I’m very skeptical. Would Sting and Patti Smith not be big enough for the first two rows? Plus the National twice. It wouldn’t surprise me if this is 90% correct though.

I’ve been 3 times. All of the above is correct and yes last year was a f**king disaster.

The only sliver of hope is that they take on board the sheer number of complaints about last year and set about rectifying all the issues for this years edition.

In its previous location in IFEMA an argument could be made that pound for pound it was the best European festival and even a little bit under the radar and under rated. Great city, great weather and superb value lineup wise for the price.

They moved it last year to barren wasteland in Vilaverde which is a sketchy part of Madrid. There is nothing around it bar industrial estates and motorway. Inside the venue it was a really really bad festival experience.

    Such a shame.

They replied to my comment on Instagram that they’d sorted the toilet situation out!

Thinking of giving this or primavera a bash this year.

Attended benicassim 2017 to 2019 before it went to sh*t

Cala mijas 2022 and rock wercther last year....

No line ups really impressing me this year all though that may be to RW being so strong last year.

Just looking for reviews?? Have heard mixed things.

It’s enjoyable. It’s fairly easy to access from the city centre. The weather is great. The logistics inside the festival were atrocious last year but for the overall price/Madrid experience I’d say definitely do it once.

Sufjan is learning how to walk again after a motor neurone disease diagnosis. I dont think he'll be touring by next year

Sufjan Stevens definitely doesn't have motor neurone disease, he had guillian-barre syndrome which is a very different thing. If it was motor neurone disease, he wouldn't be learning to walk again.

    Yeah I’ve done IFEMA 3 times .

The main stage and second stage were at 90 degrees to each other so if you found a decent spot you could pivot to watch the next band without moving . Particularly uselful for the second tier acts in the early evening. I actually thought the old madcool was better than primavera at times. It was that good.

it was way more chilled . If you sat down you didn’t have people stepping over you to get by. It had more space.  You could see everything from everywhere. It felt really open.

You used to sail in and out of the toilets and no exaggeration ….you’d go to get a pint and the staff would be fighting over who got to serve you at times. It was bliss. I actually thought it was the most under rated festival in Europe. And last year was 4 days of acts.

To be fair its still really great value , a great city and lovely weather guaranteed but if they continue in that vein it’s a young man’s game. Too much of a slog. I can imagine a 22 year old reading my posts and wondering what my fuss is about.

I still have no idea where the shuttle bus or taxis were after being there for 3 days. Every day I left the festival I was funnelled to the underground metro station.

There was something intangible about the whole festival too. It just felt a bit off.

I think I’ll be looking elsewhere next year or just coming here specifically for a day if there is a band I can’t miss.

I think they were winging it!

  6. We didn’t get to many of the smaller stages because there was so much going on but our favourites in no order were:

    1) Robbie Williams, as @prefab said it was a great show, self indulgent, entertaining, cocky, just what you want to see from Robbie.

    2) Tash Sultana, she is just a breathtakingly impressive musician. The Spanish absolutely love her.

     3) Paolo Nutini seems like a long time ago but was a great start to the festival and he’s still definitely got it.

    4) Mumford & Sons, great headline set and that comes from a guy who isn’t their biggest fan.

    5) Left RHCP for a mooch and came across the Hu, who Id seen some hype about. They’re fantastic.

    6) Sigur Ros, svefn g englar possibly my favourite song so to see it live was amazing. What a sound.

We also enjoyed Black Keys, Liam Gallagher, Prodigy, Years and Years etc etc. it’s a great value festival in terms of acts.

What’s your summary of it Lionator?

what did you make of it overall?

The first day was chaotic wasn’t it? The queues, the bottlenecks. I think if tonight’s crowd had attended on Thursday there could’ve genuinely been a catastrophe, but thankfully they sorted out the teething issues, although the toilet entrance situation was shambolic. Saw some really good acts, RHCP were easily the worst.

I feel like a lot of the worst critics probably haven’t experienced some of the UK festivals where etiquette isn’t quite as good as on the continent.

Just realised the girls camping next to the entrance are waiting for Harry Styles on the 14th. Brutal.

That is insane, they’ve been there since Thursday!

Toilets are operating a one way system today, let’s hope security can enforce it and people are sensible.

