To do that across all the campsites would cost hundreds of thousands at least and would only be helpful to vehicles really.

No it wouldn't. Sonisphere had them on their Arena entrances. It's literally 2 or 3 Metal Sheets at each entrance.

Unless it stops raining and no more rain is forecast, there's few festivals that will make more than the smallest efforts for the very worst parts, Glasto included.

I've lost my rag in the past at the lack of efforts festies have made with the rain, but today I've got a better understanding of how ineffective efforts are unless the rain has stopped.

It's probably not helped at somewhere like Download where there's probably restrictions on the festival by the site owner on what measures they might be permitted to take. No one is likely to mind straw (tho it's a waste of time unless the rain has stopped), while more effective wood chips are less liked because it doesn't just disappear as straw does.

Wood chips are expensive and heavy tho, and are likely to be need to be sourced in advance - when you don't actually know if you'll need them. And you'd need a fleet of lorries of wood chips to make even a small difference to a badly effected large festival site.

Download are just tight, money grabbing so and so's. Chances are it's going to rain over that weekend, I think there's only been a few out of 15 or so years where it hasn't rained. I don't think they actually care as long as people are in the arena spending money.

There's lots of ways they could invest -

    Straw/ Wood chippings.

    Cardboard or Chipwood flooring.

Metal Sheets on heavy footfall areas ie entrance ways to the arena/ Car Park(s)/ Camp Site(s) (even Sonisphere managed that one)

    Plastic walkways around the arena.

Plastic ground sheet for the pit areas.

More Canopy/ Sheltered areas around bars.

    Canopies for the outdoor stages.

I remember around 4 or 5 years ago, they were talking about addressing these issues permanently by putting down concrete paths and tracks. What happened to that idea?

Black Sabbath / Deftones / Megadeth / Down / While She Sleeps / Atreyu / Rival Sons / Beartooth

Parkway Drive / Skindred / Architects

    Sum 41

    Iron Maiden / Nightwish / Disturbed / Halestorm / Ghost / Tremonti / Sixx:A.M. / Evil Scarecrow

Volbeat / Billy Talent / Don Broco

    Saxon

    erm what about Shinedown?

KSE were 4th from top last time and getting bigger, according to Beez the next album is going to be huge.

Rival Sons last album broke the top 20, they have a new album out next year, no way will they be practically opening Main.

Last time Billy Talent had a new album out, they were 4th from top on Main, new album out next year, no way are they subbing 2nd.

Parkway Drive only played this year, R/L or Sonisphere next year I imagine.

I can't see Skindred dropping to 2nd stage.

I think there's a reason why Papa Roach weren't announced as expected, something tells me they've gone elsewhere.

Twin Atlantic could easily headline 2nd.

  4. In terms of placement, I see Download looking like this at the moment -

Rammstein - Korn -  Motorhead - Killswitch Engage

    Twin Atlantic

    Gutterdamerung

    Black Sabbath - Deftones - Megadeth - Down - Skindred - Rival Sons - ??? - Neck Deep - Beartooth

Bullet For My Valentine??? - Architects - Atreyu

    Iron Maiden - Nightwish - Disturbed - Halestorm - Billy Talent - Tremonti - Breaking Benjamin - Don Broco - ???

    Shinedown - Ghost - Gojira - Delain

    Saxon

  5. Just a few things -

Pearl Jam's tour is rumoured to end on the weekend of the 8th-10th July.

RHCP's tour looks like it's early festivals.

GnR are rumoured to be announcing in January alongside Coachella.

If I was a betting man, I would say that R/L will be -

    The Prodigy/Biffy Clyro - Foals - Guns N' Roses

Rumour has it that Pearl Jam will be cancelling their European Summer dates after the Paris attacks...

Rumour has it that they are getting announced alongside Iron Maiden for Sonisphere Italy tomorrow.

  7. Simply bollocks to be honest. I don't know who Gazza or Black Crow or that other guy is who people keep saying we're the same person...

I don't have any other aliases and only go by my 1 user on every forum I use. I have only had 1 other username and that was on the DLF and that was raebcilatem - Metalicbear backwards.

So which three were supposed to be headlining out of Foos, Rammstein, Metallica and RATM?

No idea why you're even trying to claim Lucky as being wrong, when everybody on here knows that you (and your alter ego Black Crow) have no idea what's going on, whilst Lucky has proven several times he gets good info.

Re-read my post again. I said Rammstein were asked to play, they weren't sure what their plans were and then decided not to tour, the headliners were supposed to be Metallica, Foo Fighters, RATM. Green Day were never mentioned once at the time.

I don't have an alter ego, I only have 1 username. So I'm not sure what you're alluding too, didn't you also think that I was Gazza too.

LS has been proven wrong several times. He wasn't even on the DLF at the time, everyone who was, knows which headliners were in line to play. As it was common knowledge at the time.

As much as at the time The Offspring inder Green Day would of been ace, you are he person telling us Soni is happening next year with no sign of an announcement while Download are gearing up for a 2nd one.

I would take a slight bet that if Reading have RHCP, they have gone for them so that Soni don't have them as Chilis and maybe SOAD would do well.

The Offspring wouldn't have been under Green Day as Green Day were not even in the running. Offspring would have been under Foo Fighters.

Download have already made 5 announcements, so not sure why you're saying they are gearing up for their 2nd.

