorry if this has already been covered but i'm looking for some white paint for my flag (red, nylon i think). What's best to use and where can I buy it (i.e chains, eg Homebase?) Fabric paint? Is it waterproof?!
  8. According to the cateye website, their cheapo led lights will last for 'up to 150 hours'. I think that means that if you use duracell batteries and put the light on flash it'll last for over 6 days non-stop. Bigger batteries not required! I find cateye lights to be highly weather-proof so I think you'd be fine just strapping one to your pole without any extra protection.

    If anyone's wondering, you can get the TL LD 130 for £6.79.

  9. Stole one of Pogal's pictures :lol: to show what the top of the pole looks like. Last year when I used my flagpole I didn't use anything to attach the flag other than the bungees and it was fine, though the cable tie suggestion is a very good idea. You could also just use a piece of string and tie the flag to the pole through the wee eyelet at the very top to make sure you don't lose your flag if it gets windy.

    There's a section on the site when you order that asks where you heard of the site so I'm sure they are aware of the publicity on efests! :D

  10. Right, onto the ground spikes - these are beasty things, they're not like tent pegs or anything. They are about 60cm long and you whack them into the ground about 30cm. The pole then has a plastic cover at the bottom that you remove and it slides over the spikes - so you don't see them at all.

    The five-metre pole is pretty wide at the bottom so I can get three inside it to keep it really steady. Then I'll tent-peg the guy ropes.

    If I fit in a test runat the weekend I'll take some photos of some of these ideas and see how they work!

  11. Right, just read this whole flippin' thread!

    There's still things I'm confuzzled over though.

    Namely, these ground spike jobbies. What do they do? Where do they go? People have said "whack 'em in the ground, put the pole over it, and jobs done" but how can you have more than one if that's what you do? :D Do you use them for the guy ropes aswell, or do normal tent pegs work ok for that?

    Also, these bungies. From follow the Bungies101 course on here, I've come up with a slight improvement:

    (I can't do pictures as I don't have either a pole or bungies, so you'll have to use your imagination I'm afraid)

    - Do Step1 of Pogal's walkthrough, and maybe even Pogal's "wrap it round the flag again" technique to take up some slack;

    - Then twist it up the remainder of the "loop" a fair bit to, again, take up some slack;

    - To attach it to the pole, do a "lark's head" knot (essentially how you attach the lanyard to your mobile phone, if you know what I mean) on and slide it over. Pull it tight and it shouldn't slip anywhere (especially with a ziptie to rest on). I use these knots on the lines for my kite surfing kites and they don't let any slippage. And that's with a 13sq m kite, so I think a 3x5 flag'll be ok!

    Has anyone got a picture of a 8m pole with a tent or 2 for scale? Having trouble picturing the enormity of it :lol:

    Edited to add link for visualising a lark's head. clicky clicky catchey monkey