Nice, mostly sound like improvements! Hope the toilet barriers are doing the job.

It’s fine at the minute although I’m skeptical. They’ve put a sh*t ton of security/stewards by the toilets too so hopefully it’ll reduce the chaos.

Yeah I loved Madcool last year too. And you do have a point. I come accross as old man shouts at cloud.

By all accounts Villaverde is a sketchy enough place at the best of time.  Something I wasn’t aware of.

I think you are taking my comments a little to literally.

IFEMA is a convention centre. Its designed to host big events. You could see the Madrid skyscrapers to the left, the Real Madrid training ground as you queued to get in. Flights from Barajas taking off overhead. It felt Madrid.

This is an area of scrubland flanked by a motorway and DHL warehouses. With overhead power lines running through it in a few directions .

it just feels very utilitarian. Very meh.

Im in my late 30’s  With no kids. When I want a taxi I’ll pay the 40/50quid just to get home. I’ll shell out for a decent hotel. I’ve been to good festivals such as Primavera 4 weeks ago where I got out of a cab and was inside with a pint in my hand within ten minutes- no exaggeration.

Next year when festival season rolls round I won’t be thinking “yeah I fancy trapsing out to that industrial estate in the back arse of Madrid.

On my mothers life , I left the venue last night and could not find a taxi. Maybe I went the wrong way but it all felt so thrown together.

And as someone alluded to earlier . Matty from the 1975 didn’t want to be there. He came out on stage. which was a tin pot, two bob stage in the corner and they were given an hour to play and he thought yeah f**k this. He even said at the end and I’m paraphrasing “We have to fulfill this festival obligation and then we will announce real shows in Spain soon, stop annoying me on Twitter asking”

Im on my way out again this evening. Going to Tash Sultana, QOTSA and Black Keys. Missus has sacked it off. Won’t do it again.
    So im going solo tonight.

I missed Franz Ferdinand last night who I really wanted to see just to get the f**k out of the place.

I’ll allude to NOS again but that venue is fairly similar, if not worse as it’s on the beach but they deliberately board everything up so you can’t even see the beach/water.

I get that you didn’t enjoy it and I think your reasoning is legitimate, I’m guessing if you enjoyed the old site you must feel like you’ve lost a good thing but, yesterday was still a good experience for a lot of us. I’d say organisationally it reminded me a lot of All Points East. I do hope that they iron out the issues from last night today but I don’t think it was by any means awful. I actually thought the Region of Madrid stage was a nice place to watch music.

  11. I think the toilet issue could easily be solved by just making one entrance and one exit, the problem was being caused by people travelling in both directions. Also the toilets were fine during big sets so if you need to go I’d pop off for 5 minutes then. You’d like to think they’ll be able to adapt today but this is mad cool.

This article is overly dramatic, the metro and bus situations are fine and it was a lot easier to return to the city than it has been when I’ve been to NOS alive. Of course it’s going to be busy because there’s 70,000 people.

Hmmm so this all sounds quite bad. With this in mind, whats a good time to aim to go in? I kinda wanted to see Spoon, but that would probably mean needing to be in a queue by 3pm, which in this heat seems like a bad idea.

Perhaps a better option is getting to queue around 6, but maybe it'll be busier then?

Advice very welcome! I'm not that fussed about seeing anyone else until QotSA.

We arrived at 5.45 yesterday and were at stage 3 by 6.45, that was with wristband pick up and a very long line. If you have a wristband to pick up I’d recommend getting there 60/90 minutes before to make sure but otherwise it shouldn’t take you too long, especially with today being day 2 and the 3-dayers having their wristbands.

The atmosphere is terrible. People is boring, they talk so much, the sound is not the best, and we had 38º one day last year. I cannot recomend this festival, I'm sorry.

I read a similar thing before I went to NOS alive and we had the time of our lives there.

This seems weirdly ambitious considering they did Crystal Palace literally last year which is what, 15k?

I reckon if there’s a similar sized band on the bill then it could work. I bloody love a Jungle show, the funnest band to see live.

  15. I just don’t think that line up/headliners in any way justify the ticket price. But I am aware that Green Man is more about the vibes than the music. Just if you going for the music alone, I think you’d be very disappointed that there aren’t some bigger ‘names’.
