  1. The M6 is now fully open in both directions. However, the high winds often lead to trucks falling over on the Shap section ( south of Penrith, north of Kendal town). So be aware that there may be delays and  keep a good distance from trucks.

This link is the local police traffic reports https://www.cumbria.police.uk/Traffic/Traffic.aspx

Radio Cumbria is also goof for traffic news, not so much on Sunday but just before the half hour and hour weekday mornings late afternoon, just before the hour the rest of the day.

  2. Northbound is now fully open.

However, southbound is still closed. This is due to a bridge that is unstable so there is no guarantee this will be fixed by the time you're leaving, so check travel information on site before you leave if you're heading south.

  3. I get what you're saying, but if they can sort something in advance better safe than sorry. Only takes one of security on the gate to be strict and they'll be stuck. That said, if I was in that position and hadn't managed to get anything sorted, I'd still go and hope. Even if the worst happens and they can't get in they'll be able to camp somewhere else and there is other stuff going on in the county.

  4. It isn't a question of common sense. The tickets are so they know how many people are coming. The site licence only allows a certain number of people and kids (however little) count as people. It is sold out so they will be at capacity.

I suggest you try some of the Cumbria pages on facebook (there is a freecycle one) someone in the area might have some tickets you can pick-up when you get near. Also try emailing the organisers to see if anything can be done, but they will have their hands full at the moment especially with the traffic issues.

  5. M6 closed all lanes, both directions J36 to J32. Due to bridge damage there is likely to be a closure for a few days, although they may open up some other junctions. If you're coming from the east (or further south) go up the M1 / A1(M) and cut across on the A66 to Penrith. The A6 seems the obvious route but it will be chocca!

A65 from the A1/ M1 is another option. There are actually problems with slow traffic on both the A66 and A65 and a few others due to "construction" and a broken down HGV on the A66.

Stock up on snacks, water and a bottle to pee in, its going to be a long day for some.

  6. Two years ago a band called Kitchie Wud opened the Saturday at midday on the main stage. It started with about 30 friends and family watching and soon swelled to over 120 people as people came from around the site, attracted by the music to hear this little known local band. This is what Solfest is about, its about hearing stuff you've never heard before, its about the street theatre, the numerous stalls selling wierd and wonderful things, the food stalls that won't cost a fortune, the sensible drink prices, the acoustic tent and Wierdigans, the artworks, the kids running about everywhere safely playing, the workshops, most of all its about the friendly laid back atmosphere.

This is what all festivals should be about.

Incidentally, stewarding is a great way to go to Solfest, you'll make lots of new friends with other stewards and have a tent where you can get a brew and chill out at anytime.

  7. Ooooo, simply wonderful!

The arena was nowt but gorse and trees 12 months back. They've dug out the gorse and grassed areas to make lovely little clearings where the stages each sit in their own little areas. As this is not farmland there are things that can be done that you just can't do on farmland, so there's gravel paths instead of mud, lovely little rockery gardens, permanent wooden fences and handrails etc.

There was loads to do for the kids and it was a really family friendly atmosphere, and it seemed there was very little aggro of any sort.

Oh yes, and there was also music, of a good variety with stuff for all tastes. There was a range of food stalls from across the world and a few of the usual traders and various workshops.