I have no idea what Readings plans are, but it seems like there was a battle for GnR, not RHCP.

Who why did GD and Foos not happen? LP were massive then and it was probably the time when bar the top boya like Metallica, people playing 3rd at Reading could headline Download.

GD didn't happen because LS got his facts mixed up, they were never in the running in 2008.

Rammstein were approached originally, they chose not to tour.

Kiss approached Download asking to play.

Metallica and RATM ended up at Reading instead.

Foo Fighters decided to do their own shows.

Download went back to Kiss and Lostprophets and The Offspring got bumped up. There was also talks of Judas Priest being pushed up.

  11. Machine Head's time would have been the first Download in 2003. Just a shame Supercharger was a terrible album and Through the Ashes of Empires was basically trying to catch up again, then they took so long to release The Blackening; which ended up just being a Metallica tribute album and by that time their time had already passed them, Unto the Locust did nothing to help them.

Their pig-headedness hasn't helped their cause either - refusing to headline 2nd stage, refusing to play a UK festival unless they headline etc.

See above dude, I got mixed up.

2008 was originally Green Day, Lost Prophets and Foos.

And trust me on LP, they were ALWAYS booked as headliner.

You got mixed up again, as GD weren't down to headline in 2008. Both Lostprophets and The Offspring were bumped up when headliners pulled out. Kiss were a last minute replacement as well, but actually approached AC in the beginning asking to play. Original headliners were meant to be Metallica, RATM and Foo Fighters.

Well, what about Hollywood Vampires? they playing Rock in Rio Lisbon

They're headlining Rock in Rio on one of the nights.

There's no slots left big enough for them at Download. AC has already alluded a while ago that they won't be playing Download.

Hmm. It does say "Bloodstock will be the place to see them next summer" but that's not definitive.

Just looking at that BOA announcement; I swear the members of Mastodon, Ghost, Gojira and Metallica must be sick of the sight of each other by now. Every festival that has one of those seems guaranteed to have at least another one on the same day. Good management I suppose.

I'm surprised BOA didn't get Ghost, as well as Mastodon and Gojira, would have thought that package would make sense, I'm not sure Gojira are big enough to sub either, unless a band dropped out.. Seems to be quite a few people thinking that the last headliner is Volbeat. Wonder what happened to that guy who said they were definitely playing high up at Download.

When bands are announced they say if they're exclusive or not, for instance in the presser this week, Satyricon got announced as only UK show, whereas Gojira and Anthrax didn't. Makes you wonder if they're doing double duty.

Just spotted Limp Bizkit have announce a European festival date. All the way in August though, when they were around last year. Suppose they could still pop up early in summer and stick around if they have a new album. Would BOA punters kick off if they were announced?

I'm not endorsing Limp Bizkit or anything, it's just time we moved on from this argument.

Have they? what festival is that? haven't seen anything.

The thing is about people saying oh in such and such a year the same bands were on the bill, these bands do cycles, so in 3 years time it probably will be the same bands again. Its just how it works. The surprising thing is how people still get surprised by this and moan about it.

Then of course you have acts who see Download as a Metal festival, which Andy is desperate to change to Rock festival but acts and punters still think its metal and they dont want to play or go to the fest.

Quite far from the truth. People aren't surprised by these bands, that's the problem. There's nothing in there that makes people go Wow! instead they're saying that the booking are boring and lazy. People are moaning because they're sick of being fed the same bands every 2-3 years with very little alternative. It's why more and more people are going to festivals like Hellfest and little boutique festivals like Slam Dunk instead.

AC isn't exactly trying hard to change peoples perceptions of it being a Metal festival now is he. 9 bands announced, all 9 are Metal bands. Why is it that bands such as Biffy Clyro are willing to headline Sonisphere, but not Download.

  17. 12 hours ago, devilman said:

Fair dos. This year we have 3 of the 5 biggest bands in the world just now. What is the festival supposed to do? They are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

That's a very debateable point. I would argue that there's a lot of bands bigger than Rammstein.

They're not damned if they do, these bookings are just boring to people who go to festivals every year. I think the word which has been used a lot is Lazy when describing these bookings.

This is the part where all those festivals announce the likes of Queen + Adam Lambert, Die Toten Hosen, Scorpions and other stuff that's irrelevant to Soni's headliner situation. :P

I know it's similarly early but the undercard prospects look considerably bleaker than the headliners, to be honest. Download's line up is getting shit on and they picked some of the biggest bands that are around at the time, and Kili themselves just signed off Ritchie Blackmore and Alice Cooper to different events and shows when they could have been major names at Sonisphere.

Rockavaria's remaining headliners have been rumoured to be Linkin Park and GnR for a few weeks now.

Other potential headliners who are in Europe - Biffy Clyro, RHCP, Kiss.

Perhaps Glasto could be convinced to share Muse with Sonisphere, like with Metallica.

Then there's Pearl Jam who are rumoured to be playing festivals.

....and BMTH who could be given a push to headline.

As far as other big bands are concerned who could fill the lineup, who have already been announced for festivals - Bullet For My Valentine, Slayer, Volbeat, Within Temptation.

Alice Cooper could have headlined the 2nd stage at Sonisphere, due to him being in Europe there's nothing stopping him doing a Hollywood Vampires set. Perhaps Blackmore didn't want to play any festivals.
